Firefly Aerospace prepares Alpha rocket for 1st launch since explosive mishaps last year

Firefly Aerospace is getting ready to launch its Alpha rocket after a 10-month hiatus.
The Texas-based company is targeting no earlier than March 1 for the launch of its "Stairway to Seven" mission, which it hopes will restore confidence in its Alpha rocket after two explosive events grounded the vehicle last year.
"Stairway to Seven" will be the seventh launch for Alpha overall and its first since the "Message in a Booster" mission last April, which aimed to loft a prototype satellite for Lockheed Martin.
But things didn't go well on that flight: The rocket's first stage broke apart moments after stage separation, resulting in the loss of the payload.
That was followed by another mishap in September, when the booster originally intended for Alpha's seventh flight exploded during prelaunch testing.
Alpha's test stand and other other nearby facilities were spared any damage from September's "combustion event," Firefly wrote in an update, but the incident nonetheless added months to the company's development plans as a cause was investigated.
Firefly concluded that investigation in November, pinning the cause on "a process error during stage one integration that resulted in a minute hydrocarbon contamination."
That finding ruled out a design flaw in the launch vehicle itself.
Now, Firefly says that Alpha's seventh mission is finally ready to fly. The mission was originally supposed to launch another Lockheed Martin payload, but Firefly has repurposed it as a test flight to reverify Alpha's systems using a demo payload.
The "Stairway to Seven" first stage completed a 20-second static test fire of its four Reaver engines on the launch pad at California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Feb. 6 and is currently progressing toward a March 1 launch opportunity.
"Stairway to Seven" will be the final flight of Alpha's Block I configuration, as Firefly continues upgrades to the launch vehicle to expand its capabilities.
"Flight 7 will test and validate key systems ahead of Firefly’s Block II configuration upgrade on Flight 8 that’s designed to enhance reliability and manufacturability across the vehicle," the company wrote on the mission's website.
Firefly has designed the Alpha Block II to be 7 feet (2.13 meters) taller than its 96.7-foot-tall (29.6-m) predecessor. It's manufactured with carbon composite components and features upgraded thermal protections and improved avionics and power systems, according to the company.
To date, only two of Alpha's six orbital missions have been fully successful, but Firefly is focused on more than just launch vehicles. The company's uncrewed Blue Ghost moon lander became the first private spacecraft ever to successfully complete a mission on the lunar surface.
Blue Ghost touched down last March on its debut mission, delivering a suite of NASA-sponsored instruments in a milestone that underscored Firefly’s broader ambitions beyond Earth orbit.

The stream will feature live views from Los Angeles, Western Australia and potentially more, with expert commentary provided by journalist Anne Buckle and astrophysicist Graham Jones.
Virtual Telescope Project
The Virtual Telescope Project will host a livestream of its own, providing a global perspective of the eclipse starting at 3:30 a.m. EST (0830 GMT), with live views coming from a team of astrophotographers in Australia, the United States and Canada.
Gianluca Masi, the organization's founder, will provide live commentary.
Griffith Observatory
Our final livestream comes courtesy of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, which will stream views of the eclipse on its YouTube channel beginning at 3:37 a.m. EST (0837 GMT).
From its vantage point on the west coast of America, the observatory will be perfectly positioned to provide coverage throughout the eclipse, running from the penumbral phase through totality and beyond, as Earth's shadow retreats from the lunar disk.

