One of the largest mistakes people make is to discount the critical voice inside their heads. It's sometimes harsh, and it is not at all straight forward, but it will always guide your attention to areas of yourself where you are lacking. More importantly, the issues it highlights are things which you already know the solution to (I suspect that's the reason your inner mind highlights it).
If you can learn to accept that voice as a compassionate yet firm guide, you can grow tremendously because of it.
But seriously, it's not at all straight forward. Your mind existed before you were introduced to language, and so the core of it's expressions are sometimes clumsily translated. If you get really comfortable with it though, you'll find it offers much more guidance without using words at all.
