Pilots win compensation in landmark arbitration victory over COVID-19 vaccine mandate

https://www.rebelnews.com/pilots_win_compensation_in_landmark_arbitration_victory_over_covid_19_vaccine_mandate

Seven pilots have been awarded compensation after a years-long arbitration battle against Air Canada’s discrimination towards religious beliefs regarding its COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Arbitrator James Hayes issued a powerful rebuke to the heavy-handed policies that trampled on individual rights, informed consent, and bodily autonomy during the pandemic era, ruling that those who stood firm against the coerced medical procedure were unfairly placed on unpaid leave.

Haynes concluded that Air Canada committed prima facie workplace religious discrimination against the seven grievors (pilots), in violation of both the Collective Agreement and the Canadian Human Rights Act. He further determined that these pilots should have been placed on initial paid leaves of absence, consistent with how the airline handled exemptions granted to other pilot colleagues at the outset.

As a result, Air Canada has been directed to compensate the grievors appropriately within 60 days, and he remains involved in the matter in case any disputes arise regarding the calculation of those damages.

This outcome marks a significant victory for freedom of conscience and religious liberty, confirming that Air Canada committed religious discrimination by denying exemptions to its COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

Haynes ultimately awarded compensation based on the hardships the pilots endured after being sidelined for standing firm on deeply held beliefs. Continue…

Toronto police board meeting begins with three-minute land acknowledgment as morale concerns emerge

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/watch-toronto-police-board-meeting-begins-with-three-minute-land-acknowledgment-as-morale-concerns-emerge/71657

A Toronto Police Services Board meeting on Wednesday began with a land acknowledgment and references to religious observances delivered by board member Chris Brillinger, prompting discussion among some attendees about the use of time and recognition of religious holidays.

Brillinger, an appointee of Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow to the Toronto Police Services Board, opened the meeting with a roughly three-minute land acknowledgment recognizing that the city operates on treaty land. He also acknowledged the Christian observance of Lent and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Some attendees noted that the Jewish holiday of Purim was not mentioned.

The meeting had approximately 100 people in attendance. Critics of the opening remarks argued that the extended acknowledgment reduced the time available for board business.

The board oversees the Toronto Police Service, which operates with an annual budget of about $1.7 billion. Recent reports and commentary have suggested morale within the service has been declining.

Brillinger previously worked for the City of Toronto for 31 years, including nine years as executive director of social development finance and administration. During his tenure, he was involved in initiatives such as the city’s youth equity strategy, poverty reduction strategy and Strong Neighbourhoods Strategy.

He currently serves as executive director of Family Service Toronto, where he oversees programs aimed at supporting individuals, families and communities experiencing mental health or socioeconomic instability.

Ontario celebrates opening of Canada’s first large-scale EV battery factory

https://www.westernstandard.news/news/ontario-celebrates-opening-of-canadas-first-large-scale-ev-battery-factory/71666

Government officials, industry leaders and labour representatives gathered in Windsor to mark the opening of a major electric-vehicle battery manufacturing facility that supporters say represents a significant investment in Canada’s advanced manufacturing sector.

The plant, operated by NexStar Energy, is a battery manufacturing facility originally created through a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis. Construction began in 2022 following the announcement of the project earlier that year.

The facility now spans more than four million square feet and represents an investment of more than $5 billion. According to officials at the event, the plant has hired about 1,300 workers and produced its one-millionth battery cell earlier this year.

Mayor Drew Dilkens said the project is one of the largest industrial investments in Windsor in decades and reflects the city’s long history in the automotive sector. Continue…

Ottawa Arranges Flights as More Than 2,000 Canadians Seek to Exit Middle East

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/ottawa-arranges-charter-commercial-flights-as-more-than-2000-canadians-seek-to-exit-middle-east-5994714?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Ottawa is arranging charter flights and reserving hundreds of seats on commercial airlines to help more than 2,000 Canadians who are seeking to leave the Middle East amid the Iran war.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said during an evening press conference on March 4 that more than 106,000 Canadians and permanent residents in the Middle East have registered with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service amid a conflict triggered by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

The registered Canadians are spread across more than a dozen countries, but 85 percent of those seeking assistance are concentrated in five: 1,171 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 237 in Qatar, 164 in Lebanon, 93 in Israel, and 74 in Iran. In total, 2,035 people have asked the government for help leaving the region.

Anand said the options available for Canadians wishing to leave the Middle East depend on a range of factors, and urged Canadians in the region who have not yet registered to do so immediately.

“The situation is volatile and is changing by the hour,” she said. “In some countries, the airspace is open, in others it is partially open, and in others it’s fully closed.”

Global Affairs is securing blocks of seats on commercial airlines or is trying to arrange seats on charter flights operated by Canada or its allies in areas where the airspace remains open, Anand said. She urged Canadians in countries with closed airspace to shelter in place. Continue…

Intelligence Agency Warns Canadian Entities That Cyberattacks From Iran are ‘Very Likely’

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/intelligence-agency-urges-canadian-entities-to-stay-vigilant-over-potential-cyberattacks-from-iran-5994620?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

Canada’s national authority for cybersecurity is urging Canadian critical infrastructure operators to remain “vigilant” against the threat of cyberattacks as the conflict in Iran intensifies.