Third time still not a charm: Space One cancels rocket launch

Japan’s Space One on Sunday canceled the launch of its third Kairos small rocket, putting a dent in the company’s bid to be the first Japanese private company to place satellites into orbit with a domestically developed rocket.
The company stated that the postponement was due to unfavorable weather conditions. This is the second time the launch of the 18-meter rocket was canceled in the past week, after an earlier attempt scheduled for Wednesday was also postponed due to the weather.
Space One has faced a turbulent time getting its rockets into orbit, with two failed launch attempts in 2024.
The first Kairos rocket exploded shortly after liftoff in March, and the second flight was aborted roughly three minutes after launch in December.
Space One is targeting the growing small-satellite market with what it calls Space Express Services, aiming to deliver payloads at a lower cost and with higher frequency.
The Kairos rocket is structurally simpler than Japan’s larger launch vehicles and uses commercially available components to curb costs. The unit was slated to carry five satellites.
It’s a sensitive time for Japan’s space transportation sector. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)’s flagship H3 rocket failed to launch in December, and the cause remains under investigation.
JAXA’s smaller Epsilon rocket was put on the back burner in 2022 following a failed launch of the sixth rocket, while development of its successor, the Epsilon S, has also faced difficulties.
As a result, Japan currently lacks a readily available domestic launch-vehicle capable of reliably sending satellites into orbit, reducing confidence in its space transportation capabilities.
Many see expanding the country’s space industry as critical to Japan’s long-term economic growth, but without dependable launch services, it may struggle to secure stable satellite orders in an increasingly competitive global market.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 29 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
A live webcast of this mission will begin about five minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the X TV app.
This will be the 26th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-6, SES O3b mPOWER-B, USSF-124, Bluebird 1-5, Nusantara Lima (PSN N5), and 20 Starlink missions.
Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Oil Depot Catches Fire in Makiivka After Drone Strike

In temporarily occupied Makiivka, a suburb of Donetsk, an oil depot caught fire after a drone attack carried out by Ukraine’s Defense Forces.
The Supernova+ Telegram channel reported the incident and published a video from the scene.
The strike took place on the night of March 1. Shortly beforehand, local residents reported seeing drones flying over the city.
Local residents recorded video showing large flames and a massive column of black smoke visible from afar, and confirmed that the strike hit the oil depot.
A day earlier, drones from the 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces struck an oil depot in temporarily occupied Luhansk.
“Less fuel means fewer opportunities for maneuvering, rotations, and supporting assault operations,” the military shared.
A previous strike on the oil depot in Russian-occupied Luhansk occurred on February 22. At that time, a large fire also broke out at the facility.

Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei killed in strike, Iranian media says

With his death, the Islamic Republic has in effect reached its end and will very soon be cast into the dustbin of history," the statement read.
"Honorable and courageous people of Iran, while this may mark the beginning of our great national celebration, it is not the end of the road. Remain vigilant and prepared. The time for a widespread and decisive presence in the streets is very near.
"Together, united and steadfast, we will secure final victory and celebrate Iran’s freedom throughout our Ahuric homeland."
Khamenei had ruled the Islamic Republic of Iran since 1989, previously serving as president under Ruhollah Khomeini’s regime from 1981 until his ascension to the supreme leader. He was 86 years old.
Earlier on Saturday, Iranian officials promised to release a recording from Khamenei soon after Israeli strikes targeted his Tehran compound. The preliminary assessment among Israeli officials was that Khamenei was hurt in the strike.
No official confirmation has been received by Israeli, American, or Iranian sources.

The target of several assassination attempts
Khamenei has been the target of several assassination attempts since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Most notably, on June 27, 1981, a bomb exploded during a speech at a mosque in Tehran, severely injuring him and permanently paralysing his right arm.
He was born in Mashhad, northeast Iran, in April 1939, settling in Qom in 1958, where he began attending lessons by Ruhollah Khomeini, later the leader of the Islamic Revolution and first supreme leader.
He had six children, one of whom, Mojtaba, has been touted in recent years as a possible successor as supreme leader.

Since the start of the Iranian aggression on Saturday, the Kuwaiti Air Defence Force has engaged and destroyed several ballistic missiles and drones heading toward the Gulf state, the Army HQ posted on X.
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al Otaibi, clarified that a total of 97 Iranian ballistic missiles and 283 drones launched toward Kuwait were detected and engaged according to the rules of engagement.
The spokesperson noted that interception operations against the missiles and drones caused debris to fall on some facilities in scattered areas, leading to minor material damage.
Kuwait Ministry of Defence said the targets were detected and intercepted within the operational zone south of the country as part of full readiness measures to protect the airspace, noting that no injuries were reported.
Kuwait News Agency quoted the spokesperson as affirming that the armed forces continue to carry out their duties and address any potential developments to ensure the security and stability of the country.
The General Staff of the Army urged citizens and residents to obtain information from official sources and to avoid circulating rumours or unverified information.

