He was looking for comets, that could destroy earth.
He was an expert, as in world leading, at Caltech’s Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC)
The only way you can "see" a comet at long distance is from its infrared signature.
Its pretty obvious he found something, and they shut him up.
