Iran Foreign Minister Claims U.S. Attacked Water Desalination Plant

On Saturday morning, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi took to X and claimed that U.S. military forces had "committed a blatant and desperate crime by attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island."

"Water supply in 30 villages has been impacted. Attacking Iran's infrastructure is a dangerous move with grave consequences. The U.S. set this precedent, not Iran," Araghchi said.

Shortly after Araghchi's post, a Community Note attached to his tweet read, "There is currently no independent confirmation from international media or monitoring organizations that the U.S. attacked a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island."

Whether confirmed or not, the worst-case scenario for the conflict is one in which freshwater desalination plants are targeted, either intentionally or by accident.

This risk was first raised earlier last week by Bloomberg commodities analyst Javier Blas, who said, "A lot of attention about 'soft targets' like hotels and airports. And about oil/gas facilities. But please keep an eye on what may prove the most strategic asset for Persian Gulf countries: water desalination plants."

The US State Department has approved the emergency sale of 1,000-pound bombs to Israel, bypassing congressional review.

The contract, worth an estimated $151.8 million, covers 12,000 BLU-110A/B bombs requested by West Jerusalem, the State Department said Friday.

The announcement comes as the US-Israeli air war against Iran enters its eighth day, with both allies vowing to unleash new waves of strikes.

The department said the urgent nature of the matter allows it to forgo congressional review requirements under the Arms Export Control Act.

“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a strategic regional partner that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the department said.

“The proposed sale will improve Israel’s capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and serve as a deterrent to regional threats,” it added.

Although the US and Israel had reportedly prepared for a weeks-long campaign, experts have raised concerns about whether they possess enough munitions to sustain a prolonged war. Tehran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s call for “unconditional surrender.”

More than 1,300 civilians have been killed in Iran, including 168 students at a girls’ school in Minab that was destroyed during the first wave of strikes.

The escalation has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy chokepoint through which about one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies pass.

Global oil prices have surged as the conflict approaches the one-week mark and the strait remained effectively closed to through-traffic. Brent crude climbed about 30% to above $94 per barrel, its biggest weekly gain since April 2020. US benchmark WTI rose more than 38%, briefly crossing $92 per barrel and marking its largest weekly jump since at least 1985.

Bessent stated that Washington had given India “permission” to buy Russian crude “to ease the temporary gap of oil around the world.” He also said that the US “may unsanction other Russian oil” to further boost supply.

CCP-linked Singham Network’s tax-exempt status remains as groups avoid FARA scrutiny for years

Sen. Grassley told AG Bondi last year that they have “a duty to ensure compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act […] to combat adversarial foreign governments from influencing public policy and opinion in the United States.” The far-left activist network launched by Neville Roy Singham has been the focus of investigations in the House and Senate, but it is unclear whether the DOJ or IRS are investigating too.

Republicans in Congress have spent years pushing the Justice Department and IRS to scrutinize and investigate a Chinese Communist Party-linked activist network in the U.S., but so far these groups organizing far-left protests nationwide appear to retain their tax-exempt status and have avoided any prosecutions under the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA).

That law was enacted in 1938 after extensive foreign propaganda activities occurred in the U.S. during the run-up to World War II, most notably, a 20,000-person pro-Nazi rally held in Madison Square Garden. FARA has since been amended 10 times, with the most significant overhaul occurring in 1966.

The Marxist revolutionary group known as the People’s Forum, the leftist "Act Now to Stop War and End Racism" (ANSWER) Coalition, the far-left anti-war group Code Pink, the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), and others have been put under the microscope by GOP leaders in the House and Senate over their alleged financial and personnel ties to China.

These groups did not respond to a request for comment.

Connecting the dots from activists to Singham to the CCP

Just the News has previously reported on how these and other radical activist groups have leadership links or financial ties to the funding network backed by wealthy Marxist businessman Neville Roy Singham, who himself is linked to the CCP and whom some in his network call "Comrade” — and who has also been scrutinized by Republican congressional investigators.

Congressional Republicans have long called for investigations into the Singham network, its links to the CCP, its leadership in nationwide leftwing protests, and its role in anti-Israel encampments, vandalism, and violence on campus. The GOP — especially then-Senator Marco Rubio — has for years asked the DOJ to look into possible (FARA) violations and has called upon the Treasury Department and IRS to consider revoking the tax-exempt status for Singham’s network of non-profits.

The GOP-led House Oversight Committee also voted last month to subpoena Singham for information about this sprawling activist network. The Justice Department and Treasury Department did not respond to requests for comment about their investigations — if any — into Singham and his CCP-linked network.

Singham, who lives and works in Shanghai, runs a network of pro-CCP news sites and other China-linked endeavors. Singham, who sold his ThoughtWorks tech company in 2017, has used the money to fund openly communist endeavors.
