Clearly the Middle East is the center of attention for markets right now, with oil prices fluctuating rapidly depending on the mood of the moment, which in turn is set by rapid burst headlines which are stale by the time the next flashing red headline hits. And since every asset class now reacts to any up or down tick in oil, it leads to cross-asset chaos, to say the least. The bigger problem, of course, is that the longer the conflict lasts, and the higher oil prices rise, the more hawkish central banks will have to be no matter the AI-driven bloodbath in the labor market.

Indeed, while the Iran war is set to dominate the week ahead, we do still have those four big central bank meetings, where all eyes will be on their reaction functions to the war’s impact and the latest oil shock. Starting with the Fed, DB economists expect them to keep rates unchanged this week and think they’ll emphasize elevated geopolitical uncertainty. They only expect minor statement tweaks, including smoothed language on recent labor data (especially given January and February’s conflicting payrolls) and a nod to geopolitical risks, highlighting uncertainty and near-term upside pressure on inflation. Then at the press conference, they think Chair Powell is likely to stress that recent events mainly transmit through financial conditions—particularly oil prices. A school in Calgary, Alberta, has allegedly designated parts of its cafeteria and lunchroom as “no food” zones during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.

Fairview School reportedly sent an email to parents notifying them that the cafeteria and lunchroom would be used as “No Food Space” areas during lunchtime while the holiday is observed. The email, which was sent to parents last month and later shared on social media, said, “As we begin the month of Ramadan, we would like to acknowledge this meaningful time for many of our students, staff, and families. Ramadan is a month of reflection, prayer, generosity, and community. We extend our warm wishes to all who are observing and remain committed to ensuring our school is a supportive and respectful environment for everyone.”

The email continued by saying that to support students fasting, designated no food spaces will be provided during lunch. For students in grades 4 through 6, the cafeteria will be a “No Food Space for the first half of lunch,” and students will continue to go outside for the second half of lunch. For grades 7-9, the “lunchroom will be a No Food Space for the entire hour.” On days of bad weather, the learning commons will be a no-food space for all students in grades 4-9.

“Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering an inclusive and caring school community,” the school administration wrote.

Under federal policy introduced in 2022 barring senior Iranian officials from entering or remaining in Canada, authorities say Omidi cannot legally stay in the country.

The two-day proceeding before the Immigration and Refugee Board will determine whether a deportation order will be issued.

A judge has sentenced a teen girl to three years for setting a fellow student on fire in the hallway of a Saskatoon high school.

The 16-year-old must serve two years in intensive rehabilitative custody followed by one year in the community with supervision.

“The toll of these offences is immense. The ripples are wide and still widening,” Court of King’s Bench Justice Krista Zerr said Monday.

Three years is the maximum sentence for attempted murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The sentence was jointly recommended by both Crown and defence lawyers, after the girl pleaded guilty to the charge last year.

The Ontario government is ending financial support for seven supervised drug consumption sites this June, as the province continues to shift focus from harm reduction to treatment and abstinence.

“Drug injection sites are a failed experiment that make communities unsafe and trap vulnerable people in addiction,” Premier Doug Ford said in a March 16 social media post. “Instead of standing by as addictions get worse, we’re funding treatment and lasting recovery while keeping our communities safe.”

Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced the funding cut earlier the same day in a press release after the province sent a letter about the change to the affected sites on March 13. All seven of the sites are located in communities where the province’s new homelessness and addiction recovery treatment (HART) hubs exist.

“Through our almost $550 million investment to establish HART Hubs across the province, we are ensuring people struggling with addiction can access the care and supports they need to break the tragic cycle of addiction and rebuild their lives while protecting Ontario communities,” Jones said in the press release.

The province will initiate a 90-day wind-down period, to give clients time to transition to local HART Hubs, Jones said.

The decision will impact the final two provincially funded supervised consumption sites located in Toronto—Moss Park Overdose Prevention Site and the site at Fred Victor Centre—along with two sites in Ottawa, and one site each in Niagara, Peterborough, and London. Continue…

Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said Boegman’s upcoming appointment follows a parliamentary consultation during which his candidacy was approved by both the House of Commons and the Senate.

“Mr. Boegman will provide strong leadership in our efforts to increase transparency around foreign influence, including the management and oversight of a registry of foreign influence activities,” Anandasangaree said in a press release. “By promoting openness and increasing public awareness, these measures will increase the public’s confidence in our processes and better protect against harmful foreign interference.”

Boegman will be responsible for managing the new foreign influence registry and enforcing the Foreign Influence Transparency and Accountability Act (FITAA), Public Safety Canada said in the press release. The role involves tracking lobbying or influence efforts on behalf of foreign governments to protect Canadian democratic institutions, with powers to issue notices of violation and penalties.

The ministry said Boegman was selected based on his “extensive experience” in electoral processes after serving as the chief electoral officer of British Columbia from 2018 to 2025. He is also a former naval officer.

The Liberal government announced its intention to appoint Boegman as commissioner in late January and he was then vetted by the House of Commons procedure and House affairs committee last month. Continue…

The owner of two tigers facing an order to remove them from his property in Wainfleet, Ont., by Monday says they’re gone now and on a 14-hour road trip to a new temporary home outside Ontario.

Zohaib Masood, who had been keeping two sub-adult tigers on his former mushroom farm in the southern Niagara Region township since last fall, approached Wainfleet’s town council last week looking for an exemption to its exotic animal bylaw that expressly forbids people from keeping tigers.

“The obvious fear is what happens if these animals escape,” Mayor Brian Grant said Friday.

“He’s in a residential area. We’re talking homes everywhere, so that’s obviously our No. 1 concern.”

Wainfleet doesn’t have staff that can deal with escaped tigers, Grant said.

“We don’t have the resources to handle a situation like that,” he said. “Heaven forbid there’s a fire on the property and our fire department has to go there to put out a fire or something like that and one of these animals is escaping.” Continue…
