Mexico weighs legal action after Musk links president to drug cartels

MEXICO CITY, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday she is considering legal action following a comment by tech billionaire Elon Musk, the ‌world's richest man, that alleged she was connected to drug cartels.

Musk's post on X ‌followed the capture and killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera, "El Mencho", by Mexican security forces.

In the post, Musk responded to a 2025 video of Sheinbaum discussing cartel violence and alleged that she was "saying what her cartel bosses tell her to say." He did not provide further evidence.

"We are considering whether to take legal action", Sheinbaum said during her daily morning press conference, adding that government lawyers ‌are currently reviewing the matter.

In the 2025 video, Sheinbaum said a return to a "war on drugs" was not feasible.

"Returning to the war on drugs is not an option … it is outside the framework of the law," she said.

The military offensive on cartels led by former President Felipe Calderon in 2006 led to bloody turf battles as gangs splintered, triggering a spiral of violence that many analysts see as a contributing cause to still-high homicide rates.

Sheinbaum said she expected security ‌to continue to normalize in Mexico after cartel members coordinated a series of roadblocks and arson attacks in the aftermath of the government's Sunday operation against Oseguera.

Asked if the operation marked a return to more a more violent security stance, Sheinbaum said this would never be the case.

"The detention of a suspected criminal with an arrest warrant can generate this type of ‌circumstance, but we are looking for peace, not war," she said.

Ruling MORENA party president Luisa Alcalde also reacted to the post on social media, saying Musk should use his platform and X social media network to fight ‌drug consumption, addiction, disinformation and the stop the promotion of narco culture.

"Wealth does not give moral authority," she said. "The lives that are lost in this fight, often fueled by consumption in other countries, are worth infinitely more than any fortune amassed in Silicon Valley."

‘Total disorder’: Comptroller accuses government, IDF of ‘systemic failure’ in post-Oct. 7 evacuations

Report finds gaps in preparedness, lack of up-to-date plan, shirking of ministry responsibility for 210,000 evacuees; Defense Ministry says response was coordinated despite challenges

A state comptroller report published Tuesday found a series of major failures on the part of the government and emergency authorities in the mass evacuation and relocation of over 200,000 civilians in the immediate aftermath of Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught, including late and sloppy evacuation processes, shirking of responsibility, and the lack of an agreed-upon, up-to-date protocol.

The damning report — exposing deep gaps in preparedness, coordination and responsibility among key government bodies tasked with managing the home front — is the 32nd by State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman on civilian aspects of the post-October 7 attack period.

The report examined the evacuation and relocation of some 210,000 residents from southern and northern communities during the opening stages of the war. It reviewed the preparedness of local authorities before the war, the evacuation process after its outbreak, the housing of evacuees in hotels and other facilities, and the provision of basic education and welfare services.

“The government and the IDF failed in evacuating the residents and absorbing them,” the report found, adding that authorities had, since the 2006 Second Lebanon War, been told to formalize an orderly plan, yet did not do so.

The ombudsman concluded that residents didn’t manage to coordinate their evacuation with the IDF, and in some cases, were put in needless danger during the course of their evacuation.

Institutional investors sold $8+ billion in stocks last week — second largest sale ever. OTM puts is 3X more expensive than same distance OTM calls.

Wall Street sold $8.3 billion of stock last week, which is the second-largest weekly sale ever recorded in U.S. history, according to data from Bank of America.

Retail investors stepped in and bought $1.0 billion of stock. That makes five straight weeks of buying from everyday traders. Hedge funds also added exposure. They purchased $1.2 billion, logging their eighth buying week out of the last nine. Big money sold. Smaller players and fast money bought.

Institutions offload US stocks just as dumb money and hedge funds absorb supply

Equity ETFs saw $2.2 billion in inflows during the same week. At the same time, single stock names recorded $8.3 billion in outflows. Investors favored broad funds over individual companies. The gap between ETF inflows and single-name withdrawals was clear.

Single stock outflows have now happened in 13 of the past 15 weeks. Total withdrawals over that stretch equal $52.0 billion. Institutions are selling directly into bids from retail traders and hedge funds. The flow data shows a steady transfer of ownership.

