President Donald Trump on Mondaycriticized some of the United States’ allies for not heeding his calls to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed due to Iranian missile and drone attacks.

"Numerous countries have told me they're on the way. Some are very enthusiastic about it, and some are in. Some are countries that we've helped for many, many years. We've protected them from horrible outside sources, and they weren't that enthusiastic," he said in a news conference in Washington DC.

"The level enthusiasm matters to me.We have some countries where we have 45,000 soldiers, great soldiers, protecting them from harm's way, and we have done a great job. And well, we want to know, do you have any mine sweepers? Well, would rather not get involved, sir."

"For 40 years, we're protecting you, and you don't want to get involved in something that is very minor, very few shots going to be taken… But they said, we'd rather not get involved."

Two charged in killing of Iranian-Canadian dissident Masood Masjoody

Two people have been charged with first-degree murder in connectionwith the death of Masood Masjoody, a former instructor at Simon Fraser University and an outspoken critic of the Islamic Republic, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said.

The charges were laid Friday against Mehdi Ahmadzadeh Razavi, 48, of Maple Ridge, and Arezou Soltani, 45, of North Vancouver. Both are accused in the killing of Masjoody, 45, who was reported missing last month.

Masjoody was first reported missing on February 2. According to the Canadian police, Burnaby Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began investigating after neighbors raised concerns about his sudden disappearance. Officers soon determined that the circumstances were unusual and suggested possible criminal activity.

The case was later transferred to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which worked alongside Burnaby RCMP and several specialized units as the investigation expanded.

On March 6, investigators located Masjoody’s remains in Mission, British Columbia.

Authorities say the victim and the two accused were known to each other, though the motive for the killing has not yet been determined.

Social media posts indicate Masjoody had a history of activism related to events in Iran. IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said last month that investigators were examining whether his disappearance could be connected to that activism.

Masjoody was known for his online presence and commentary on Iranian politics. Members of the Iranian-Canadian community say he had spoken out against individuals he believed were linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Masjoody made allegations about individuals he believed had ties to Iranian security institutions. In online posts, he alleged that Colonel Alireza Soltani — the incumbent IRGC commander in the Maku Free Trade Zone in northwestern Iran — is the uncle of one of the accused, Arezou Soltani.

He also alleged that her father, Ataollah Soltani, is a retired member of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Committees and previously served as commander of a committee outpost in the village of Khalakhaleh in Maku County.

Those claims have not been independently verified by investigators, and police have not indicated whether they are connected to the homicide investigation.

Police say further details about the case will be provided during a media update scheduled for Saturday afternoon in British Columbia.

“We understand this case has impacted the Iranian community and has generated widespread concern and public interest,” Fong said in a news release.

“While the motive is still under investigation, we can say the victim and two accused were known to each other.”

Shortly after his disappearance, Iranian-Canadian activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam posted to X that Masjoody had been “under threat for months” after attempting to expose alleged IRGC affiliates in Canada.

Masjoody was also known in academic circles as a mathematician who had previously worked as an instructor.

Investigators say the approval of first-degree murder charges marks a significant milestone in the case.

NEW DELHI, March 16 (Reuters) -Iran has asked India to release three tankers seized in Februaryas part of talks seeking the safe passage of Indian‑flagged or India‑bound vessels out of the Gulf via ‌the Strait of Hormuz, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Indian authorities seized the three Iran‑linked tankers near ‌Indian watersalleging they had concealed or altered their identities and were involved in illegal ship‑to‑ship transfers at sea.

Tehran has alsosought supplies of certain medicines and medical equipment, ​according to one of the sources, an Iranian official.

Iran’s ambassador to New Delhi met Indian foreign ministry officials on Monday to discuss the issue, the source said.

The sources declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.

India's foreign ministry, the Iranian embassy in New Delhi, and Iran's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Iran recently allowed two Indian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers to pass through the strait, ‌according to Indian officials, and one of them ⁠returned to western India on Monday. Traffic has ground to a near standstill on either side of the strait since the beginning of the war in Iran.

Asked about negotiations to ensure passage for Indian vessels, foreign ⁠ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Mondaythat recent movements reflected a "history of engagement, of dealing with each other".

He told a daily news briefing that nothing was being exchanged.

Since the start of U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February, Tehran has responded with attacks across the region including on ​ships ​attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz,killing three Indian sailors and leaving ​one missing.

India said on Monday that at least 22 ‌Indian-flagged vessels and 611 Indian seafarers remained in the Gulf.

An Indian source said six of the vessels were loaded with LPG and the country was keen for their passage first to ease a shortage of the cooking fuel.About 90% of India's total LPG imports come from the Gulf.

Romania rules out involvement in Mideast conflict amid Iran warning

BUCHAREST, March 16 (Xinhua) –

Romania's Foreign Ministry said Monday that the country is not involved in the conflict in the Middle East,after Iran warned Bucharest over the possible use of Romanian bases by the United States.

"Romania is not part of the conflict. Our priority is diplomatic efforts for de-escalation," the ministry said in a statement.

U.S. access to Romanian military bases is regulated by a bilateral agreementsigned in 2006 and the missile defense system hosted in Romania is strictly defensive, the statement added.

Earlier on Monday,Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warned Romania not to allow the United States to use bases on its territory for operations against Iran.

The Islamic government in Tehran warned Romania that providing bases to the US airforceamounts to participation in the attacks against it, according to a series of statements offered on Monday, March 16, by a spokesman of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The spokesman argued that Romania's support for the US “would incur international responsibility if implemented,” according to the Iran International television, which broadcasts from the United Kingdom in Persian.

"If Romania makes its bases available to the United States, it would amount to participation in military aggressionagainst Iran," said Iranian official Esmaeil Baghaei in a video conference.

He said such amove would be unacceptable under international lawand would carry international responsibility for Romania.

The first three KC-135 Stratotanker-type planes arrived in Bucharest on Sunday, March 15,along with a contingent of US soldiers.

The arrival was announced by Romanian defense minister Radu Miruță,who said that the planes carried no weapons or explosives on board and that Parliament had limited their number.

Last week, the Romanian Parliamentapproved the deployment of non-kinetic (non-offensive) American troops and military equipment in Romaniaat the proposal of the Supreme Council of National Defense. Romanian president Nicușor Dan emphasized that this equipment is strictly defensive and will be deployed within the framework of the strategic partnership.
