Russia has lost contact with Iran’s nuclear sector leadership – Rosatom
The status of atomic installations across the country is unclear amid the continuing US-Israeli attacks, Russia’s state nuclear corporation chief says
Moscow has lost contact with the leadership of Iran’s nuclear sector amid the US and Israeli attack on the country, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has said.
On Tuesday, Rosatom’s Director General Alexey Likhachev said the operations at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in southern Iran have been suspended due to airstrikes in its vicinity, with some 639 Russian personnel remaining at the facility. The company has been the key contractor at the plant, currently constructing its second and third power units.
While Rosatom continues to work with Iranian officials at the plant, the company has lost communications with the leadership of the country’s nuclear sector, and the status of other nuclear installations in the country remains unclear, Likhachev noted.
“The station is certainly under threat, as explosions are already being heard kilometers away from the station’s physical perimeter. They aren’t aimed at the station but at the military installations located there, but the threat is clearly growing,” Likhachev stated.
The situation at the power plant remains “under control,” Rosatom’s head added. On Saturday, Rosatom stated it had evacuated nearly 100 people from Iran, including nonessential staff and employees’ children. According to Likachev, the company plans to evacuate an additional 150-200 personnel from the facility “when the situation allows.”
The plant currently contains a large stockpile of fissive materials, including 70 tons of nuclear fuel and more than 210 tons of depleted fuel, Likhachev stated. Any hit on the stockpile is bound to result in a catastrophic incident of, at least, “regional” proportions, he warned.
Russia has played a key role in Iran’s civilian atomic program, notably at the Bushehr plant. The construction of the power plant was started in the mid 1970s by a West German company, but was suspended in the wake of the Islamic Revolution in 1980. The project was revived by Rosatom in the 1990s, with the Russian nuclear energy giant launching the plant’s first power unit in the early 2010s.

Satellite images show no technical grounds for halting Russian oil transit, the Hungarian prime minister has said
The Druzhba oil pipeline remains fully capable of transporting Russian crude, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said, urging Ukraine to immediately restore shipments.
The Soviet-era pipeline, part of which runs through Ukraine, went offline in January after Kiev claimed it had been damaged by Russian strikes – accusations Moscow denies. Hungary and Slovakia, both heavily reliant on Russian energy, have accused Kiev of deliberately cutting them off for political reasons and inventing obstacles for restarting oil flows.
In a video message on Facebook on Monday, Orban said Budapest had obtained new satellite intelligence confirming the pipeline remains functional. He spoke after an emergency Security Council meeting on the issue.
“Based on the satellite images and operational information available to us, it is clear that the Druzhba oil pipeline is operational… Therefore, there are no technical obstacles to restarting the line,”Orban said.
“We once again urge Zelensky to restart the pipeline and, in order to resolve the disputes, allow Hungarian and Slovak inspectors to inspect the site… Zelensky is engaging in plain extortion against Hungary. Hungary will not back down, and we will break the oil blockade.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said satellite images “clearly show”Zelensky is “lying,” saying that there is no technical reason to block the pipeline. He added that in light of the uncertainty in maritime oil transport following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, shutting a functioning land route amounts to an attack on Hungary.
Zelensky, who earlier blocked a joint Hungarian-Slovak delegation from accessing the site, mocked Orban as a “magician,” arguing that underground facilities cannot be assessed via satellite imagery. Orban later called the remarks “unacceptable” and said he would raise the issue with the European Commission, demanding it enforce Kiev’s transit obligations.

Israel hacked Tehran cameras before Khamenei assassination – FT
The Iranian supreme leader was killed on Saturday while he was “having breakfast,” US President Donald Trump has said
Israeli intelligence hacked nearly all of Tehran’s traffic cameras to prepare the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Financial Times has reported, citing sources.
The US and Israel attacked Iran on Saturday, killing Khamenei and other senior officials.
The cameras in the Iranian capital had been hacked for years, with feeds encrypted and transmitted to Israel, the outlet wrote on Monday.
One camera, installed on the street where Khamenei’s compound was located, provided an angle allowing analysts to track the vehicles and routines of security personnel. The data was reportedly processed to build what spies call a “pattern of life” of officials and their guards.
Israel also disrupted components of mobile phone towers near the compound to block potential warnings, according to the FT.
The attack on Iran had been planned for months but the operation was adjusted after US and Israeli intelligence confirmed that Khamenei and his senior officials would be meeting in his compound in Tehran on Saturday morning. The US reportedly had a human source in Tehran who provided confirmation.
Khamenei was having breakfast with senior aides at the time of the strike, US President Donald Trump told Fox News on Monday. They were “thinking they were safe because it was in broad daylight,” he added.
Trump framed the campaign, dubbed Operation Epic Fury, as necessary to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Tehran has insisted the strikes were entirely unprovoked and has retaliated with missiles and drones targeting Israel and US bases across the Middle East.
According to the FT, over the years, “Israel has assassinated hundreds of people overseas, including militant leaders, nuclear scientists, chemical engineers – and many innocent bystanders.”
(I find this last paragraph ironic, that it seems like Russia is outraged about the same thing Israel does, they all do this around the world.)

