The federal government has spent nearly $5.5 million training medical assistance in dying (MAID) providers, including targeted funding to prepare for the expansion of euthanasia to those suffering from mental illness alone, a move Alberta is actively resisting.

According to a March 23, 2026 response to Order Paper Question Q-834, Health Canada provided $4,973,196 between 2021/22 and 2025/26 to the Canadian Association of Medical Assistance in Dying Assessors and Providers to develop and deliver the national MAID training curriculum.

That funding has now been extended through 2026/27, with an additional $550,000 allocated to broaden access beyond clinicians and build a centralized “National MAID Professionals Knowledge Base.”

On top of that, Ottawa is directing $498,000 to the Canadian Psychiatric Association over two years to develop clinical guidance specifically for MAID where mental illness is the sole underlying condition.

The documents also reveal the scale of the training push already underway.

As of January 31, 2025, 1,966 clinicians had registered for the federally funded MAID curriculum, with 1,555 completing at least one training module. Among them were 269 psychiatrists, a key group for assessing mental illness cases. Continue…

Approximately 8,500 asylum seekers were still receiving housing support through the Interim Housing Assistance Program between January 1 and September 30, 2025, according to a recent response to an Order Paper Question in the House of Commons.

That figure, notably, is based on self-reported data from provinces and municipalities and has not been verified by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The same federal response confirms that from 2020 to 2025, Ottawa directly operated hotels to house asylum claimants, citing pandemic-related pressures and strain on provincial shelter systems. In total, more than 61,000 asylum seekers were accommodated in hotels at taxpayer expense before the program was fully shut down on September 30, 2025.

Meanwhile, the cost of providing health care to asylum seekers has surged.

Federal data shows the average annual cost per claimant under the Interim Federal Health Program has nearly tripled in less than a decade, rising from $880 in 2016/2017 to $2,355 in 2024/2025.

Ontario reported the highest per-claimant costs in the most recent fiscal year at $2,595, followed by Quebec at $2,217 and Alberta at $1,934. Some regions saw dramatic spikes over time, including Yukon, where the per-claimant cost jumped to $4,050 in 2024–2025.

The federal government has not provided a total cumulative cost for the hotel program or ongoing housing supports, nor does it verify provincial reporting on how many claimants are currently being housed.

An Order Paper response reveals that since 2018, there have been more than 230,000 refugee protection hearings. In roughly 213,500 of those cases, equating to roughly 93%, IRCC did not appear at all — neither in person, virtually, or even through written submissions.

In-person attendance at these crucial hearings is basically nonexistent. Over the same period, immigration officials appeared physically in just 295 hearings, marking fewer than 20 attendances per year on average.

Canada’s international student program is once again under scrutiny after a new auditor general report detailed issues around the integrity of the program, including gaps in oversight and enforcement when it comes to potential fraud.

Auditor General Karen Hogan reported on March 24 that the immigration department failed to verify whether study permit holders were complying with the terms of their permits, and only conducted 4,057 investigations out of the over 153,000 cases flagged in 2023 and 2024.

The Toronto Police Service has announced the creation of a new counter-terrorism unit, promising “high visibility deployments” in its future operations.

“In response to an evolving security landscape, the Toronto Police Service is taking operational action to keep our communities safe by strengthening how we identify, prevent, and respond to terrorism and violent extremism,” TPS said in a press release Tuesday announcing the creation of a dedicated Counter-Terrorism Security Unit or CTSU.

“At a time of heightened tensions, and in light of the firearm discharges targeting synagogues and the U.S. Consulate in Toronto and other violent, hate-motivated incidents around the world, the Toronto Police Service continues to take proactive action,” it continued. “The CTSU will strengthen our existing security partnerships with the RCMP, the OPP, and local and international law enforcement partners, to identify and disrupt potential threats impacting Toronto and the GTA.”

The police said the new unit is not connected to one immediate threat, but cautioned that Toronto “is seeing a more complex threat environment influenced by global conflicts, online radicalization, and extremism, along with a significant increase in hate crimes.”

Toronto police said they are also launching Task Force Guardian, “to enhance police visibility in key locations including critical infrastructure, high-traffic public spaces, tourist attractions, and places of worship.” The initiative will involve uniformed officers with patrol rifles like the C8 carbine, and other long guns.

“The presence of these officers is intended to deter potential acts of violence and ensure officers are positioned to respond quickly if needed,” the police said. “The deployments are being actioned to protect people, support communities, and ensure residents can gather and move through the city safely.” Continue…

The first of the many heroes who came to the aid of Maya Gebala and Abel Mwansa Jr. after last month’s devastating Tumbler Ridge school shooting was one of their classmates, according to Bob Zimmer, MP for the tiny town beset by tragedy.

In Mwansa Jr.’s final moments of life after being grievously wounded, the 12-year-old was apparently thinking only of his mother and father and how much he loved them.

Tuesday morning in Ottawa, Zimmer told the story of the innocent boy’s touching final message for his parents that was conveyed to them by a 12-year-old girl who he said heroically tried to pull Mwansa Jr. and Gebala to safety after suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar had shot them on Feb. 10.

“‘Tell my mom and dad that I love them.’ Christina promised Abel Jr. she would pass it on and she did,” an emotional Zimmer told attendees at the 60th National Prayer Breakfast.

“The tragic yet beautiful words from a beloved son to his beloved parents.”

A Canadian man was sentenced to 46 years in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old Indiana girl last year.

The Hendricks County Prosecutor’s office said Monday that Mahdi Hosseini, a 22-year-old from an undisclosed town in Manitoba, entered guilty pleas to child molesting and other charges related to his interactions with the teenager he’d met online and later travelled to meet in Avon, her hometown west of Minneapolis.

“This defendant deliberately sought out a child, gained her trust, deceived her family, and crossed international borders to exploit her,” prosecutor Loren Delp said in a statement on Facebook.

Based on court documents reported by FOX59 and The Winnipeg Free Press after his arrest in early September, Hosseini first made contact with the minor in April through Discord, a social media messaging platform, where they cultivated a relationship that soon led to the exchange of indecent messages and photos.

The girl’s mother told authorities she was aware the girl was chatting with what she believed was a “boy” in Canada, but given the geographical distance — the border at Emerson, Manitoba is more than 1,500 kilometres away from Avon by car — she put her uneasiness aside and allowed the conversation to continue.

Hosseini, posing as the father of one of the girl’s friends, arrived at a garage sale at the mother’s home and, after purchasing some items, invited her daughter to join him and his alleged daughter for a museum visit.

She agreed, but as they drove away, she noticed his Manitoba license plates and then recalled her daughter’s communication with a Canadian “boy.”

When they returned, the mother suggested they all attend a church service together and asked that Hosseini follow them in his car. Continue…
