Pentagon, FAA to test counter-drone laser weapon in New Mexico

he military and Federal Aviation Administration will conduct a high-energy laser test over the weekend, the Pentagon announced Friday, confirming DefenseScoop’s reporting earlier this week.
The FAA and Joint Interagency Task Force 401, the Defense Department’s counter-drone hub, will conduct the test at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico between March 7-8.
The test is intended to advance “the safe use of counter-unmanned aerial systems in the United States” and boost interagency coordination, according to the Pentagon.
The release did not disclose which high-energy laser system will be used in the White Sands test. A defense official, commenting on condition of anonymity, identified the platform as the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser, or AMP-HEL.
“The most important aspect of this test is to show the safety features of using the AMP-HEL in the national airspace. During the test we will use both static and flying targets.
The flying unmanned aircraft demonstrate the system’s accuracy and persistence by engaging only with targets that are clearly known and have been positively identified,” the defense official told DefenseScoop.
The announcement comes after lawmakers from both parties criticized interagency coordination over the use of domestic counter-drone technology in the wake of back-to-back incidents in Texas last month that caused airspace closures.
In mid-February, CBP used a military laser transferred from the Pentagon to down an object near El Paso, which news outlets reported to be Mylar balloons.
Only weeks later near Fort Hancock, service members shot down a CBP drone that was launched without notifying the military task force assigned to the U.S.-Mexico border.
“This is a critical step in making sure our warfighters have the most advanced tools to defend the homeland,” Army Brig. Gen. Matt Ross, director of JIATF-401, said in a statement.
“By working hand-in-hand with the FAA and our interagency partners, we are ensuring that these cutting-edge capabilities are safe, effective, and ready to protect Americans from emerging drone threats,” he added.
“Our measure of success is to quickly deliver state-of-the-art C-UAS capability to the warfighter, and this test furthers that mission.”
DefenseScoop reported Thursday that Ross and members of his team were in Kyiv last week — right before the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran — to see how Ukrainians were defending against Russian drones, a version of which are being used against American troops in the Middle East.
The Pentagon described the upcoming test in New Mexico as part of a “long-term, multi-year partnership” between the Defense Department and FAA to “ensure counter-drone technologies are safely integrated into the national airspace.”

A defense official told DefenseScoop that the agencies tested a high-energy laser last year.
“For this [upcoming] test, we are only testing one system which is part of the Army directed energy program of record,” the official said.
The event is intended to “specifically address FAA safety concerns” and gather data on the laser’s effect on aircraft stand-ins and aircrew eye safety, and validate the platform’s automated safety shut-off systems, according to the release.
CBP and the FAA did not respond to a request for comment earlier in the week from DefenseScoop regarding the White Sands test.
Following a close-door hearing from agency officials on Wednesday, senators said the departments hadn’t been adequately working together, apparent given the two airspace incidents last month, and urged the federal government to quickly fix it, DefenseScoop reported.
Those incidents broadly related to competing efforts between the military and FAA: defending the skies against drone threats while keeping the airspace safe, senators said.
“Everyone wants to see hostile drones that are a threat incapacitated, but obviously we want to do so in a way that doesn’t pose a threat to civilian aircraft, and it ought to be possible to do both at the same time,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, told reporters.
“It’s clear that in the early implementation of this technology, coordination fell far below what should have happened.”
Reuters reported that the LOCUST c-UAS system was used in the first accidental shootdown near El Paso last month.
The company that develops it, AeroVironment, did not immediately respond to questions from DefenseScoop about whether its system will be used in the White Sands test.
The Pentagon said that the White House Task Force to Restore American Airspace Sovereignty, the Army’s program acquisition executive for fires, U.S. Northern Command and Joint Task Force Southern Border (the entity that CBP didn’t notify about its drone flight near Fort Hancock) will also be involved in the test.
Members of the Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, and the New Mexico National Guard “will be in attendance,” the Pentagon said.
“The test underscores an ongoing unified federal effort to counter threats posed by unmanned aerial systems while maintaining the sovereignty and safety of U.S. airspace,” according to the military.
Advocates of using laser weapons to take down drones have touted their low cost per shot and deep magazines.

Aliens Love Racing Too? UFO Spotted at Tri-City Raceway
The posting reads:
Track officials discovered this mysterious “landing circle” this morning at the Nation’s Fastest ½-Mile Tri-Oval.
Early reports suggest a group of aliens may have touched down while scouting the 57th Running of the Apple Cup… apparently, they heard THE RACING HERE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD.
After further investigation, some witnesses believe the spacecraft may have actually looked a lot like… a motorcycle doing a burnout.
Either way, whoever (or whatever) made this landing:

I'm not sure what to believe, but I do know aliens love racing, and with the Apple Cup around the corner, I'd love to think these aliens are looking for the best seats.

