A small northern Ontario municipality is considering a major change to how residents cast their ballots in local elections.

The Municipality of Markstay-Warren, located southeast of Sudbury, has issued a request for quotes seeking vendors to provide internet and telephone voting systems for use in the 2026 municipal and school board elections.

According to a public procurement notice posted on the Merx government tendering system, the municipality is looking for a contractor capable of delivering and administering a secure voting platform that would allow residents to vote remotely either online or by phone.

If implemented, the system would replace traditional paper ballots and in-person voting with a fully electronic voting process. These systems typically provide electors with a personal identification number that can be used to log in to a secure portal or automated telephone system to cast their vote during the election period.

Remote voting has been adopted by a number of municipalities across Ontario in recent years, particularly in smaller communities seeking to reduce staffing costs and increase accessibility for voters who may have mobility challenges or live in rural areas.

However, critics of online and phone in voting have raised concerns about the security and transparency of internet voting systems, noting that electronic ballots can be difficult to independently audit compared to paper ballots.

The Markstay-Warren procurement notice invites vendors to submit proposals outlining the technology, security protocols, voter authentication methods and administrative support required to run the election.

The selected system would be used for the 2026 municipal and school board elections, which will determine local council and trustee representation for the township.

B.C. government billed taxpayers $3,900 for Amsterdam happy hour

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the British Columbia government to rein in international travel spending after records revealed taxpayers were billed $3,900 for a “happy hour” drink reception in Amsterdam.

According to freedom-of-information records obtained by the CTF, B.C.’s Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, through Trade and Invest British Columbia, hosted a reception during a conference at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre in the Netherlands.

Invoices show the government spent about 2,457 euros — roughly $3,900 Canadian — to host approximately 50 attendees at the reception, working out to about $78 per person.

The documents also indicate the government extended the event from 1.5 hours to two hours, adding nearly $600 in additional costs to taxpayers. Continue…

Canada’s Senate calls itself the chamber of “sober second thought,” but new expense records show taxpayers are footing the bill for booze, fine dining and even disco parties.

Expenses reviewed by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show senators charged taxpayers $116,100 in hospitality spending last year, a 67% increase compared to the previous year.

“It’s probably hard for senators to provide that sober second thought when they’re spending thousands on booze,” said Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Taxpayers are going to be outraged when they see how unelected senators are milking their expenses.”

Since 2019, Senate spending includes $27,000 on alcohol purchased from the LCBO, SAQ, wineries and The Beer Store. Senators also spent thousands on gifts, including $1,600 at a Newfoundland distillery.

Fine dining also featured prominently in the expenses. Senators spent $20,500 across nine visits to Le St-Estèphe, an upscale French restaurant in Gatineau, Quebec. Continue…

A First Nation on Vancouver Island has given longtime residents of a trailer park on its reserve lands two years to get out so the First Nation can create housing for its own members.

The K’ómoks First Nation announced on Wednesday that the Queneesh Trailer Park will be closing on January 31, 2028, "to begin to make way for much-needed housing and services for Nation members."

Longtime residents of the trailer park, on which 27 trailers are located housing over 100 people, told CHEK News that the First Nation is treating them unfairly, and they have limited options to relocate their homes due to costs and limited space on the island.

Kathy Jenkins, a park resident of 34 years, said, "There’s no place to move our trailers to on the Island. We are stuck. We have put our life savings into this trailer, and now we have to leave with nothing."

Don Cropley, a park resident of 18 years, said, "I’m just really appalled at the First Nations for deciding to develop this land when they have a whole bunch of other tracts of land that are in really nice locations, and they’ve chosen to displace all us people." Continue…

BC nurses' union drops nurse Amy Hamm

Amy Hamm, a BC nurse who first came to the public's attention in 2020 for speaking out on sex and gender, has been dropped by the BC Nurses' Union (BCNU).

Hamm announced on X Friday the union had "just dropped [her]."

