Iran appeared to surveil center where U.S. forces were killed in Kuwait, Army memo says

By James LaPorta

March 5, 2026 / 8:45 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — In the week before an Iranian retaliatory strike that killed six American service members in Kuwait as the U.S.-Israeli war with Tehran began, Iranian intelligence was likely able to identify and track U.S. forces moving off military installations as a part of the Pentagon's force protection plan. The troops had moved in anticipation of the preemptive strikes on Iran, according to a U.S. Army Central memo reviewed by CBS News.

U.S. Army Central is a component of U.S. Central Command, the primary unit conducting operations against Iran. Its memo said that the U.S. had determined that Iranian-aligned militia groups used a combination of intelligence capabilities to monitor U.S. troop movements.

Smaller quad-copter drones were seen flying around the Shuaiba port in Kuwait and were suspected of conducting reconnaissance ahead of the drone strike attack, according to three U.S. military officials, speaking under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media outlets.

A day after the six Americans were killed on March 1, U.S. forces recovered GPS transponders connected to balloons or parachutes near Patriot Missile Defense Systems. It's unclear what these transponders were used for or if they played a role in the drones launched by Iran.

CBS News did not obtain the Army Central memo, but reviewed it and independently verified the authenticity of the contents. The document seen by CBS News did not have classification markings attached. The memo sought to pass information up from Army Central to higher command.

CBS News is withholding the publishing of information that concerns current force protection measures designed to protect U.S. troops following the March 1 attack.

U.S. Army Central referred questions to U.S. Central Command, which did not reply.

In a joint news conference at the Pentagon Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, briefed the media on U.S. military operations against Iran, dubbed Operation Epic Fury.

Hegseth explained that before launching major combat operations, the Defense Department prioritized protection of U.S. troops above everything else.

U.S. forces aren't holding back on the mission to sink the entire Iranian Navy. Today, an Iranian drone carrier, roughly the size of a WWII aircraft carrier, was struck and is now on fire.

‘That’s bad for him to say’: Trump puts Paxton on notice in Texas Senate primary

The president appeared to scold the attorney general.

President Donald Trump appears to be leaning toward endorsing Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas GOP Senate primary, issuing a stark warning to state Attorney General Ken Paxton in an interview with POLITICO.

The president, in a brief phone conversation Thursday morning, said an endorsement will be “made pretty soon” before addressing Paxton, who recently said he would not drop out of the race even if Trump endorses Cornyn.

“Well, that’s bad for him to say,” Trump said. “That is bad for him.So maybe, maybe that leads me to go the other direction.”

Trump had previously stated he would ask the candidate he does not endorse to step aside.

Senate Republicans have already asked Trump to back Cornyn, who narrowly pulled ahead of Paxton on Tuesday in the first round of the primary. The two now face a heated runoff, which could last for another three months unless one of them ends their campaign.

The battle between Cornyn and Paxton has been expensive and full of personal attacks between the candidates. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has called Paxton a “wife-cheater and fraud.” His ex-wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, filed for divorce “on biblical grounds.”

Both Cornyn and Paxton have lobbied hard for the president’s support.

Trump appeared confident that the Republican candidate could beat state Rep. James Talarico, who outright defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett for the Democratic nomination earlier this week.Trump called Talarico “a terribly weak candidate” who is “more woke than even the very highly untalented Jasmine Crockett.”

“I think he’s going to be much easier than her, because he doesn’t have a real following,” Trump said.

==Paxton appeared to walk back his vow to stay in the race.

In a post to X on Thursday, Paxton said he would “consider” dropping out if the Senate passes the SAVE America Act, which tightens voting practices. He also used the post to reaffirm his loyalty to Trump.==

“The truth is clear: No one has been more loyal to Donald Trump than me — fighting the stolen 2020 election, being in Mar-a-Lago when he announced his 2024 campaign, and standing with him in NY in the face of lawfare,” Paxton said. “For the good of our country and for the good of passing President Trump’s agenda, I am determined to help him get this done.”

House rejects Massie's war powers resolution

(The President can’t be stopped by that, it’s obvious the House are time wasters and do nothing for the country. Idiots!)

House rejects Massie's war powers resolution

BY Erin Kelly Washington, D.C.

PUBLISHED 6:43 PM ET Mar. 05, 2026

WASHINGTON — By a vote of 219-212, the House on Thursday rejected a war powers resolution on Iran, cosponsored by Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Crescent Springs.

What You Need To Know

The U.S. House rejected a war powers resolution on Iran co-sponsored by Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Crescent Springs

Massie said the resolution would reassert that Congress must decide questions of war

The vote followed hours of debate on Wednesday and the Senate’s rejection of a similar measure from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, was the only Kentucky congressman to join Massie in support of his resolution

Over several hours Wednesday, lawmakers debated the measure Massie said would reassert that Congress must decide questions of war.