UFOs Nearly Started World War 3? Soviet Nuclear Missiles 'Self-Activated' During 1982 Swarm

UFOs were reportedly involved in a near-catastrophic Soviet missile incident near Usovo in Ukraine in 1982, when newly disclosed documents indicated that nuclear weapons aimed at New York City began a launch sequence without authorisation.
The claim is based on accounts attributed to Red Army personnel and Soviet defence investigators and remains unverified.
The latest disclosure rests on a cache of Soviet-era files said to have been taken out of Russia in 1993 by American television reporter George Knapp, who later released them publicly in January.
The documents indicate a moment at the height of the Cold War when the Soviet military was quietly studying unexplained aerial phenomena, even as the state publicly dismissed UFOs as fantasy.
The 1982 Missile Scare
The central allegation is striking.
Witnesses cited in the documents told Soviet Ministry of Defence investigators that multiple unidentified craft appeared near a missile site outside Usovo, with soldiers reporting abrupt shifts in shape and colour, sudden disappearances, violent acceleration and the ability to hover in mid-air.
What makes the episode notable is not just the spectacle but the sequence that reportedly followed.
A Red Army propaganda chief is said to have reported that intercontinental ballistic missiles entered their launch procedure without authorisation while the objects hovered overhead, raising the prospect of a strike on New York that, in the logic of 1982, could easily have escalated into nuclear war.
Then, just as suddenly, the danger is said to have subsided. Radar reports cited in the coverage indicate that the missiles were deactivated only minutes before launch as the unidentified objects departed, a detail that gives the story its unnerving shape but also its clear problem.
There is no independent confirmation, no publicly produced technical record and no contemporary official statement to support the claim, so it should be treated with considerable caution.
Caution is important because the language of the coverage shifts between documentary detail and Cold War folklore. It is one thing to report that soldiers filed accounts of unusual lights.
It is another to accept that unknown craft directly interfered with the launch mechanism of Soviet nuclear missiles. The reports present the allegation, not proof.
How UFOs Stayed on the Soviet Agenda
Even so, the documents described in the coverage portray a Soviet system that was more curious than its public rhetoric suggested.
In 1953, the communist government officially dismissed UFOs as the invention of 'American imperialists,' yet Moscow later commissioned a series of studies beginning with the 'Network-AN' programme in 1979.
That effort, according to the reports, was followed by 'Galaxy-MD' from 1981 to 1985, then 'Pluton 7' in 1989 and 1990, and later 'Thread 3.'
If those programme names are accurately reproduced from the files, they indicate that the subject was not dismissed within the state as firmly as it was in public.
That contradiction is familiar in any bureaucracy, as governments often mock what they continue to investigate.
Knapp, now 73, is described as the person who brought the papers west, reportedly concealing them in a suitcase packed with caviar after the Soviet collapse.
It is a vivid image, perhaps overly so, but forms part of the lore surrounding the archive. The files are said to have been provided to him by Russian physicist and national security adviser Dr. Nikolai Kapranov.
The source also says the dossier includes at least three cases in which Soviet fighter pilots were supposedly blasted out of the sky by unknown craft.
Those incidents are mentioned only briefly, with no supporting extracts provided, so they remain background claims rather than established facts.
The Usovo story gained renewed attention because of its resemblance to a better-known American case.
The coverage links it to the 1967 incident at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana, where a glowing saucer-shaped object was said to coincide with the failure of nearly a dozen nuclear-armed Minuteman missiles.
Robert Salas, identified as the base's deputy missile combat crew commander at the time, later testified on Capitol Hill in 2023.
That parallel is likely to excite believers and irritate sceptics in equal measure. It also helps explain why the Soviet material has drawn attention three months after Knapp testified before Congress about his wider UFO investigations.
The story sits in the uneasy space where military secrecy, ageing witnesses and apocalyptic imagination all overlap. It is compelling copy, but it is not settled history.

Burlison: "Yeah, it's my hope that he does an Executive Order, and then, in addition, I think that we should make it permanent through the UAP Disclosure Act, because I don't think that the investigation will…this topic is not gonna stop when Trump leaves the White House.
This is going to be a continuing topic. Hopefully, we get all of the information up to date that we can out to the American people, to the world, but again, this is going to be, I certainly wanna put something in statute or in federal law so that it outlasts President Trump. So I think that that's important."
(Remember how many people said the EO was already issued, based on Hegseth mentioning it in an interview? Myself, and a few others, told you that that was NOT the case. A post on Truth Social, while helpful, is NOT an EO. We need the latter.)
Burlison: "So I'm trying to lead the effort to try to encourage the White House to do an Executive Order, because I think it will have teeth in it.
But even just as a statement on Truth Social, that was a green light for a lot of these agencies who have wanted to investigate this topic and dedicate resources to it.
It, basically, was giving them permission to do what they've been wanting to do. And so, that in and of itself is a big win."

Burlison: "And the other thing that it's giving is, me and our team, you know, that's being led by @repluna, a little bit more, you know, authority, if you will.
And I'm announcing this with you right now, is that we put out a letter that was sent yesterday to Marco Rubio, to Pete Hegseth, to Tulsi Gabbard and to Chris Wright in the DOE.
That is a letter from myself, that's signed by Nancy Mace, Eli Crane, Scott Perry, Anna Paulina Luna, Tim Burchett, [Suhas] Subramanyam - a Democrat member, and Andre Carson, who's a Democrat member.
"So, of note is the two individuals on this list (Perry and Carson are on the HPSCI) that signed this letter are on the Intelligence Committee.
So you have the Task Force and members of intelligence committee asking for, basically, following up on the President's [Truth Social post], and then furthermore, specifically, giving a list of items: file names that and the dates of these files, the metadata on these files that we are we're aware of, but we do not have the files themselves.
And so this letter is requesting that Congress get…that we're able to see these files, specifically."
(Fingers crossed this bears fruit and we get some of these files made public. I won't be holding my breath. Also, I like how Burlison included "the world" when he said this:
"Hopefully, we get all of the information up to date that we can out to the American people, to the world."