A famous actor and comedian has the internet talking after alleging that he heard a planet-sized object is heading toward Earth.
Michael Ian Black, formerly of The State and presently a panelist on Have I Got News for You, recently gave an interview to the Vetted podcast. In the interview, he revealed some startling information.
According to Black, he “became friendly with somebody in the UFO community.” Consequently, he was invited to a small Signal chat to discuss UFO news and information. For context, Signal is an encrypted private messaging app.
“Over the course of 18 months or so, this story begins to emerge from the person who invited me in that there is an object. It’s planet-sized. It’s coming from out of our solar system into our solar system.
It is decelerating. It has been decelerating for a couple of years, I think, at that point. And, it’s expected to enter our solar system around 2027,” Black states.
The biggest bombshell? “It’s intelligently controlled.”
Black then says he was provided with an image of the mysterious object.
“It was gray, it was round, it could have been anything,” he states.
Initially, Black says he expressed skepticism about this story.
“As soon as I heard ‘planet-sized,’ I was like, ‘Wait, that doesn’t make any sense to me at all, because it seems to me if you have a planet-sized object entering your solar system, other planets are gonna feel that. Like, we’re gonna see that.
It’s gonna show up,” he says. “Then again, just because something’s planet-sized doesn’t mean it has planet-sized mass. So, I don’t know.”
Black then references a video released by ufologist Jeremy Corbell. In this video, Corbell states that the governments of the world would soon be pushing a lie that “there’s an object approaching Earth, and it’ll be here in 2027.”
Black isn’t sure what to make of this, but he calls it “a huge data point.”
In a blog post, Black stated that he tends to favor Corbell’s explanation.
“I don’t know who’s telling the truth about this, but I’m going to apply Occam’s Razor here and say it’s far more likely that somebody wants to convince people about an imminent alien incursion than there actually being an alien incursion.
So I’m siding with Corbell on this one,” Black writes.

So, What’s Really Going On Here?
Chances are high that all of these claims—that there’s a planet-sized mass heading toward Earth, or that there’s a concerted effort to push the lie that there is one—are entirely fake.
First, neither side of the debate has provided any evidence for their claims whatsoever. There are no space agencies in any country on Earth claiming that this is actually going to happen.
Additionally, no research confirms the existence of a planet-sized object approaching our solar system for a 2027 arrival.
For this to be the case, such an object would have to be collectively recognized and ignored by space agencies across the world. This includes nations currently at conflict with each other.
While such coordination is theoretically possible, the people proposing these theories provide no evidence of its existence. Explanations of the supposed object instead tend to rely on the alleged existence of a cover-up, not of the object itself.
There is also zero evidence of any “intelligently controlled” object. As previously covered by BroBible, recent claims of “intelligently controlled” space phenomena are largely disputed and have little evidence.
What About Corbell’s Prediction?
Second, as previously noted by BroBible, Corbell’s prediction regarding a mass disinformation push is effectively meaningless.
In the original claim, he says that governments want people to believe an object is arriving in 2027. He also adds that, now that he’s revealed this information, the specifics around the plan might change. Such a caveat effectively negates the entire claim.
To provide an example, if someone claimed that they discovered a government-run weather machine that was sure to make it rain today—but that, now that they’ve revealed the information, the plans might change—any weather event after such a claim suddenly becomes explicable.
Rain means that the claimant was right; no rain means that the government realized people were on their tail and canceled their plans. Snow or another weather event means that they simply changed the machine, but the spirit of the claim was still correct.
Is The Year 2027 Important?
So, why the year 2027? The real answer is it’s just a year that’s been passed around UFO circles for some time.
While discussions of 2027 became more popular last year, Black himself notes in his blog post that several others in the UFO community have spent years referencing the 2026 to 2027 time period as important.
In fact, in 2023, a thread on Reddit’s r/aliens noted the popularity of the year 2027.
The post simply asks, “What’s the Deal With 2027?” Commenters in the thread seemed to come to the consensus that the selection of the year was somewhat arbitrary.
To summarize, you probably don’t need to worry about an intelligently-controlled planet-sized object hitting the world anytime soon.
You also (probably) don’t need to worry about a disinformation campaign to try to get you to believe that’s actually happening.
Should you worry about aliens at all? The answer to that question is up to you.

