Trump asks Republicans if he should fire Noem

President Donald Trump has been surveying Hill Republicans on whether he should fire Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, according to multiple Republicans who have spoken with the president. We have much more on this below.

Trump dialed up some GOP senators after Noem testified in front of the Senate and House Judiciary panels on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Those appearances were marked by extraordinarily bitter exchanges between Noem and Democratic lawmakers, especially over Trump’s harsh immigration crackdown.

But some of the most notable exchanges, especially in the Senate hearing, were with Republicans.

Trump was said to be especially upset about Noem’s response when Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) pressed her Tuesday about a government-funded ad campaign that Kennedy said only served to boost her own personal name recognition nationally.

The $220 million contract for the ad campaign was awarded to an LLC which subcontracted with a company run by the husband of former DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. The ads were filmed in October at Mount Rushmore. Ben Yoho, McLaughlin’s husband, said he made $226,137.17 for his work.

Under questioning from Kennedy, Noem said repeatedly that Trump personally approved the controversial ad blitz featuring her in the lead role. This has so angered Trump that Noem’s future at DHS may be at risk, we’re told.

Kennedy: “The president approved ahead of time you spending $220 million running TV ads across the country in which you are featured prominently?”

Noem: “Yes sir, we went through the legal processes …”

Kennedy: “Did the president know you were gonna do this?”

Noem: “Yes.”

Kennedy: “He did?”

Noem: “Uh huh, yes.”

More from Kennedy: “They were effective in your name recognition. To me it puts the president in a terribly awkward spot.”

Noem also came under heavy scrutiny from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), leading the retiring Republican to declare that he’ll gum up the Senate floor unless Noem addresses his questions over a range of issues. Tillis has called on Noem to resign.

Noem’s relationship with Corey Lewandowski, her top aide, has been the subject of intense speculation as well. Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee asked Noem several times on Wednesday if she had a sexual relationship with Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager. Noem refused to answer the question, calling it “tabloid garbage.”

A scuffle broke out on Capitol Hill involving a former Marine, a Republican senator, and police

A former US Marine protesting the war with Iran was injured during a scuffle with police and a senator on Wednesday after interrupting a Senate hearing on Washington's Capitol Hill and shouting, “No one wants to fight for Israel.”

The protester, Brian McGinnis, a Marine veteran and Green Party candidate in North Carolina’s Senate race, disrupted a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing that was hearing testimony from members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Video from the incident shows police and Senator Tim Sheehy attempting to remove McGinnis from the room as he clung to a doorframe. During the struggle, his right arm appeared to snap, prompting a bystander to shout, “His hand, his hand!”

Another person later asked McGinnis, “Is your hand okay?” He replied, “No, it’s not.”

Sheehy, a Republican from Montana, said he saw police dealing with “an unhinged protester” and decided to intervene “to help out and deescalate the situation.”

“This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one,” the senator wrote on X.

Capitol Police said McGinnis was “violently resisting and fighting our officers’ attempts to remove him from the room.”

Police added that McGinnis faces three counts of assaulting a police officer and three counts of “resisting arrest and crowding, obstructing, and incommoding for the unlawful demonstration.”

According to court documents, Keke Komeko Johnson, 53, of Goldsboro; Francine Sims Super, 64, of Kinston; Brandon Eugene Sims, 40, of Manvel, Texas; and Kimberly Mable Sims, 39, of Snow Hill; operated Life Touch, LLC, a purported substance abuse facility operating in Kinston and Goldsboro, and 1st Choice Healthcare Services, a urine drug screening company. Between 2018 and 2023, Inmates Johnson and Super oversaw payments of more than $1 Million in illegal kickbacks to Life Touch’s Medicaid patients, who were drug users. They paid these kickbacks to lure patients to show up for costly substance abuse and lab services that Inmate Johnson billed to Medicaid on behalf of Life Touch and 1st Choice. Inmate Sims, Inmate Super’s daughter, owned 1st Choice Healthcare, and paid Medicaid kickbacks to Inmates Super and Johnson for fake lab services ordered by Life Touch, LLC. Meanwhile, Inmate Brandon Sims, who owned Life Touch and resided in Texas, received Millions in illegal proceeds from the Life Touch operation, but failed to file or pay taxes on that money. The gift card kickback scheme resulted in more than $12.7 Million fake billings to the Medicaid program.