US troops told Trump’s attack on Iran is ‘signal fire for Armageddon’
A US military religious freedom advocacy group has received over 200 complaints about Christian fundamentalist speeches by commanding officers
Multiple commanders across all branches of the US military have offered a fundamentalistChristian explanation for the attack on Iran, describing President Donald Trump as the harbinger of the Second Coming and the conflict itself as a “signal fire” for Armageddon, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) has reported.
The MRFF, a US non-profit promoting the separation of church and state, as well as freedom of conscience within the military, said on Tuesday that it had received more than 200 complaints from active members of the US military over extremist Christian speeches delivered by commanding officers since the start of the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
One of the complaints was lodged by a non-commissioned officer (NCO) with a unit in Ready-Support status, which can be deployed into the Iran combat zone at any time. The commander of the unit “urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan,’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ,” the NCO wrote.
“He said that ‘President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth.’ He had a big grin on his face when he said all of this, which made his message seem even more crazy,” he noted.
The MRFF founder and president, Mikey Weinstein, a US Air Force veteran and legal counsel under the Reagan administration, said that most of those who reached the group have reported “unrestricted euphoria of their commanders and command chains” over the purportedly “biblically-sanctioned” war on Iran.
“Any military members seeking to take advantage of their subordinates by advancing their blood-soaked, Christian nationalist wet dreams upon the flames of this latest non-Congressionally sanctioned attack against Iran should be swiftly, aggressively, and visibly prosecuted,” Weinstein said in a statement.
The MRFF has long sounded the alarm over the rapidly growing Christian nationalist sentiment among the US military top brass. The advocacy has repeatedly called out US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth over his openly religious activities, including participation in Bible study events and hosting hardline Christian nationalist preachers at the Pentagon.

An employee of the U.S. State Department was fatally shot by a Virginia trooperfollowing a deadly stabbing on the Capital Beltway in Virginia Sunday afternoon.
In an update Tuesday, Virginia State Police said the women who were wounded didn’t know the knife-wielding man before the road-rage incident, which happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 495.
Michele Adams, 39, of Fairfax, died from her wounds and another three women were taken to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday.
A dog who was stabbed to death belonged to the man armed with a knife, according to a news release from police
A state trooper said he shot and killed Jared Llamado, of McLean, in self-defense after the 32-year-old allegedly confronted him with a knife.
A State Department spokesperson confirmed to WTOP that Llamado worked as a foreign service officer.
“We are aware of the tragic incident that involved a Foreign Service Officer and occurred on Sunday, March 1, in Fairfax County, Virginia. We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy,” a spokesperson told WTOP in an email.
Llamado died at a hospital after being shot by the trooper, who wasn’t injured.
According to his LinkedIn, Llamado had been working at the State Department for about a year and half in a technology role.
The spokesperson directed questions about the incident to Virginia State Police, who are investigating the incident.
Police believe the stabbings happened after a vehicle crash on the Beltway at exit 52, near the Little River Turnpike.
Law enforcement has offered few details about the crash except to say that the women were not inside Llamado’s vehicle. The women who were wounded but survived include a 36-year-old, 37-year-old and 40-year-old.
The investigation shutdown the main lanes of the Capital Beltway Outer Loop, before Little River Turnpike, for hours Sunday.
Police said Llamado is the only suspect in the stabbings, which are not believed to be related to terrorism.

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump says the worst-case scenario in Iran would be someone taking over the country who is just as bad as the current regime.
“I guess the worst case would be — we do this, and then somebody takes over who’s as bad as the previous person… That could happen,” Trump says in response to a question from reporters in the Oval Office during a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
“We’d like to see somebody in there that’s going to bring it back for the people,” Trump adds.
He warns against Iranians taking to the streets while the bombing is ongoing.
Asked about Reza Pahlavi, the son of the late exiled former Iranian shah, Trump says that he seems like a nice guy but that someone currently living in Iran would probably be a more suitable candidate to take over the country.
