The empire was founded by Cyrus II (Cyrus the Great) around 550 BCE and reached its maximum extent under Darius I and his son Xerxes around 520–480 BCE. At that point it stretched from the Indus Valley in the east to Thrace and Macedon near Greece in the west, and from Central Asia and the Black Sea region in the north down to Egypt and parts of Libya in the south.