Israel sold over 24,000 weapons to Mexico, but the arms somehow ended up in the hands of drug cartels.

Factcheck:

According to multiple independent reports, between 2006 and 2018 Israel exported about 23,000–24,000 small arms (including military-grade rifles) to Mexico for use by Mexican security forces such as police and military. This was part of Mexico’s effort to combat drug cartels during that period.

✔️ Investigations — including research by human-rights groups — found that some of those weapons later ended up in the hands of drug cartels after being diverted from official security forces.

✔️ Arms manufacturers are also known to sell weapons to governments that, with weak internal controls or corruption, can allow those arms to leak into illicit markets. This is a global problem, not unique to Israel.

So the sale of weapons is real and leakage to cartels has occurred, but the weapons were not sold directly to cartels by Israel and there is no evidence that the Israeli government intentionally armed criminal groups.

Epstein Was Tipped Off on Raids, Removed Evidence Before Police Arrived

Newly reviewed financial records and emails reveal that Jeffrey Epstein quietly stashed computers, photographs, CDs, and other explosive materials in storage units scattered across the United States to hide the evidence from authorities as federal investigators closed in.

Records show that the convicted child predator was tipped off about police raids on his properties and paid private investigators to move the evidence as authorities prepared search warrants.

The details, first reported by The Telegraph, suggest that key materials connected to the convicted sex trafficker may have been hidden from investigators, and possibly never seized.

Six Storage Units, Paid for Until His Death

According to the report, Epstein rented at least six storage units nationwide, beginning as early as 2003.

Credit card records show he continued paying for them until 2019, the year he died in federal custody.

The units reportedly housed items from Epstein’s properties, including computers and CDs from Little Saint James, his private “Pedophile Island” in the Caribbean.

Search warrants included in the 3 million documents recently released by the Department of Justice reportedly indicate that federal authorities may never have searched these storage facilities.

If true, that raises an explosive question about where that material is now.

Private Detectives Moving Material Before Raids

Emails reviewed by The Telegraph show that Epstein allegedly directed private investigators to move computers and other materials out of his homes before law enforcement could execute search warrants.

Tucker Carlson says Netanyahu is 'completely evil, completely destructive' in Saudi interview

In his interview with Saudi state network Al Liwan, Carlson hit out at the US government for going along with what he interpreted as Israel’s demands to overthrow the Islamic Regime in Iran.

Far-right American pundit Tucker Carlson appeared on Saudi state-owned TV network on Saturday to double down on a myriad of anti-Israel claims he previously made.

The interview aired days after his visit to Israel, during which he grilled US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on prioritizing Israel over the US, civilian casualties during the war in Gaza, and convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, amongst other topics. However, he notably kept his responses lighter on Saudi state network Al Liwan and failed to mention cases of Saudi abuse of human rights, such as the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

During the interview, Carlson hit out at US political leaders, who he claimed were more loyal to Israel than to America.

“What I really object to, what makes me mad, is when American leaders, whose job it is to represent Americans, are more loyal to a foreign country than they are to their own,” he said.

“They [US political leaders] have instead sent billions and billions and billions of dollars to a foreign country. And none of that has helped the United States. In fact, it's hurt the United States.”

He then hit out at the US government for going along with what he interpreted as Israel’s demands to overthrow the Islamic Regime in Iran.

“How is it in America's interest to decapitate the government of Iran on behalf of Israel? Not to rebuild a new Iran, but just to kind of kill the people in charge and hope something better happens. To create chaos in Iran, as we have done at Israel's behest in so many countries in the region, as you well know since you live in the region,” he said. “This is bad for us, this is bad for the surrounding countries, it is bad for the world, I don't think it's good for Israel. Actually, I don't think Israel understands its own long-term interest very well, [but] that's my view.”

Carlson accuses Israel of land grab in Gaza

He also characterized the war in Gaza as a “land grab” by Israel.

“The idea that we had to pretend that the Gaza operation is like a response to October 7, and it's not an effort to expand the territory of Israel, that's insulting to me because that's a lie. That's what it is.”

Carlson also doubled down on previous defamatory comments he made about Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During the interview, host Abdullah Al Mudaifer played a clip from a separate interview, in which Carlson claimed Netanyahu is “completely evil and completely destructive.”

