Armor-Piercing Ammo Metal Up 557% As China Chokes Supply, War Demand Surges

Tungsten, used in missiles, tank rounds, armor-piercing ammunition, and some smaller-caliber munitions, has surged in price over the last year as China curbed exports and global supplies tightened.

This is a major concern, as multi-front conflicts - from the Middle East to Eastern Europe - are depleting interceptor missile supplies.

Bloomberg cites new data from commodity price reporting agency Fastmarkets showing tungsten prices have surged to $2,250 per metric ton this month, up 557% since Beijing added certain tungsten products to its export control list in February of last year.

"In my 12 years working across the commodity space and dealing with a lot of weird and wonderful metals, I have never seen a market as tight as tungsten is right now, aside from maybe lithium in 2021," George Heppel, vice president of commodity research, told Bloomberg.

He warned, "This isn't like lithium, where there was a huge pipeline of projects that could come online."

The problem with rare earth metals is that China dominates the global market. It controls roughly 79% of global tungsten mined output, which Western companies rely on heavily.

According to Project Blue, a London-based commodity research firm, manufacturers have been searching for alternative supplies since China significantly tightened export controls last year. Chinese shipments of restricted tungsten products were down about 40% last year, the firm said.

The tungsten squeeze highlights why the Trump administration has been furiously rewriting global supply chains away from China, especially with the push to build out domestic rare earth supply chains critical for the military and semiconductor industries.

"The industrial base is desperate for material," said Almonty Industries CEO Lewis Black, whose firm is set to begin commercial production at the site of an idled mine in South Korea and is seeking to develop the first U.S. tungsten mine in a decade.

Report: Germany secretly funded Israel’s nuclear weapons program

A new investigation claims that West Germany quietly financed Israel’s nuclear program, funneling the equivalent of around $5.7 billion into the project between 1961 and 1973.

The money allegedly helped build and expand the Dimona facility in the Negev desert, widely believed to be the core of Israel’s undeclared nuclear arsenal.

The reactor itself was originally developed with French assistance in the late 1950s, but Israeli leaders David Ben-Gurion and Shimon Peres reportedly secured additional funding through secret arrangements with West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

To keep the operation hidden, the funds were disguised as “Negev development” loans and routed through a Frankfurt state bank, officially recorded as aid to unnamed developing countries.

Secrecy served both sides. Israel feared domestic backlash over open cooperation with Germany so soon after World War II, while West Germany feared angering the Arab world and strengthening East Germany diplomatically.

According to the report, a 1989 repayment agreement effectively turned the loan into a grant, meaning the money was never truly repaid.

Bank of America settles lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein accusers, scuttling Leon Black deposition

Bank of America settled a proposed class-action lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein accusers who alleged the bank facilitated the now-dead pedophile's sex-trafficking operation, court records show.

Lawyers for the bank and a group of Epstein accusers told the judge overseeing the case during a pretrial conference last week that they "reached a settlement in principle," according to a Monday update to the case's docket.

The terms of the settlement were not made public.

US District Judge Jed Rakoff, who is overseeing the case, gave a March 27 deadline for the parties to file public documents laying out the settlement's terms, and an April 2 hearing to decide whether to approve them.

"The women entrapped and abused by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell started a monumental reckoning with their brave voices and fearlessness," Sigrid McCawley, an attorney at Boies Schiller Flexner representing the Epstein accusers, said in a comment. "The road to justice for these women has been long and trying. Today's resolution of the case against Bank of America is one more step on the road to much deserved justice."

A representative for Bank of America declined to comment. In previous public statements and court filings, the bank denied wrongdoing.

The settlement scuttles a scheduled deposition for Leon Black, the billionaire ex-CEO of Apollo Global Management, which was set for March 26.

The accusers' lawsuit had alleged that Black's more than $150 million in transfers to Epstein — which Black has said was for financial and estate-planning services — facilitated Epstein's sex-trafficking. Bank of America should have paid closer attention to Black's accounts and any transactions related to Epstein, the lawsuit said.

Black has separately been asked to testify before the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating Epstein, on May 13.

JPMorgan agreed to pay $290 million, and Deutsche Bank agreed to a $75 million payout, to settle similar lawsuits brought by the same group of lawyers representing Epstein victims.

Rakoff previously tossed a parallel lawsuit the attorneys brought against BNY — formerly Bank of New York Mellon Corp. — but allowed portions of the case against Bank of America to move forward.

In an earlier court hearing, Rakoff said he would be disappointed if the cases against BNY and Bank of America didn't go to trial.

"I don't want to discourage you from settling," the judge said. "There are some of my colleagues that think settling is always the way to go. But I'm much more selfish and I would love to see two very good trials."

Some Russian users have described the platform is barely functioning "in any form". They complain the app won't open, messages won't send, and neither will photos and videos load.

Tech analysts say the disruption looks less like a technical glitch and more like the targeted throttling of Russia's most popular messaging service and social media site, with an estimated 90 million users.

Prior reported efforts of the Russian government to restrict Telegram, particularly in 2018 and 2020, failed given that users as well as the company were repeatedly successful in bypassing Kremlin measures.