An advisory from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) posted this week that says Iran will “very likely” use its cyber capabilities in response to the joint military operations conducted against the country by the United States and Israel.

The cyber centre estimated the probability of such an attack to be between 75 and 89 percent, and said the chance of Canada being targeted ranges from 60 to 74 percent.

Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement on Feb. 28, shortly after the onset of the war, to say Canada supports the U.S. action to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Continue…

Russian Military Aircraft Incursion Prompts US and Canadian Fighter Jet Response Near Alaska

https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/russian-military-aircraft-incursion-prompts-us-and-canadian-fighter-jet-response-near-alaska-5993471?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=section-1

U.S. and Canadian defense officials said late Wednesday that two Russian military aircraft were found operating in the Alaskan and Canadian identification zones, prompting the Air Force to scramble jets in response.

A statement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said U.S. and Canadian officials detected and tracked two Russian Tu-142 military planes earlier on Wednesday, an incident that NORAD described as routine.

“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace,” NORAD said. “This Russian activity in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat.”

Two U.S. Air Force F-35 fighter planes, two F-22 fighters, four KC-135 tanker planes, and one E-3 airborne warning and control aircraft were mobilized, while Canada sent two CF-18 fighter aircraft and one CC-150 tanker plane to monitor, identify, and intercept the two Russian planes in the identification zones.

The Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, is intended to serve as a buffer to warn of potential incursions by foreign aircraft. It extends hundreds of miles into the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

NORAD, which comprises both the U.S. and Canadian militaries, added in its statement that it “employs a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate actions,” noting, “NORAD remains ready to employ a number of response options in defense of North America.” Continue…

The company selling electricity from a Queens County wind farm that’s getting $231 million in federal funding is primarily owned by family members of former Liberal MPs.

Roswall Development Inc., which owns the company that will be selling electricity from Mersey River Wind directly to consumers (Renewall Energy), is owned by the brothers of two former Liberal MPs, the son-in-law of another, former provincial interim Liberal leader Michel Samson, and international infrastructure fund Slate Asset Management.

The Registry of Joint Stock Companies lists Roswall Development directors as:

Chair Michel Samson, the Cape Breton-Richmond MLA until 2017 and former interim leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party

Edgar Samson, the owner of Premium Seafoods and brother of Darrel Samson, who was Liberal MP for Sackville-Preston-Chezzetcook until 2025

Mitchell Brison, Brison Developments owner/founder and brother of Scott Brison, who served as president of the Treasury Board and Liberal MP for Kings-Hants until 2018

President Dan Roscoe, founder of Renewall and son-in-law of David Dingwall, who served as Liberal MP for Cape Breton-East Richmond until 1997 and who held federal cabinet positions

David Howell, chief financial officer for Brison Developments

Scott Rodgers and Ramsey Ali of Slate Asset Management

A big monetary infusion blows east

The Mersey River Wind Farm got a big shot in the arm last week during an announcement in Hunts Point by federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resource Tim Hodgson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson, Canada Infrastructure Bank CEO Ehren Cory and Premier Tim Houston.

The project will get a $206-million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, $25 million from Natural Resources Canada and a federal Clean Technology Tax Credit worth up to $122.5 million.

The Canada Infrastructure Bank, a Crown corporation, refused to provide the interest rate or terms of its loan.

In a written statement, Natural Resources Canada said its $25 million is “a conditionally repayable contribution agreement where funding would be repayable based on profits generated from the project within the first five years of operation.“

Swastikas were found on three neighbouring businesses in the city’s St-Laurent borough, launching an investigation by the Montreal police hate-crimes unit.

Officers were called around 3 a.m. Wednesday after a 911 call reported graffiti on the storefront of a pharmacy on St-Louis St., according to Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils.

When officers arrived, she said, they found “hate-related graffiti” on the pharmacy as well as on two neighbouring businesses: a butcher shop and an Italian kosher restaurant called Gourmetti.

Slain Canadian woman, an anti-Khalistan influencer, targeted by killer: LaSalle police

The Windsor woman stabbed to death on Tuesday was an outspoken critic of a contentious Indian separatist movement — and she recently posted a video on social media stating she feared for her safety.

LaSalle police said Wednesday that Nancy Grewal, 45, of Windsor, was stabbed to death Tuesday at a home in LaSalle. Grewal was a social media influencer and anti-Khalistan activist.

Her death has begun attracting news media attention from India and around the world.

Grewal, who has also worked as a personal support worker, said Nov. 11 in one of her only English-language posts that a man had recently poured gasoline on her front door and set it on fire.

She said she was making the rare English post so that all “white Canadians” would understand it. “I’m a Canadian citizen, but I don’t feel safe in this country right now,” she said.

“I believe God saved me. God saved my life. Nothing happened to me. Nothing happened to my house. Everything is going good. I just called the cops. I know who this person is. This person belongs to Khalistan.”

“I feel scared. He tried to give me a warning. ‘Shut your mouth. Don’t raise your voice about this topic.’”

Grewal said she reported the incident, and other alleged complaints against the man, to Windsor police. Continue…
