Videos and satellite images show Iran's drone army puncturing U.S. and allied defenses

An NBC News analysis of 30 videos and satellite images shows Iranian drones are presenting a new type of struggle for the U.S. and its allies.

3/14/26

The buzz came before the explosion. An aerial vehicle dove from the cloudless skytoward its target at Camp Buehring, a U.S. military base in Kuwait. It struck near a running track with a fiery plume of black smoke.

Oh s-t,” a man recording from the base said. “Oh my God. Oh, that was right here. They’re f-ing getting… They’re starting to dial into our building.”

The video ends as the smoke billows in the desert outpost.

The footage of this attack, posted online on March 1 but possibly filmed earlier,is one of over 30 open-source videos and satellite images verifiedby NBC News showingIranian drone strikes and interceptions by the U.S. and its allies across seven countries. Apparent targets include military bases, transportation hubs, energy infrastructure and diplomatic centers. In 21 of 26 videos, drones appear to reach their targets.

The videos, posted on various online platforms, reveal a pattern of inadequate protection for strategic locations targeted by the drones from the outset of the war. As the U.S. and Israel bombard Iran with the stated goal of crippling its nuclear, ballistic and drone capabilities, Iran retaliates by utilizing its arsenal of missiles and cheap exploding drones.

The drones are a novel challenge for the U.S., its allies and the countries caught in the crossfire. Adversaries will be watching America’s response closely.

The weapon’s versatility may allow Iran to prolong the war by straining enemy resources, a tactic attractive for cash-strapped states, experts say. Iran is a pioneer of the technology, which it sold to Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It has challenged the economics of warfare. While the U.S. remains firm in its air dominance, Iran’s drone campaign has forced the targeted countries to use expensive munitions for interceptions.

It’s kind of like the ultimate symbol of asymmetric warfare,” said Joe Dyke, director of programmes for Airwars, a nonprofit that tracks civilian harm in conflict zones.

While the drones can be shot down with a range of weapons including heavy machine guns, fighter jets and advanced interceptors, they can overwhelm air defenses and even one such aircraft can inflict deadly damage.

A drone strike killed six U.S. servicemembers at the civilian Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait. Video verified by NBC News shows that others have bombarded oil infrastructure and logistics hubs. Some drones have struck U.S. consulates and embassies across the Gulf states as passersby gasped and filmed the nosedives. An oil storage facility in Oman was hit twice: Once last week and again this week, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of crucial targets.

The U.S. does not release data on the munitions it intercepts or faces. Data from the United Arab Emirates, which has been heavily impacted by Iranian strikes, says that 1,475 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were fired at the country as of March 10 and 1,385 were intercepted.

Checkpoint attacks open new front in Iran war

Arash Sohrabi Mar 12, 2026 at 13:16 GMT

Updated: 14:36

The Iran war appears to be entering a new phase as attacks increasingly target checkpoints and street-level security units, while witness reports sent to Iran International suggest many of those positions are being moved or dismantled after their locations are exposed.

For days the conflict had focused largely on military bases, missile sites and command facilities, particularly in southern Iran,as part of the wider US-Israeli campaign that has struck thousands of targets across the countrysince the war began on February 28.

But since Wednesday evening, reporteddrone strikes on checkpoints in Tehran have pointed to a parallel line of pressure: the local security posts, patrol units and temporary deployments used to enforce control on the streets.

Iranian state-linked media said several checkpoints in Tehran were hit, killing members of the security forces and Basij militia. The reported locations included positions in multiple districts across the capital.

The development suggests the conflict is increasingly intersecting with the structures the state relies on to control neighborhoods rather than only its larger military infrastructure.

From fixed bases to moving checkpoints

Since the start of the war, residents across Iran say checkpoints and patrols havemultiplied in major cities as authorities attempt to prevent unrest and maintain control.

At the same time, Iran International has received a steady stream of messages from viewersdescribing the locations of checkpoints, security deployments and temporary bases.

Some reports describe armed units inspecting vehicles at major highway entrances or intersections. Others mentionsecurity forces using schools, sports halls and religious institutions as temporary accommodation or staging points.

Messages received in recent days pointed to deployments in locations ranging from major Tehran highways to entrances to cities such as Karaj, Shiraz, Mashhad and Qazvin. Residents alsodescribed units stationed beneath highway bridges, near parks or inside parking areas where buses and motorcycleswere parked overnight.

In several cases, viewers reported that checkpoints they had previously seen disappeared within hours or days, while others appeared to move to nearby streets or disperse into smaller patrol groups.

==Some messages described security forces sleeping inside buses or personal vehicles•• and conducting mobile patrols rather than remaining in fixed positions.

Others said checkpoints that had been inspecting vehicles were suddenly dismantled, leaving only a few officers nearby.

Such reports cannot be independently verified in each case. But taken together they suggest that many deployments are becoming more fluid, with positions shifting frequentlyrather than remaining in one place.

A war over control of the neighborhood

The shift reflects a deeper pressure on the state’s local enforcement network.

For years the Islamic Republic has relied on a dense web of Basij, police and Revolutionary Guards positions to control neighborhoods and quickly suppress unrest.

During the recent nationwide protests earlier this year, these same networks formed the backbone of the crackdown that sealed off districts and quashed the demonstrations.

In wartime, those local security units appear to be playing an even more central role.

As larger bases and installations come under pressure from airstrikes, authorities appear to be relying moreheavily on mobile checkpoints and temporary deployments to maintain control on the ground.

Now those fallback positions are also being drawn into the conflict.

The result is a battlefield that increasingly overlaps with everyday urban space. Instead of remaining confined to distant military facilities, the war is beginning to touch the street corners, highway entrances and neighborhood patrol routes where the state exerts day-to-day authority.

