Googlers revolt against Google's secret plan to offer censored search tools in China

Two days ago, a source leaked the existence of "Project Dragonfly", a super-secret Google plan to create a censored search-tool for use in China.

The Intercept's blockbuster scoop on the project caught Google's management flatfooted, with many of the key people involved off on summer holidays.

This has left a vacuum in which Google's most outspoken, ethically conscious employees have been able to seize control over the internal discussion. Google's most senior management were recently forced to abandon billions in future Pentagon AI projects when Googlers rose up against "Project Maven," the pilot program for this work.

“Everyone’s access to documents got turned off, and is being turned on [on a] document-by-document basis,” said one source. “There’s been total radio silence from leadership, which is making a lot of people upset and scared. … Our internal meme site and Google Plus are full of talk, and people are a.n.g.r.y.”

On a message board forum for Google employees, one staff member posted a link to The Intercept’s story alongside a note saying that they and two other members of their team had been asked to work on the Chinese censorship project, code-named Dragonfly.

“In my opinion it is just as bad as the leak mentions,” the employee wrote, adding that they had asked their manager to be removed from the project because they were uncomfortable with it. Another member of the team, the employee said, had decided to quit Google in large part due to concerns about Dragonfly.

“I had a meeting with my [vice president] about the project before leaving [it]. This was a short meeting for me, because my [vice president] refused to provide any information without me basically agreeing to a verbal [nondisclosure agreement],” noted the employee. “She did reemphasize that they had good reasons to keep all that private: they didn’t want the project to leak externally! That was enough for me to fuck off [from the group working on Dragonfly].”

Protesters Tried To Blockade A Colorado ICE Facility, Then SWAT Showed Up

A group of protesters in Colorado were arrested Thursday after blocking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials from entering or leaving its facility in Centennial.

The demonstrators had been camped out at the ICE field offices since the previous Sunday when a handful of the protesters stepped up opposition by causing a blockage, reported The Denver Post. The group formed a human chain by linking arms and grabbing pipes and tubes.

The SWAT team arrived in riot gear roughly four hours after the blockade began, according to Westword. Protesters were asked to disperse or face arrest. Eight protesters were ultimately arrested for not complying. (RELATED: Democrats Slam ICE For ‘Morally Reprehensible’ Phone Call Policy)

The crowd has been protesting the government agency over its compliance with President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy and demanding ICE be abolished.

“The reality is that ICE’s job is to separate families,” said Jordan Garcia, the protest’s organizing director. “They’re in the business of deportation, in the business of taking fathers and mothers away from their children.”

House Democrats recently introduced legislation to abolish ICE, however, when House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy agreed to bring the bill to a vote, Democrats reneged and disclosed they would vote no.

Dark night in Cambodia fuels ex Aussie cop's mission to halt child sex trade

Former Victorian policeman Glen Hulley won't ever forget the night evil quietly brushed up against up him and tapped him on the shoulder. The experience changed him immediately, and dramatically altered the direction of his life.

In 2013 Hulley was travelling through Southeast Asia while he recuperated from an injury he had suffered while training for Australia’s national karate team. Inside a bar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's bustling capital city of 1.5 million people, Hulley was approached by a local man. The man, a tuk tuk driver, asked Hulley, then 37, if he wanted to hire a prostitute for the night.

When Hulley declined, the determined Cambodian pitched him another deal - this time a much younger girl. "It was clear a child was being offered," Hulley tells Nine.com.au. "That shocked me."

Hulley wanted to find out where the child was located, so he told the driver to take him there. "It probably wasn't the wisest thing to do," Hulley recalls.

But after 13 years with the Victorian police, including undercover investigative work, Hulley’s instinct pushed him on towards the unknown. The pair exited the bar and, with Hulley in the back of the noisy tuk tuk, the two men sped through the busy night time Phnom Penh streets. Eventually the tuk tuk pulled up outside a house, and Hulley was led inside.

Hulley chokes up momentarily, before he composes himself. "One of the hardest things was to walk away," he says.

Hulley made the decision to leave and he took the team's evidence to police. It took police a further three weeks to gather more evidence and obtain an arrest warrant.

"It was one of the hardest three weeks I've ever had," he says. "I got very little sleep knowing every night those children were there waiting to be rescued and we couldn't do anything about it."

When Indonesian police swooped on the brothel the girls were freed and the mamasan who ran the sex slave ring was arrested and jailed for seven years.

'CHILD RAPE HOLIDAYS'

Since setting up Project Karma, Hulley has learned that, however painful, it is sometimes necessary to play the long game.

It was Hulley who set in motion a chain of events that led to Australia's federal government passing laws to stop convicted Aussie pedophiles travelling abroad. The legislation, which last May moved through Canberra at lightning speed, was championed by Senate crossbencher Derryn Hinch.

Hinch had cleverly come up with the explosive phrase "child rape holidays" to illustrate how it appeared too easy for Australian pedophiles to travel into Southeast Asia. The Victorian senator had taken up the cause with great vigour, following a meeting with Hulley in late 2015. Hinch would later describe that brief encounter with Hulley as "the most disturbing coffee break of my life".

What Hulley had told Hinch was how convicted Australian pedophiles were boarding low-cost flights and travelling freely into Asian countries to take advantage of impoverished children. He described how fixers, just like the tuk tuk driver in Phnom Penh, would offer up young boys and girls for less than the price of a movie ticket.

Cory Booker Pictured With Anti-Israel Radicals, Holds Sign Calling for Elimination of Security Borders in Israel

UPDATE: Booker claims he didn't read sign, didn't know it was about Israel

New Jersey senator Cory Booker (D.) was pictured on Friday afternoon at the liberal Netroots Nation conference holding a sign calling for the removal of security borders in Israel, a policy proposal from a radical anti-Israel group with financial ties to terrorist groups.

Booker, standing next to radical activists from the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, is holding a sign that says, "From Palestine to Mexico, all the walls have got to go," a slogan used by the group in its call for the removal of Israeli security barriers used to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks.