"They accuse me of discrimination, including in published National Post columns," Hamm wrote.

She continued to say she is now in "nothing-to-lose territory" when it comes to exposing the union.

"Unions: there for you through thick and thin, unless you say that men aren’t women," she wrote in another X post.

BCNU states on their website that they provide "portection, representation, and services to all members."

They also have a "2SLGBTQ+ Caucus" which "works to challenge homophobia and increase awareness throughout our union about its damaging impact."

Canada’s most wanted fugitive is in police custody after being arrested in Montreal this week in connection with a shooting death at Toronto’s Yorkdale mall last summer.

Bryan Fuentes Gramajo was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant in the city’s Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie borough at approximately 2:40 a.m. on March 5 by the major crimes unit of the Montreal police force, the police service said in a press release.

The 24-year-old Montreal native was wanted by Toronto police on a first-degree murder charge linked to the death of 28-year-old Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean, who was shot in the parking lot of the shopping centre last July.

Officers responding to the Yorkdale mall shooting found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds outside the Indigo book store in the shopping centre’s parking lot during the early morning hours of July 17, 2025. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts to save his life, Toronto police said in a March 5 press release.

Fuentes Gramajo was placed atop Canada’s Most Wanted List last year, and a reward of up to $100,000 was offered by Toronto police for any information leading to his arrest. Police have not released the details that led to the suspected gang member’s arrest or if the reward will be paid out.

Police have said Fuentes Gramajo is thought to be affiliated with Zone 43, a Montreal-based street gang with strong connections to Ontario and British Columbia. Continue…

The Falun Dafa Association of Canada says a series of China-linked threats against Shen Yun Performing Arts and the organizers of the show in Canada has now expanded to include Canadian politicians, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The association, which is the Canadian presenter of the shows in Canada, says a “sustained and escalating international campaign of state-sponsored terrorist threats” linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has now explicitly targeted Carney, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, members of Parliament, and other senior Canadian officials.

The threats warn that officials could face harm, including from explosive devices, if upcoming Shen Yun performances in several Canadian cities go ahead as planned.

The numerous threats, received primarily by Shen Yun organizers, include bomb threats, death threats, threats to rape Shen Yun performers and kill their families, arson, and staged car accidents, the association says, noting the threats all share the goal of cancelling Shen Yun and silencing the voices of Falun Gong practitioners.

Shen Yun is a world-renowned classical Chinese dance company based in New York that depicts traditional Chinese culture and performs under the slogan “China Before Communism.” The performing arts company was founded by practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual group severely persecuted in China by the CCP. Since its inception in 2006, Shen Yun has faced a sabotage campaign from the Chinese regime that deploys tactics such as diplomatic and economic coercion to stop its performances.

The Falun Dafa Association of Canada (FDAC) says Shen Yun’s Canadian ticketing office received an email threat on Feb. 10 that said, “If you don’t care about the life and safety of Mark Carney and all Canadian high-ranking officials, then go ahead with the performances.” Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney has signed a “comprehensive strategic partnership” agreement with Japan that aims to strengthen cooperation in defence, energy, critical minerals, and other areas.

On his trip to Japan on March 6, Carney and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi committed to “intensify cooperation” on defence, critical minerals, trade, energy, climate, and “people-to-people ties,” according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

While the agreement represents a pledge for closer coordination, it does not include specific details or dollar amounts.

On defence, the PMO said the leaders focused on opportunities to collaborate on defence procurement and work together on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, aerospace, and space communications.

Carney and Takaichi also discussed three bilateral memorandums of cooperation on helping and evacuating nationals during international emergencies, joint patrol coordination and enforcement against illegal fishing in the North Pacific, and joint exercises between the Canadian Coast Guard and the Japan Coast Guard.

The two countries also pledged to identify investment opportunities and deploy trade delegations to their respective countries sometime this year to increase business. Continue…
