WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE CHAIRMAN OF THE US HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ASK AUSTRALIA'S E-SAFETY COMMISSIONER TO EXPLAIN HERSELF?
Congressman Jim Jordan is the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in Washington DC. On 18 November 2025, Chairman Jordan formally wrote to Australia's E-Safety Commissioner, Ms Julie Inman Grant:
"The Committee on the Judiciary of the U.S. House of Representatives is conducting oversight of how foreign laws, regulations, and judicial orders compel, coerce, or influence companies to censor speech in the United States.
As the Australian eSafety Commissioner, you are the official primarily responsible for enforcing Australia’s Online Safety Act (OSA), which imposes obligations on American companies and threatens speech of American citizens.
Your expansive interpretation and enforcement of Australia’s OSA—including your claim of extraterritorial jurisdiction to censor speech outside of Australia—directly threatens American speech. Global content takedown orders are concerning because they harm the free speech rights of those outside of Australia’s jurisdiction and set the precedent that other governments may do the same.
The Committee has also learned that you have colluded with pro-censorship entities in the United States to facilitate Australia’s, and other, global censorship regimes.
Accordingly, we respectfully request your cooperation and ask that you make yourself available for a transcribed interview with the Committee. Please contact Committee staff to schedule your transcribed interview as soon as possible but no later than 10:00 a.m. on December 2, 2025."
The following day Ms Inman Grant said she would 'consider the request.' The deadline passed on 2 December but the next day she appeared at Senate Estimates in Canberra where she said she would 'explain a few things.'
But by 30 December 2025, Chairman Jordan still hadn't received anything of substance from Ms Inman Grant … so again he wrote to her:
"On November 18, 2025, the Committee requested your testimony at a transcribed interview. On December 2, 2025, you declined to testify, stating that you were “not in a position to attend an interview.” We write to reiterate our request for your voluntary testimony.
Your testimony remains vital to the Committee’s oversight. Your attendance at the Stanford event also undermines the argument that you are “not in a position to attend an interview” in the United States. Clearly, you are willing and able to return to the United States when it suits you.
The Supreme Court has recognized that Congress has broad authority to gather information from U.S. persons to inform legislative reforms. The Court has explained that compliance with a congressional inquiry is a “public duty, which every person within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Government is bound to perform when properly summoned.
In other contexts, courts have routinely found that U.S. citizens living abroad are within the jurisdiction of the U.S. government and can be compelled to provide testimony.
Accordingly, we reiterate our request for your cooperation. Please contact Committee staff to schedule your transcribed interview as soon as possible but no later than 10:00 a.m. ET on January 13, 2026. The Committee may have to consider, if necessary, additional steps to obtain compliance with our request."
So the 13 January 2026 passed with Ms Inman Grant not actioning this congressional request. She was questioned on 16 January 2026 however and said, "We're engaging with Chairman Jordan and the Committee and no determination has been made yet. But I think I'll defer to the Government."
The government she is deferring to is her mates in the Albanese Government. I understand she has engaged lawyers and the resources of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney-General's Department. She has now responded to Chairman Jordan … but that letter has not been made public. Why the secrecy?

DEMS at the SOTU tonight looked like they got hit with a surprise pop quiz on “How to Look Presidential While Your Party Is Actively Imploding 101”… and they clearly didn’t study. They sat there blinking like Windows 95 trying to open a 4K video — total system freeze. Every time the camera panned over, you could practically hear the dial-up modem noises coming from their section. By the end they were shuffling out like they just found out the open bar was actually just seltzer water and existential dread. Faces screaming “404: Confidence Not Found.” They’ve got less momentum right now than a deflated campaign balloon in February. Completely lost, and totally cooked.
