Oil from Venezuela and Iran have made up approximately 20/25% of China's oil imports.
I'm still doing some research on consumption vs. production, but with the essential seizure of Venezuelan and Iranian oil with respect to China, I see oil as the pressure point for improved trade concessions from China, with the carrot being increased availability of OPEC oil (at the US's request).
Russia could up production, but my very cursory analysis makes me think this is the play for actually fixing our trade imbalance with China.

It generated no income.

To understand how he is moving his pieces into checkmate, we first need to conceptualise the final position.
