Pointing to comments Donald Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary for Bush Jr., made in 2003, at the start of the Iraq War.
"It could last, you know, six days, six weeks. I doubt six months," Rumsfeld said about the war, which lasted nearly nine years.
Based on reports surrounding the military action in early 2026, the Trump administration offered at least four to five different, often shifting, justifications or "excuses" for the war against Iran. These justifications ranged from imminent self-defense to long-term policy goals.
The varied justifications provided by President Trump and his officials include:
Preventing Nuclear Weapons: Claiming Iran was "in the throes of rebuilding" its nuclear capabilities, despite previously claiming to have "obliterated" them.
Destroying Ballistic Missiles: Stating the objective was to destroy Iran's missile production and capabilities.
Eliminating Imminent Threats: Arguing the strike was pre-emptive to stop planned Iranian attacks on U.S. forces (a claim that was disputed by intelligence reports).
Regime Change: Encouraging the Iranian people to "take over" their government, although officials later claimed it was "not a regime change war".
Failed Negotiations: Stating that the strikes were a result of failed diplomatic talks.
