What is jury nullification, and why has it played a quiet but powerful role throughout history?

Jury nullification occurs when jurors vote “not guilty” even if they believe a defendant technically violated the law—because they believe the law itself is unjust, misapplied, or harmful. While rarely discussed in courtrooms, jury nullification has shaped major moments in legal and social history.

In this video, we explore:

What jury nullification is (and what it isn’t)

How jury nullification is legal

Famous historical examples of jury nullification

The modern jury nullification movement and the story of the “Sandwich Guy”

Whether you see jury nullification as a safeguard against fascism and injustice or a threat to the rule of law, understanding it is essential to understanding how juries really work—and how ordinary people have sometimes checked unjust systems from the jury box.

Freedom Trainers

About Us

Our History

Before Donald Trump’s election, an informal group of trainers—many with experience working under authoritarian regimes—began asking a sobering question: what would people need if he won? One answer rose above the rest, echoed by pro-democracy movements worldwide: training. Out of those early conversations, Freedom Trainers was formed.

Today, Freedom Trainers is a decentralized network of experienced educators and organizers, including leaders from the Horizons Project, Choose Democracy, Beautiful Trouble, and Free DC. Together, we work to counter democratic backsliding by equipping people with the skills and strategies of strategic noncooperation.

Our trainings are grounded in three core pillars:

Know the authoritarian playbook — Understanding how authoritarians consolidate power.

Understand the pillars of support — Develop a sense of how authoritarian power is vulnerable.

Build noncooperation skills — Developing the noncooperation practices that fracture authoritarian support.

All of our trainings draw on rigorous pro-democracy research and data, combined with popular education and direct action training. Around the world, movements that successfully resist authoritarianism invest heavily in training—and it remains one of the clearest “no-regrets” strategies for strengthening civil society and nonviolent resistance.

Since launching in 2024, Freedom Trainers has trained hundreds of thousands of committed people across the United States.

I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Our Team

Our team includes Keya Chatterjee, Nadine Bloch, Daniel Hunter, Jeff Ordower, Maria Stephan, Tabatha Pilgrim Thompson, Ash-Lee Henderson, and others.

Our values

Strategic nonviolent noncooperation over state violence. We oppose state violence through strategic organizing and collective noncooperation, taking a clear and principled stand against all forms of violence and oppression.

Solidarity across movements. We stand in solidarity with movements for equality, freedom, and liberation, and welcome all people committed to that struggle.

Mass participation, not ideological purity. We believe resisting authoritarianism requires a mass movement—one that embraces disagreement and works with people we may not align with on every issue.

Deep, participatory democracy. We strive for a democracy rooted in people’s wisdom, where communities have real power and direct control over their own futures.

About Defend the 612

Defend 612 Logo Blue

On Dec 1, the federal government initiated ‘Operation Metro Surge’ in the Twin Cities — deploying ICE and other federal enforcement agencies to Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs against the will of the people. This federal occupation soon spread to the entire state of Minnesota.

In the days since – as anyone with brown or black complexion but especially Somali, Latinx and immigrant communities, have faced relentless harassment, intimidation, and abduction, detention, and deportation – hundreds of thousands of community members across dozens of neighborhoods and cities have mounted hyper-local decentralized community defense structures and actions to protect their communities and neighbors. Through organizing their own autonomous, community-based, decentralized rapid response networks, neighbors have kept each other informed about ICE activity in real-time and have quickly come together to actively protect their family, friends, neighbors, blocks, schools, places of worship, neighborhoods, and cities.

Every day there are more and more people with the energy, willingness, courage, and commitment to be active in protecting their community from militarization, occupation, kidnappings, abductions, and violence. Every single neighborhood in Minneapolis has created support and Rapid Response groups with emerging structures and processes for getting involved. What is true across the entire Twin Cities metro is that none of us are alone, and we will keep our neighbor safe.

Defend the 612 is a grassroots volunteer attempt to help community members and neighbors get connected to one another.

This website is intended educate people on exercising their constitutionally protected rights. Defend the 612 does not promote, endorse, or condone behavior that involves violence or threats to human safety or well-being.
