Demographic

 

Greenland's population consists of 88 percent of Inuit or among people (greeners of mixed origin, mainly Inuit, Danish, German and Norwegian).The population is more mixed up in the southwestern Greenland than in other parts. The remaining 12 percent is made up of residents without inuit, mainly ethnic Danes. More than 20% of the population was born abroad, mainly in Denmark. As a result of re-emigration from the group of European immigrants, the size of the population is almost constant.

 

As a result of the fact that German missionaries in previous centuries often married Greenlandic women or adopted Greenland children, many of the inhabitants bear German-sounding surnames (s.s. ChemnitzChemnitz, Kleist and Kreutzmann). Linguistically, the two official languages dominate, Greenlandic and Danish, completely. Most of the population is bilingual and masters both languages well. Greenlandic is spoken as a native language by large parts of the Inuit and mixed population while Danish dominates among Europeans. The official language of instruction in folk school is Greenlandic, with Danish as the first foreign language. In addition to these languages, there are English and other languages in some cases.

 

A large part of Greenland's surface is considered to be anemumen and the population is very unevenly distributed: West Greenland harbors 91 per cent of the population, while the corresponding figures for East Greenland are 6.3 per cent and North Greenland 1.6 per cent.

 

Greenland is very sparsely populated with 0.026 inhabitants per square kilometre (1 per 38 square kilometer). If only the ice-free surface area is still the population density very low, 56 375 at 341 700 square kilometers makes 0.165 per square kilometer.
