The FBI warned police departments in California in recent days that Iran could retaliate for American attacks by launching drones at the West Coast, according to an alert reviewed by ABC News.

“We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran,” according to the alert distributed at the end of February. “We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.”

The warning came just as the Trump administration launched its ongoing assault against the Islamic Republic. Iran has been retaliating with drone strikes against targets throughout the Mideast.

A spokeswoman for the FBI office in LA declined to comment.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

U.S. intelligence officials have also grown concerned in recent months about the expanding use of drones by Mexican drug cartels and the chance the technology could be used to attack American forces and personnel near the Mexican border.

“An uncorroborated report suggested thatunidentified Mexican cartel leaders had authorized attacks using UAS (drones) carrying explosives against US law enforcement and US military personnel along the US-Mexico border,” according to a September 2025 bulletin reviewed by ABC News. “This type of attack against US personnel or interests inside the United States would be unprecedented but exemplifies a plausible scenario, although (cartels) typically avoid actions that would result in unwanted attention or responses from US authorities.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office told ABC News: “The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is actively working with state, local and federal security officials to protect our communities.”

And the LA Sheriff's Department said that"in light of current global events" it is maintaining an "elevated level of readiness."

"Out of an abundance of caution, and in recognition of current religious observances, theDepartment has continued increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other prominent locations throughout the County," the department said in a statement.

"We have proactively reviewed our deployment plans, enhanced coordination with our patrol stations, and ensured that additional resources are available should they be needed."

ABC News contributor John Cohen, the former head of intelligence for the Department of Homeland Security, said he is concerned about the possibility of drone warfare coming from both the Pacific and Mexico.

“We know Iran has an extensive presence in Mexico and South America, they have relationships, they have the drones and now they have the incentive to conduct attacks,” Cohen said. “The FBI is smart for putting this warning out so that state and locals can be better able to prepare and respond to these types of threats. Information like this is critically important for law enforcement."

While the FBI’s warning did not specify how or when vessels carrying attack drones could get close enough to the U.S. mainland, intelligence officials have long been concerned about equipment being pre-positioned – either on land or on ships at sea – in the event Israel or the U.S. struck Iran.

President Donald Trumpsaid the U.S. had no reports of Iran putting mines out in the strategic passageway but warned, “If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before.” He said the U.S. was using the same technology and missile capabilities deployed against drug traffickers.

An unidentified projectile reportedly struckThai-flagged cargo shipthe Mayuree Naree off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, setting the vessel on fire. It comes as Iran attacks commercial ships across the Persian Gulf and Iranian drones struck Dubai airport.

Victor Davis Hanson: Trump’s Iran Outcome Dream

(His analysis and pros and cons are strategically thought out)

Less than one week since the initiation of Operation Epic Fury, and nearly everyone is wondering: What will be the domestic reaction to America’s war in Iran?

With this being the second time the U.S. has gone into Iran, something needs to change so a third time never happens.

“It would behoove Donald Trump to find a magical solution” and remove Iran’s “theocratic government,” replacing it with “a benevolent government,” explains Victor Davis Hanson on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”

“ If we get stuck in a quagmire where we have to have ground troops and we get into the hundreds of American dead, it'll be a disaster for the Republican Party in the midterms.”

Victor Davis Hanson: Barack Obama and the Politics of the Podium.

10:54

Barack and other democrats have a history to hijack funerals.

Former PresidentBarack Obama has a tendency to turn funeral eulogies into political messages.

It’s not just Obama either. The Democrat party as a whole tends to attack President Donald Trump and promote Democratic policy positions whenever there’s an opportunity, explains Victor Davis Hanson in today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words.”

“The Democrats have a long history of using the venue of the funeral memorial service to hijack it and use it for political purposes… In 2002, they did that with the late Sen. Paul Wellstone. What should have been a memorial service turned into a four-hour campaign harangue.”(that shows you how much they care even for their democrats that die.)

Victor Davis Hanson: Trump’s Iran ‘Grand Strategy’

(I really have great respect for VDH, because he clearly see’s through the glass of history and leaders.)

“ I just wanna say, you know, HR McMaster and Nadia Schadlow created the first national security strategic assessment in the first term. That was updated.

“I think Michael Anton and others updated it. It was a little bit different, but it had the same theme. The theme was that Trump is not an interventionist. He doesn't want to go into ground… but he is not an isolationist. He is a jacksonian.

He is a preemptive deterrent. That's what he wants. And his main fear in the world is China.”

Victor Davis Hanson: 8 US Presidents Dreamt of It. Trump Might Do It2/23/26

As President Donald Trump positions “the largest naval and air forces” off Iran’s coast that the U.S. has “seen since the invasion of Iraq in 2003,” he has some pros and cons to weigh about striking the Middle Eastern country.

The U.S. isn’t in a war with Iran right now, so Trump’s positioning of forces could be for “either a preventive war, long-term threat, or a preemptive war,” explains Victor Davis Hanson on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words.”

“It’s very controversial, and we don’t know whether he’s going to pull the trigger or not … He’ll have to make the decision pretty quickly because you can’t just take those many naval assets and stick them halfway across the world … The window is probably about another six weeks.” (Victor was right but his time frame was inaccurate.)

Victor Davis Hanson: Why AOC Was at Munich Security Conference

Victor Davis Hanson breaks down why Europe’s elites aren’t buying AOC’s anti-Trump grandstanding. Behind the polite applause and diplomatic smiles, they know President Trump was right about defense, energy, China, and NATO freeloading.

This is hilarious, he imitates AOC!