“He's not the only world leader who's evil and destructive, by the way, again, but he is. and he's hurting the United States, and he's destroying his own country, and I think he imperils the world,” he said. “I think that clearly they're going to try and blow up al-Aqsa mosque, I believe that, on the Temple Mount to build a third temple, and then you've got global war. So like he's a threat. There's no question he's a threat to the Trump administration. No question."

He affirmed that he believed “every word” of his older comments, and did not offer any apologies for them.

Epstein Boasted of Trafficking Children to His Island for Abuse

A chilling email exchange has emerged from the latest Jeffrey Epstein files release in which the convicted predator gloats about trafficking children to his private island to be abused.

The newly uncovered emails are raising fresh alarm as they show Epstein proudly boasting about his reputation as the man who traffics and rapes children on Little Saint James, his private “Pedophile Island” in the Caribbean.

In an email to Russian venture capitalist Masha Drokova, Epstein described a conversation involving a film director researching “a really bad guy that gets children for sex sent to his island.”

Epstein wrote:

“She almost fainted when I told her that person is me.”

Drokova responded:

“she is very emotional.

“while kind, loving and sharp.

“I think you can become friends too,”

She also added:

“she was doing a VR movie not researching anyone.

“interesting that this part is appeared in your conversation.”

https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA01010128.pdf

The email is now begun circulating widely online following the DOJ’s release of millions of Epstein-related documents.

Whistleblower Ready to Talk, Then Suddenly Silenced

The files also reveal that French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, described by prosecutors as one of Epstein’s key recruiters of underage girls, was reportedly prepared in 2016 to cooperate with U.S. authorities.

According to handwritten notes from a federal prosecutor dated February 2016:

“One of Epstein’s bfs, Jean Luc Brunel, has helped get girls.”

“He is wanting to cooperate.”

The notes further state:

“Brunel is afraid of being prosecuted.”

At the time, Brunel’s attorney was reportedly in discussions with lawyers representing Epstein’s victims about arranging a meeting with federal prosecutors in Manhattan, potentially in exchange for immunity.

Brunel’s lawyer allegedly indicated that his client had recruited girls for Epstein and possessed incriminating photographs.

He was reportedly prepared to walk into the U.S. Attorney’s office.

He never did.

$3 Million to Keep Quiet?

The documents show that Epstein learned Brunel was considering cooperating.

On May 3, 2016, Epstein emailed Kathy Ruemmler, a former Obama administration official who later became general counsel at Goldman Sachs, warning that Brunel planned to approach federal prosecutors.

Epstein wrote that one of Brunel’s associates had:

“asked for 3 million dollars so that Jean Luc would not go in.”

Shortly after, Brunel stopped communicating with authorities.

Prosecutors believe Brunel may have received money to prevent him from blowing the whistle on Epstein’s network.

Years later, Brunel was arrested in France on child sex trafficking charges.

Like Epstein, he was found dead in his jail cell while awaiting trial.

U.S. Navy Relieves Truxtun Captain After Caribbean Collision

The Navy announced on Sunday that it relieved the commanding officer of the USS Truxtun following a loss of confidence in his leadership after the destroyer’s collision with another vessel.

The move signals a clear emphasis on accountability at the highest levels of shipboard command.

Cmdr. James Koffi was dismissed from his post Sunday by Rear Adm. Carlos Sardiello, who leads U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command. The firing comes nearly two weeks after the Truxtun collided with the USNS Supply during a replenishment at sea in the Caribbean on February 11.

Here's What They're Not Telling You About Your Retirement

This sequence underscores the Navy’s process for evaluating incidents at sea and the performance of senior leadership in ensuring safe and effective operations.

“The Navy maintains the highest standards for leaders and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” a Navy release said. The service frequently uses the phrase “loss of confidence” to justify removals of senior officers, though the exact considerations behind such actions are managed through a formal review process.

The public statement makes clear that leadership responsibilities remain central to naval readiness and accountability.

The Navy is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Two sailors sustained minor injuries and were listed in stable condition, a reminder that even routine logistics operations at sea can carry significant risk.
