UAE arrests 45 over Iran strikes videos

Sharing footage of attacks can lead to a prison term, hefty fines or deportation under the Gulf state’s laws

Forty-five people of various nationalities have been arrested for sharing videos of Iranian missile and drone strikes on the UAE, police in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi have confirmed.

Iran has extensively targeted American bases and other assets in the Gulf States since being attacked by the US and Israel in late February. Tehran says it feels “no hostility” towards its Arab neighbors, but insists that Washington’s facilities are “legitimate targets.”

The publication of videos of Iranian attacks could provoke public concern and lead to the spreading of rumors within the community, the police said on Saturday. Legal and administrative measures have been taken against those responsible, it added.

On Thursday, Detained in Dubai consultancy reported that 21 people, including a 60-year-old British national, have been charged in the UAE under the country’s cybercrime laws for filming the strikes.

Under the UAE’s laws, they could face up to two years in prison and fines ranging from around $5,500 to $54,500; foreigners risk deportation.

“The charges sound extremely vague, but serious on paper. In reality, the alleged conduct could be something as simple as sharing or commenting on a video that is already circulating online,” Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, said.

She warned that “foreigners need to understand that what may seem like normal social media behavior elsewhere can lead to arrest in the UAE.”

On Monday, Qatar said that it had detained more than 300 people for filming Iranian strikes. A few days later, Bahrain announced the detention of six individuals on similar charges. The monarchy’s interior ministry urged the public “to refrain from circulating or re-posting unreliable videos or news to avoid legal accountability.”

“If governments [in the Gulf] begin arresting expatriates for sharing or discussing news during a conflict, it risks undermining the image they have tried to build as safe, modern international hubs,” Stirling stressed.

Israel has also stepped up censorship during the conflict, which it initiated together with Washington, forbidding live broadcasts showing city skylines during Iranian missile attacks, images identifying locations of strikes, and other content deemed to be a security threat.

“Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a Nation that has been totally decapitated,” he added.

US President Donald Trump has denied media reports of damage sustained by five US Air Force tanker aircraft at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine has become a party to the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran, senior Iranian MP Ebrahim Azizi has said, threatening potential retaliation against Kiev.

The head of the national security commission of the Iranian parliament took to X on Saturday, warning that Kiev’s decision to send anti-aircraft assets to the region to prop up the attackers gives Tehran the right to strike Ukraine in self-defense.

“By providing drone support to the Israeli regime, failed Ukraine has effectively become involved in the war and, under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, has turned its entire territory into a legitimate target for Iran,” Azizi wrote.

Over the past two weeks, Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly signaled his readiness to get involved in the war in the Middle East. He has claimed the US had asked Ukraine for help defend its Gulf allies against Iranian strikes on American assets stationed there, while other regional “partners” have purportedly reached out to Kiev as well.

Zelensky said he had given instructions to “provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists who can guarantee the necessary security.”

Gun Control’s Endgame: No Guns for Anyone

Gun control advocates do not just oppose civilian gun ownership; they also argue that guns in the hands of police make people less safe.

In January, a Border Patrol agent in Portland shot and wounded two Venezuelan nationals who belonged to the violent Tren de Aragua gang after they allegedly tried to run agents over with their vehicle. In response, Kris Brown, president of Brady United, tweeted the following:

“We don’t know the details behind the shootings of 2 people by a Border Patrol agent in Portland. But I know one thing for certain: whether in the hands of federal officers or everyday Americans, guns do not make us safer. Yet Trump is reshaping our country based on this lie.”

What were the Border Patrol agents supposed to do when an illegal alien with a criminal record tries to run over an agent? How are unarmed agents supposed to apprehend and detain violent gang members?

Currently on its website, Brady United explains: “Why Police violence is gun violence … As we work to tackle the gun violence epidemic in America, we cannot ignore police violence or its devastating effects.”

The same claim is made repeatedly by other gun control groups.

“Police violence is gun violence and that’s why our movement must be responsive as well,” declares Shannon Watts, president for Moms Demand Action.

“Police violence is gun violence,” proclaims Gabby Giffords, with the Giffords Law Center.

These last two statements are from 2021 and 2020, so their opposition to police having guns isn’t a new focus.

Gun control groups sometimes openly acknowledge their goal of banning all guns. In a 2023 interview with Time magazine, for example, Gabby Giffords – who heads the Giffords Law Center – answered a question about her goal by saying: “No more guns.” When the interviewer asked whether she meant no more gun violence, Giffords clarified: “No, no, no. Lord, no. Guns, guns, guns. No more guns. Gone.”

Time magazine itself treated the remark as significant enough to place Giffords’ line – “No more guns, Gone” – in the headline.

Her reason, she said, was to protest the dismissal of commissioner Carrie Prejean Boller, who was ousted last month after she used a hearing on antisemitism to expound on her objections to Israel and Zionism.

“In this country, people of faith are having their free expression stripped away, and even their lives put at risk, because of their deeply held beliefs about Palestine, all for the sake of a Zionist political agenda,” Munshi wrote in a resignation letter she posted to Substack. “The removal of a Catholic commissioner for expressing dissenting views grounded in her faith is the exact affront to free expression and religious liberty that I spoke out against.”

Munshi posted her resignation to X just before 10 p.m. Thursday, hours after an attacker drove a car into a Michigan synagogue while a preschool was in session. She did not mention the incident in her letter, which she said instead was timed to Prejean Boller’s formal ousting by Trump earlier that day.