“If American lives are to be risked and American blood is to be shed, that decision must be debated and voted on by the representatives of the American people,” Massie said Wednesday. “And that debate is meant to be arduous. And that vote is meant to be hard. I have a theory. I think my colleagues don’t want to go on record because we have a terrible track record of meddling in the Middle East.”

Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, was the only Kentucky congressman to join Massie in support of his resolution.

“The decision to go to war is so consequential that our founders were clear: no one person — not a president or a king — should have that power,” McGarvey said in a statement Thursday. “The grave responsibility of putting our service members in harm’s way, plus spending the billions of taxpayer dollars this war will cost, rests squarely with Congress and the people who send them there.”

A similar resolution, cosponsored by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., failed to move forward Wednesday.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had urged his colleagues to vote against it.

“Make no mistake about it: This war belongs to the mullahs in Tehran,” McConnell said Wednesday. “As I’ve explained so many times over the years, the powers of the President for the use of military force, with or without prior congressional approval, are actually well-established.”

Massie and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., first introduced their resolution back in June, when President Donald Trump was weighing whether to help Israel attack Iran’s nuclear program.

Democrats ramped up pressure for a vote on the resolution following the U.S. and Israel’s recent attack on Iran.

All of these idiots are embarrassing and time wasters

Iranian Warship Surrenders to Sri Lankans, First Time Ship Interned By Neutral Nation Since Second World War

Oliver JJ Lane5 Mar 2026

The captain of a ship of the Iranian Navy has handed his vessel over to the Sri Lankan government,a neutral party, for internment, saving the lives of his crew hours after another Iranian warship was destroyed nearby by the United States Navy.

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) has assumed control of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ship (IRIS) Bushehr, a fleet supply ship(oiler). Sri Lanka has sent craft to receive the 1970s-era ship within its territorial waters and, per local media, has taken off 208 officers and men, who are to be sent ashore. The ship will now be taken by the Sri Lankans to Trincomalee for internment for the duration of hostilities.

The Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said his government had selected the historic port of Trincomalee due to the risk of disruption to maritime traffic by the presence of the inactive warship, so they wished to keep it away from the country’s primary commercial port, Colombo. The Times of India reports Dissanayake said: “we are not taking sides in this conflict, but while maintaining our neutrality we are taking action to save lives.”

Neither Sri Lanka nor Iran have yet officially confirmed that the ship was surrendered by her captain. Yet the ship only arrived in Sri Lankan waters this morning and according to the long-established laws of armed conflict at sea the Bushehr would have been entitled to spend 24 hours in the waters of a neutral country without fear from attack.

The fact the ship has been handed over to the Sri Lankan authorities so quickly strongly suggests the captain took the decision to preserve the life of his men by opting out of the conflict.

Had Sri Lanka not interned the ship within 24 hours, or compelled the Iranians to leave their territory, the United States would have been free to sink the ship, even inside Sri Lankan territorial waters or harbours. The International Red Cross states on this subject:

It is generally accepted that if belligerent forces enter neutral territory and the neutral authority is unable or unwilling to expel or intern them, the adverse party is entitled to undertake their hot pursuit and attack them there. It may even seek compensation from the neutral State for this breach of neutrality. The mere presence of belligerent forces does not justify hot pursuit, there must be some failure by the neutral State to uphold its neutrality.

Under those same laws of war, the cost to the captain and crew is that they too are to be interned in Sri Lanka for the remainder of the conflict. The officers may be given parole, but would not be free to leave the territory of Sri Lanka.

Given the facts as known, this is the first time since the Second World War that a warship has been interned by the government of a neutral power. During the Second World War, several damaged U-Boats were able to limp to neutral harbours and turn themselves over to the authorities after being damaged in attacks, preferring to see out the remainder of the war in captivity rather than the certainty of death at sea.

The internment of the IRIS Bushehr follows by a day the destruction of the Iranian frigate IRIS DENA in international waters to the south of Sri Lanka. The first sinking of an enemy ship by a United States submarine since the Second World War and the first officially acknowledged such sinking anywhere since 1982, the U.S. Department of War published periscope footage of the moment of destruction.

Trump urges Iran diplomats around the world to seek asylum

Updated: 01:20 Gm

President Donald Trump called on members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, military and policeto lay down their arms or face death, offering immunity to those who defect and urging Iranian diplomats abroad to seek asylum.

Trump also saidIran was “calling” for negotiations while appearing to praise Iran's fight back.

"They have no air defense. All of their airplanes are gone. Their communications are gone. Missiles are gone. Launches are gone. About 60% and 64%, respectively.Other than that, they're doing quite well. I said, what's left? But they're tough, and they want to fight." he said.

"And they're calling. They're saying, how do we make a deal?I said, you're being a little bit late, and we want to fight now more than they do.

Trump added that Washington would ensure whoever leads Iran next “will not threaten America or its neighbors.”