Cubans Storm Communist HQ.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED:Residents in central Cuba partially destroyed a local communist party headquarters during a protest over energy and food shortages.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: Cuban citizens, the Cuban government, and President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Saturday in Moron, a city in central Cuba.

💬KEY QUOTE:“Vandalism acts in Moron were directed at the building,” said Cuban government sources via state media.

🎯IMPACT: The incident highlights Cuba’s ongoing energy crisis, worsened by a lack of fuel shipments and U.S. sanctions.

IN FULL

A group of residents in Moron, central Cuba, protested early Saturday, targeting the local headquarters of the ruling communist party.

The demonstration, reportedly tied to the island’s energy and food supply issues, resulted in the partial destruction of the building, and five individuals were arrested.

Cuban authoritieslabeled the event as “vandalism acts,”stating that protesters threw stones and set fire to furniture in the building’s reception area.

Social media videos also revealed damage to a drugstore and a store in the area.

The Cuban government has opened an investigation into the incident amid the country’s ongoing severe energy shortages.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed on Friday that no petroleum shipments have arrived in Cuba for three months, attributing the crisis to a U.S. energy blockade.

He added that the country is currentlyrelying on a mix of natural gas, solar power, and thermoelectric plants.

The energy crisis has forced the shutdown of two power plants and limited operations at a solar park.

A recent blackout was blamed on a broken boiler at a thermoelectric plant, which caused a complete shutdown of Cuba’s power grid.

As Cuba grapples with these challenges, President Díaz-Canel noted that discussions are underway with the U.S. government, marking the first official acknowledgment of such talks amidst the ongoing crisis.

Iran-Backed Iraqi Militia Places Bounties on U.S. Officials.

PULSE POINTS

WHAT HAPPENED: The IslamicResistance in Iraq has announced bounties for information leading to the capture or “neutralization” of high-ranking U.S. military or intelligence officials.

👤WHO WAS INVOLVED: The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, U.S. military officials, and intelligence agencies operating in Iraq.

📍WHEN & WHERE: Announced via Telegram, targeting U.S. personnel in Iraq and the wider region.

💬KEY QUOTE: “This pressure affects personnelacross all disciplines—whether within the U.S. military or other intelligence and espionage agencies operating in Iraq and the wider region,” the group stated.

🎯IMPACT: The bounty offer represents asignificant escalation in threats against American forces and intelligence operations in the region.

IN FULL

An Iran-backed terror proxy in Iraq isoffering a bounty of 150 million Iraqi dinars for information(American dollars; $115,000) that could lead to the capture or “neutralization” of high-ranking U.S. military officials or senior intelligence leadership.

The bounties issued by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq were posted on Telegram.

“In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: The tightening of the noose around American forces on the ground has led to a curtailment of their security options,” the group stated, before continuing,“This pressure affects personnel across all disciplines—whether within the U.S. military or other intelligence and espionage agenciesoperating in Iraq and the wider region—compelling them to relocate to alternative (civilian) sites that they perceive as more secure.

“Accordingly, we hereby announce the allocation of a ‘substantial financial reward’ in exchange for providing information regarding these targets,” the Islamic Resistance in Iraq added.

Iranian-backed terror proxies have long targeted U.S. military and intelligence officials across the Middle East.

One of the most horrifying examples of this practice was the 1985 abduction, interrogation, torture, and murder of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) station chief in Beirut, William Francis Buckley, by Hezbollah and its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) handlers

Buckley was abducted by the Shia militia called Islamic Jihad—the predecessor to Hezbollah—in March 1984. He was held for an estimated 19 months before his execution. During that time, Buckley was subjected to gruesome torture, including what appears to have been the flaying of his skin while he was still alive. His body was later dumped along a road near the Beirut airport, covered in bandages and blood, while a catheter was also left embedded inside him.

I just remembered my parents, while watching this Shawn and guest shooting all these guns?

My mother in her youth was a sharp shooter with a 22 rifle, in her early teens. I wasn’t that impressed as a kid. But my mom was born in the 20’s, in New Hampshire and didn’t have much else to do, but helped my grandparents with 3 brothers and one sister, on the farm,so sharp shooting was their thing. She won awards in her little town, She kept that rifle as we grew up.

A nice memory about how tough the people were at that time. My Dad served in the Navy in the WWII starting in early 40’s. He grew up on a farm too, with my Greek Grandfather and Polish Grandmother, who were very young who came to the US.

My great grandmother sent my Grandfather at 16 to America to make sure he didn’t marry the hussy in the village. He knew no English and had no relatives in the US and he made an amazing life for us. At the time he had his will done he had bought massive property in New London County, in CT. No one knew how accomplished he was.

My Mom and my Dad had 10 children starting in the late 40’s.

Funny, I remembered that conservation I had with my mom in my teens in late 70s.

This is why I love America, they, especially the ones who grew up on farms were patriotic, courageous and hardly afraid of anything.

The Most Debated Mystery in Human History

In this Hot Question with defense tech founder Ethan Thornton, we dive into one of the most debated mysteries in human history—the pyramids, ancient civilizations, UFOs, and the possibility of alien life in the universe. Ethan breaks down whether the Great Pyramids could have realistically been built by humans, how massive stone structures might have been moved thousands of years ago, and why theories about advanced technology or extraterrestrial involvement continue to capture public imagination. The discussion expands into the Fermi Paradox, exploring why—despite billions of stars and a universe over 13 billion years old—we still haven’t definitively encountered alien civilizations. From ancient engineering to cosmic probability, this conversation examines the science, speculation, and unanswered questions surrounding aliens, UAPs, ancient technology, and humanity’s place in the universe.
