OpenAI employees flagged Canadian trans school shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar’s ChatGPT queries describing gun violence scenarios last June and sought to alert authorities, but company leaders declined, citing no credible imminent risk.

 

After Van Rootselaar’s February 10 massacre, which killed his mother, brother, a teacher, and five students while injuring 25 before his suicide, OpenAI contacted the RCMP, banned his account, and supported the investigation.

 

Van Rootselaar was previously known to police, who had temporarily removed guns from his home due to mental health concerns.
