Scientists discover oldest form of writing in mysterious Stone Age engravings

The origins of writing aren’t set in stone.

The ancient cave peoples weren’t as illiterate as portrayed in popular media. Archaeologists have discovered Paleolithic glyphs in a German cave that could potentially ''push back the history of written communication by over 30,000 years,'' per a rock-solid study in the journal Proceedings Of The National Academy of Sciences.

''According to the researchers, the symbols were engraved on artifacts that dated back some 40,000 years to the Stone Age, when early humans arrived in Europe from Africa and encountered the Neanderthals.''

Despite their age, these ancient etchings boasted a complexity comparable to the early stages of the world’s oldest writing system, cuneiform, which originated around 5,000 years ago, the New Scientist reported.

“The artifacts date back to tens of thousands of years before the first writing systems,” exclaimed study co-author Ewa Dutkiewicz, an archaeologist at Berlin’s Museum of Prehistory and Early History, Popular Science reported.

Dutkiewicz and her team had came upon this writing revelation while investigating 260 relics discovered in cave repositories in the Swabian Jura, a mountainous region in Southwest Germany. This archaeological treasure trove included flutes, carvings of animals like mammoths, and figurines of animal-human hybrids.

They were etched with a total of 22 different recurring symbols, including a V-shaped notch and lines, crosses and dots.

Hoping to shed light on the symbols, the team inputted 3,000 of the inscriptions into a Stone Age sign database with the goal of seeing how they stacked up against later writing systems. They specifically compared their patterns to proto-cuneiform, the earliest form of pre-writing, which was engraved in clay in Mesopotamia circa 3500 to 3350 BC.

“It makes sense to look at sequences, because information is not only encoded in the number of different signs you have, but… in how you combine the signs,” said study collaborator, Christian Bentz a linguist at Saarland University in Saarbrücken. He noted that up until now, there had been very “little empirical work carried out on the basic, measurable characteristics of the signs.”

While these patterns differed drastically from modern writing, their configuration was “very similar” to their Mesopotamian counterpart, according to Bentz.

This suggested that the earliest H. sapiens in Europe, a group of hunter-gatherers, had devised a system to put their thoughts on paper, er stone — one of the hallmarks of writing — and that this system was as advanced as their descendants. In other words, their mode of symbolic thought transcription wasn’t restricted to making paintings on cave walls.

Deciphering these somewhat cryptic glyphs’ meaning was decidedly more difficult, like a prehistoric Da Vinci code.

However, there were several cues that these Stone Age symbols may have been some type of calendar. A representation of a lion-human hybrid etched in mammoth ivory was carved with dots and notches in rows of 13 or 12.

Dutkiewicz theorized these might have been “calendric observations,” which would’ve tracked given that these prehistoric hunter-gathers “might want to keep track of time.”

Interestingly, Crosses, one of the most prevalent symbols, never adorned human depictions but were common on animals and tools, while dots never appeared on tools.

“These were definitely marks being made in specific locations for specific reasons,” said palaeo anthropologist Genevieve von Petzinger. “Even if we don’t know what the marks meant, we know they had meaning to the people who made them.”

Fortunately, Dutkiewicz noted that there were many sign sequences that were yet to be analyzed, declaring,'' “We’ve only just scratched the surface.”''

''Hezbollah (“Party of God”)'' was formed in 1982 in Lebanon in response to the Israeli

invasion of Lebanon during the fifteen year war. It is a Shia terrorist group that advocates Shia

empowerment on a global scale. 'Their loyalty has always been to the cleric regime of Iran and

the Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini.' They support various militant groups in their cause against

western interests. On July 23, 2013, The European Union designated Hezbollah’s military wing a

terrorist organization. Hezbollah’s existence is threatening to national security due to their

involvement in numerous anti-U.S. terrorist attacks including suicide truck bombings of the U.S.

embassy in Beirut in April 1983, the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut in October 1983, and the

U.S. Embassy annex in Beirut in September 1984. These are just a few of the attacks that they

have been involved with.

The declaration of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization “was a long overdue step making

clear to Lebanon’s Party of God that it will pay a political price for continued acts of terrorism”

(Levitt, 2013). Hezbollah are known for its armed activities, but it also runs one of the largest

most complex and sophisticated criminal networks in the world. Hassam Yaccoub, a dual

Swedish –Lebanese citizen and Hezbollah operative was sentenced to four years in prison.

Hassam Yaccoub was convicted for his participation in an organized crime group and the

preparation of criminal operations. The judiciary panel declared; “It has been proven that

Hezbollah is an organization that operates under complete secrecy… There is no doubt that this

group has multiple members and proceeds with various activities, including military training of

its members. Therefore the court rules that Hezbollah acts as a criminal organization”” (Levitt,

2013).

'Hezbollah’s involvement with crime came to fruition due to its need for funding. They

were facing financial insecurity from affiliates in Tehran and Damascus.' Hezbollah was

reportedly receiving upwards of $100 and $200 million annually from Iran and additional

resources from Syria. However, in the past few years these allies have not been able to produce

as much financial support. 'It is because of this lack of funding that Hezbollah has turned to

criminal activities.'

Hezbollah conducts criminal operations across the globe. They have formed alliances

with multiple countries in Latin America. One alliance in particular that has received attention as

''of late is with the “Los Zetas” drug cartel or drug trafficking organization (DTO) in Mexico.''

Hezbollah has created a criminal syndicate of drug trafficking through some of Mexico’s most

well connected global drug dealers. This new partnership has assisted in laundering between

$850 and $900 million.

Los Zetas

The “Los Zetas” drug cartel has been one of the most, if not the most, dangerous and

powerful drug cartels in Mexico. Mexico has been the center for “narco-wars” for the past 7

years and has produced some of the most vicious cartels and drug trafficking organizations in the

world. It is widely believed that they have now begun associating with terrorist groups and

Islamic fundamentalist groups. Hezbollah is one of these affiliates. Hezbollah as well as certain

elements of the Iranian Quds force are cooperating with cartels like Los Zetas, the most

sophisticated drug cartel in Mexico. This unit does not fear or hide from any kind of law

enforcement, rather they engage them.

EXCERPT (second link)

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2011

House of Representatives,

Subcommittee on Terrorism,

Nonproliferation, and Trade,

Committee on Foreign Affairs,

Washington, DC.

The committee met, pursuant to notice, at 12:30 p.m., in

room 2172 Rayburn House Office Building, Hon. Edward R. Royce

(chairman of the subcommittee) presiding.

Mr. Royce. This hearing will come to order. Today we're

looking at the topic of narcoterrorism. Our hearing comes as a

narcoterrorism-related case exploded into the public eye

yesterday afternoon.

'' The Justice Department detailed an Iranian directed plot to ''

''assassinate a foreign Ambassador on U.S. soil. From what we ''

''know, a key conspirator in the plot approached a Drug ''

''Enforcement Administration informant seeking to hire a drug ''

''cartel hit squad to carry out the attack here in Washington, ''

''DC.''

A plot was planned over multiple meetings in Mexico between

the man now in U.S. custody and people that he at the time

believed were cartel members.

'' Iran's Quds Force conceived of a plot to recruit Mexican''

''narcotraffickers in this assassination effort on U.S. soil.'' The

fact that they would do that I don't think should be a great

surprise. Clearly, this deadly force felt comfortable

navigating the expansive criminal networks south of our border.

For years, border security advocates saying that just

because we had one or two Hezbollah operatives come across the

border, that it was alarmism to say that this could ever

escalate into the type of situation that we face today. But

this plot proves just how important a secured border is to our

national security.
