Lions and Iran
Asiatic lions once roamed widely across the Middle East, including regions such as Mesopotamia, Iran (especially Khuzestan and Fars provinces), Iraq, Turkey, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Historical records and ancient texts, including the Bible, reference lions in the region, with the last known lion in Palestine killed in the 14th century. By the 19th century, populations were declining due to habitat loss, hunting, and human encroachment. The last lion in Iran was sighted in 1942, and the species was declared extinct in the Middle East by the early 20th century.