Mysterious UFO hotspots uncovered around underwater canyons off US coasts

New research has suggested that UFOs could be clustering around underwater canyons off the US coastline, raising fresh questions about whether mysterious craft could be operating beneath the ocean.
An analysis of more than 80,000 reports found concentrated clusters of sightings near steep submarine canyon systems, particularly along the West Coast.
The findings stem from an independent study testing the so-called 'cryptoterrestrial hypothesis,' which proposes that unidentified aerial phenomena could originate from hidden non-human intelligence on Earth rather than distant planets.
Using publicly available UFO sighting data and detailed ocean depth maps, the report identified correlations between reported sightings and deep underwater terrain features.
The analysis also uncovered a striking geographical anomaly, with clustering patterns appearing on the West Coast but not on the East or Gulf coasts.
Three regions, La Jolla, Mugu Canyon, and Monterey Canyon, showed unusually high concentrations of sightings compared with population-based expectations.
The report suggested sightings could occur in temporal bursts rather than being evenly distributed over time.
While the findings stop short of proving any underwater origin, they add data-driven support to growing scientific interest in unexplained objects moving between air and sea.
The study was conducted by Antoni Wędzikowski, a Warsaw-based lawyer and independent researcher who analyzed 80,000 UFO reports from the nonprofit National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) and compared them with bathymetric data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The cryptoterrestrial hypothesis has gained renewed attention in recent years due to several high-profile military encounters involving objects that appeared to transition between air and sea.
One of the most famous incidents occurred in November 2004, when US Navy pilots aboard the USS Nimitz detected multiple unidentified objects descending from 80,000 feet in less than a second during training exercises off Southern California.
Cmdr. David Fravor later described seeing a white, capsule-shaped craft, dubbed the 'Tic Tac,' that appeared to intelligently respond to the pilots' maneuvers.
Wędzikowski's study found that UFO sightings near submarine canyons did not occur randomly but tended to cluster in bursts over short periods.
'First, the analysis did find a statistically significant spatial association between submarine canyon features and UAP report density along the US West Coast,' he said.
'These are not trivial numbers. The association also correctly predicted 4 out of 5 top hotspot cells.' 'But the second surprise was equally important: the effect is absent on the East and Gulf Coasts. It is not a universal pattern.
It concentrates in specific West Coast regions, primarily Puget Sound and the San Diego canyon system, and does not generalize across the full US coastline.'

Each of the three major clusters of sightings was associated with deep underwater topography.
In these areas, the number of sightings far exceeded what would be expected based on population distribution alone.
La Jolla recorded 820 sightings, compared with an expected baseline of just 55, according to the researcher's model.
However, Wędzikowski cautioned that the results do not prove that unidentified craft are emerging from the ocean.
He acknowledged that social factors could explain some clustering, such as increased reports following widely publicized sightings.
Still, he argued that the geographic patterns warrant further investigation using independent datasets and additional methods, including sonar analysis.
By comparing sonar records with UAP sighting clusters, he said it could help determine whether unexplained underwater activity coincides with reported hotspots.
Wędzikowski now has plans to publish his methodology and data for peer review and urged other researchers to replicate the findings.
Using the AI tool Claude Code, he corrected for population density and other confounding variables, then examined whether sightings clustered near steep underwater terrain.
'The specific hypothesis, that UAP report density might correlate with submarine canyon features along the coastline, came from noticing that several well-known hotspot areas sit above unusually steep underwater topography,' Wędzikowski told Daily Mail.
'Rather than treat that as evidence of anything, I wanted to test it properly: population-controlled, with confound checks, temporal replication, and clear documentation of what survives scrutiny and what doesn't.'
Wędzikowski said he was surprised that no one had previously conducted such a systematic geospatial analysis of the publicly available data.
'I've followed the UAP topic for years, and what consistently frustrated me was the gap between the data that actually exists and the way the subject is typically discussed, which tends to rely on individual case narratives or speculation rather than systematic analysis,' he explained.
'There are tens of thousands of geolocated sighting reports in public databases like NUFORC. The data has been sitting in public databases for decades.
The tools to test it are standard geospatial statistics. The surprising thing is not the result. It's that nobody looked.'

While Vanga did not predict this exact scenario, she foretold that the planet would not end until 5079, thus the potentially devastating conflict would not be the end of humanity.
She also cautioned that society is about to reach a tipping point where it will recognize that it has "gone too far."
According to fans, the clairvoyant predicted a moment when societies would jointly admit they had surpassed ethical and technological bounds. This forecast is claimed to be centered on technology and morality.
