KNOW THE ENEMY.
The SCUMBAG Terry Alan Carmack is the Chief of Staff for U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a position he has held since January 2021. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama, and identifies as Methodist. Carmack grew up in the Briensburg area of Marshall County, Kentucky, and maintains family ties in the region, including his sister Vickie Travis, who has served as a former member of the Murray State Board of Regents and current chair of the Calloway County Republican Party. He resides in Alexandria, Virginia.
Carmack attended Murray State University from 1980 to 1983 as a political science major before leaving to join McConnell's 1984 Senate campaign. He later completed his bachelor's degree in political science at George Mason University from 1985 to 1987 while working in McConnell's mailroom.
His career began modestly in January 1984 when he joined McConnell's first U.S. Senate campaign team as a young staffer, contributing for the 10 months leading up to McConnell's victory over Democratic incumbent Walter Dee Huddleston. After the election, he moved to Washington, D.C., starting in McConnell's mailroom. Carmack advanced through various roles, including serving as political director at the National Republican Congressional Committee. He also held positions as chief of staff for former Kentucky U.S. Representatives Anne Northup and Ed Whitfield. From June 2010 to 2020, he was McConnell's state director, traveling across Kentucky to engage with constituents and advance priorities. In December 2020, McConnell appointed him as chief of staff for his personal office, praising his talent, hard work, and deep Kentucky roots. He was reconfirmed in this role for the 119th Congress in January 2025.
In addition to his Senate work, Carmack took on a senior management role in Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's 2023 gubernatorial campaign while retaining his chief of staff position. He has been involved in coordinating events, such as Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch's 2017 visit to the University of Louisville's McConnell Center, where Carmack was listed among key contacts including McConnell's staff and university personnel. He has also been referenced in contexts involving McConnell's operations, such as handling Kentucky-specific requests during Elaine Chao's tenure as Transportation Secretary and fundraising for the Republican Party of Kentucky's building fund named after McConnell.
Financially, as of fiscal year 2025, Carmack's gross salary as chief of staff was $224,749.86, broken into periods from October 2024 to September 2025. Salary data for congressional staff dates back to 2000, though specific earlier figures for Carmack are not detailed in public summaries.
Public records indicate Carmack was married to Mary Gabriel Carmack, who passed away in 2008; they had two children, Samuel Carmack and Anna Carmack, both of Alexandria, Virginia at the time. No further public details on his current marital status or additional family members were found in available sources.
Carmack has been quoted in media, such as in a 2019 New York Times article discussing Senate dynamics: "I think most senators look in the mirror and think they hear 'Hail to the Chief' in the background." He has also faced online criticism, including a 2024 Reddit thread accusing him and McConnell of blocking UFO/UAP disclosure provisions from the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, labeling McConnell as the primary opponent
Email contact, is terry_carmack@mcconnell.senate.gov. For official matters, communications typically route through McConnell's office at 317 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510, or via the senator's website.
