Homicide detectives have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 67-year-old Caltech astrophysicist on the front porch of his Llano home this week, officials have announced.
Freddy Snyder, 29, was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office with murder, carjacking and burglary on Wednesday, Feb. 18, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. His city of residence was not available.
He's accused of shooting and killing Carl Johann Grillmair of Llano, who was found mortally wounded shortly after 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, lying on the front porch of his home in the 30700 block of 165th Street, according to sheriff's department and Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's officials.
An autopsy determined Grillmair died from a gunshot wound to the torso and the death was ruled a homicide, coroner's records show.
Deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff's Station responded to a 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon when they encountered Grillmair, who ultimately succumbed to his wounds at the scene, according to a sheriff's department statement.
"While investigating the shooting call, Palmdale Sheriffโs Station deputies also responded to a carjacking call in the same area," the statement said.
A renowned astrophysicist
Grillmair was a longtime astrophysicist at Caltech in Pasadena, according to the institution and media reports.
Colleague Sergio Fajardo-Acosta told ABC7 that Grillmair was deeply respected for his work studying subjects such as collisions between galaxies and the search for water on planets of far away stars.
"The field of astronomy has lost a great figure," he said.
"What was unique about Carl โ and he is irreplaceable โ was the ingenuity and the creativity, applying methods that nobody had ever thought of beforeโฆ and very unique detective-type methods," according to Fajardo-Acosta. "(He) was extremely hard-working, extremely creative and the most generous individual one could imagine."
Bail set at $3.175 million
Snyder was arrested in connection with the carjacking roughly five hours after the deadly shooting, records show. He was initially considered a "person of interest" in the homicide investigation, before ultimately being arrested for murder.
The burglary charge stems from an incident in December, court records show.
At that time, Snyder was arrested after allegedly trespassing at Grillmair's home while carrying a rifle, according to ABC7.
An arraignment hearing for Snyder was scheduled for March 26. He had not yet entered pleas to the charges.
Bail was set at $3.175 million pending legal proceedings.
No further details, including a possible motive for the fatal shooting, were available.
