Sanctioned Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz sinks in the Med

A sanctioned Russian LNG tanker, Arctic Metagaz, has sunk in the central Mediterranean after suffering explosions and a subsequent fire, Libyan port authorities and Moscow said, though the cause remains disputed. Video circulating online purportedly showed the 138,028 cu m ship ablaze before it went down roughly 130 nautical miles north of Sirte. Maltese and Libyan rescue coordination located the crew alive after they abandoned ship. Maltese authorities reported all 30 Russians were found safe and sound in a lifeboat.
Russia’s transport ministry alleged the attack was carried out by “uncrewed sea drones” launched from the Libyan coast and denounced the incident as “an act of international terrorism and maritime piracy,” saying the vessel had been carrying LNG cleared under international rules. President Vladimir Putin told state television, “This is a terrorist attack. This isn’t the first time we’ve encountered something like this,” accusing Kyiv of responsibility. Ukrainian authorities declined to comment while Libyan authorities said the cause of the fire was unclear.
The Arctic Metagaz, linked to Russia’s sanctioned Arctic LNG‑2 project, had loaded LNG at the Saam floating storage unit and departed Murmansk on February 24. Tracking data suggest the ship sailed into the Mediterranean and its AIS signal disappeared about 30 nautical miles off Malta prior to the incident. Libyan officials said the vessel was carrying about 62,000 tonnes of LNG and warned ships to avoid the site and report any pollution.
Splash has reported on a series of other explosions over the past year in the Mediterranean, predominantly on crude tankers, linked to Ukrainian special forces with drones and limpet mines deployed.
