First, I want to say I understand your point and I empathize with your statement. However, I have come to a different conclusion, that God used reasoning appropriate to the level of human development at that time. I understand you are not using the phrase figuratively and metaphorically, but if you were to interpret it literally, it is indeed a horrifying picture, being drenched in blood.
You can imagine a less developed humankind being comforted by this kind of power-god imagery of power and horror, but I instead choose to reframe and walk with the light. Of course you are free to disagree, I just wanted to explain my viewpoint.
