US-Iran talks conclude with claims of progress but few details

Technical discussions to continue in Vienna, but unclear whether differences can be resolved to avoid war.

Another round of indirect talks between Iranian and United States officials ended with a mediator claiming “significant progress” but still no clear evidence that either side was willing to concede enough on their positions to avoid war.

After the conclusion of the talks in Geneva on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said further technical talks would be held next week in Vienna and progress had been “good”.

“These were the most serious and longest talks,” Araghchi said.

Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, who mediated the talks, said Iranian and US diplomats would consult with their governments before the Vienna talks.

Few details have emerged about the discussions, but Araghchi was reported to have met US envoy Steve Witkoff – if only briefly, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

The Iranian team, led by Araghchi, handed over on Wednesday night Tehran’s written proposals to Al Busaidi, who also mediated previous rounds of talks in Geneva and Muscat.

The Omani diplomat then met with the US delegation on Thursday, led by Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Al Busaidi mediated between the two teams throughout the day, and the US delegation also held separate talks over Ukraine.

Also taking part in the talks was Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which will have to undertake nuclear monitoring and verification duties in Iran in case of any agreement.

The UN watchdog will hold several days of board meetings starting on March 6, which is around the 10- to 15-day deadline floated by Trump last week for Iran to reach a deal.

Western media outlets have suggested the board could once again consider a move to censure Iran depending on the results of the Geneva talks. Iran has accused Grossi of taking politicised action and criticised the IAEA after Israel attacked Iran in June, one day after the agency passed a resolution saying Tehran was not complying with its commitment to nuclear safeguards.

According to reports, he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge and completed the court-mandated “rehabilitation” process.

In interviews, Campos has not shied away from his predator past, telling ABC 30, “I’ve been given a chance to rehabilitate through the courts and go back into the system.”

In fact, he is attempting to use his child porn past as a campaign selling point.

“They say let’s choose somebody outside the box, somebody who knows the system from the inside out, because me, I’ve experienced the laws that we are trying to reform right now,” Campos said.

ICE and Israeli Military Supplier Receives Millions in Subsidies from NYC

City-owned Brooklyn Navy Yard provides Crye Precision more than $2 million in rent and construction incentives.

New York City offers a contractor for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Israeli Defense Forces millions of dollars in rent and construction subsidies, according to leases obtained by Drop Site through a Freedom of Information Law request.

The company, Crye Precision, designs and manufactures “combat proven” tactical gear and clothing for military applications and has been a tenant of the Brooklyn Navy Yard since 2002, according to the website of the city-owned complex.

Incentives offered by the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Crye Precision contrast with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s policy positions. Earlier this month, Mamdani issued an executive order reaffirming the city’s “sanctuary” status and restricting local agencies from collaborating with federal immigration enforcement. The mayor also campaigned extensively against the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The Mayor’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Publicly available federal contracts indicate that Crye Precision received its latest contract from the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Border Patrol and ICE, on January 19. The $40,000 contract for cold weather apparel for the Border Patrol’s Maine sector coincided with ICE’s “surge” in the state, which resulted in the warrantless arrests of more than 200 people, according to the office of Gov. Janet Mills (D).

Drop Site previously reported that Crye Precision has produced camouflage gear for the Israeli Defense Forces. According to a whistleblower familiar with its operations, the company has continued to supply the Israeli military since the start of the Gaza genocide.

Crye Precision did not respond to requests for comment.

The company currently holds three leases for spaces in the Brooklyn Navy Yard complex that were signed in 2012, 2019, and 2022. The leases range in size from 8,000 to 85,000 square feet, in terms of five to 20 years, with options to renew.

Anthony Albanese is right that we need to “turn the heat down”. He should start by looking in a mirror.

Even if the threatening messages that caused Albanese to be evacuated from The Lodge on Tuesday were more to do with Shen Yun than anything personal against the Prime Minister, the ordeal was still a reminder that even in a peaceful country there are bad actors.

But addressing the matter at the Herald Sun’s Future Victoria Forum on Wednesday, Albanese said: “I think it's just a reminder, take every opportunity to tell people, turn the heat down for goodness sake. Like, you know, we can't take these things for granted. Turn it down.”

Fine by me, but what are we turning down exactly?

Words that drum up fear about all our political leaders, or just the Prime Minister?

Because here is what he said to The Guardian’s Australian Politics podcast last week:

“Pauline Hanson appeals to our darkest forces. I want to appeal to light, to optimism, and to unity, because that’s the way our country will go forward.”

Pretty high-temperature stuff for my tastebuds.

Appearing later on Karl Stefanovic’s podcast, he insisted he didn’t call One Nation supporters the “darkest forces” in our society, but was only “describing Pauline Hanson”.

But let’s flesh that out.

To say that Pauline Hanson appeals to “darkest forces” is to cast her as some sort of Sauron-like figure, whispering in the ear of mankind the poisoned words that awaken the “darkest forces” within our hearts, that inspires us to (the horror, the horror!) vote One Nation.

So then what are One Nation voters, in this way of Albanese’s thinking, other than those who have had their hearts poisoned by Pauline Hanson?

How are her voters not anything other than the embodiment of those dark forces he fears?

That’s already high-temperature enough, but let’s then consider the downstream effects of such talk - the effects Albanese is so quick to remind us all he believes exist.

IDF strikes Hezbollah military compounds in eastern Lebanon; teenager said killed

The Israeli Air Force carried out multiple strikes in eastern Lebanon on Thursday, which it said targeted eight military compounds belonging to Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said the Israeli strikes had killed a teenager.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, the sites in the Beqaa Valley area were used by Hezbollah to store numerous weapons, including rockets, as well as for training by the Radwan Force for planned attacks on Israel.

Hezbollah’s activity at the sites and attempts by the terror group to rearm “constitute a violation of the ceasefire understandings between Israel and Lebanon, and pose a threat to the State of Israel,” the IDF said.

The Radwan Force was previously tasked with invading Israel in a future war, and the IDF says the elite unit had advanced the terror group’s “Conquer the Galilee” plan for years, until the 2023-2024 war that saw most of Hezbollah’s leadership eliminated.

Airstrikes in Lebanon have become routine as the IDF says Hezbollah is continuing to rebuild its capabilities in violation of the November 2024 US-brokered ceasefire. Israel says it has killed over 400 Hezbollah operatives and members of allied terror groups in that time.
