Some thoughts on what is happening and how to address it from someone who has been specifically watching these events since the home PC was first introduced:

The world has changed tremendously as a result of the invention and introduction of computing technology, more specifically with the introduction of the Internet. There was tremendous optimism that drove people to undertake this work, as the large majority of the population are earnestly good people. Yet meeting the challenges related to these changes has proven to be a much larger task than almost everyone (myself included) was expecting. As a result of connecting the world, there are many divergent perspectives overlapping which had never done so in the past. Perhaps the largest destabilizing factor was that people who grew up with computers developed in entirely unexpected ways, and so they both had no clear direction as to how to navigate the world, as well as presenting a chaotic and inscrutable face to the world. As a result of this unexpected chaos, many of the ways in which people reacted to what they were witnessing were misguided (and often unnecessarily forceful) which generated a substantial quantity of negative emotions borne from deceptions which arose naturally. Despite the fact that there were no actors responsible for these deceptions, they still provided substance which could be abused, and very abruptly a small population of bad actors found their efforts to sew chaos magnified immensely.

So what can be done now to return the world to a good place in which people are capable of trusting each other enough to work collaboratively for the common good once again? The first and most important thing that anyone can do is to learn about the world, and each other. As much as this technology has magnified chaos, it also provides unprecedented opportunity to access the great works which have been left behind by those in the past who have faced the challenges of their times. This will take substantial direct effort, however, as we have altered the world through deliberate intention, and so we live in a world which can not be navigated without understanding and meeting that deliberate intention ourselves. Simply going with the flow is not an option in a world where the road forwards is unclear.

Understand that as a result of overlapping perspectives you will not understand many things which you see and hear about others, so work primarily upon yourself until you find solid footing upon which you can build something meaningfully beneficial to yourselves and those you meet.

Don't expect to get it all right, right away, and focus your efforts upon moving towards a world in which people are able to live cooperatively, as this is ultimately the ideal which almost all people share if for no other reason than that self interest desires friendly neighbours. Set backs and conflicts are bound to arise, as they have throughout human history, and must be met with clear eyes if we are to survive. Yet it is with eyes locked upon this logos that people have been capable of achieving and advancing through the ages, and it shall be those who can hold true to the course, seeking the world in which cooperation and mutual good will dominates, who will chart the path through these troubled times into a better future.
