Jury finds Elon Musk guilty of misleading investors

The world richest man could end up paying up to $2.6 billion in damages, the plaintiffs’ attorneys have said

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been found guilty in California of misleading investors during his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in 2022.

The class-action lawsuit, which had been filed shortly before Musk took control of the social media platform that he subsequently re-branded as X, focused on two tweets and comments made by the tech billionaire during a podcast in May 2022. Following those statements, including a post claiming that the Twitter deal was “temporarily on hold,” the company’s shares plunged by almost 10% in a single session.

The nine-man jury in San Francisco delivered its verdict on Friday, stating that the tech billionaire did mislead the shareholders, who sold Twitter shares at a lower price as a result of his announcements, with the tweets.

However, it also found that there was nothing wrong with what Musk said on the podcast and that he did not intentionally “scheme” to mislead the investors.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO could end up paying up to $2.6 billion in damages, according to the lawyers of the Twitter shareholders. Musk’s fortune is estimated at some $814 billion.

The verdict is “an important victory, not just for investors of Twitter, but for the public markets” that “sends a strong message that just because you’re a rich and powerful person, you still have to obey the law,” Mark Molumphy, an attorney for the plaintiffs, insisted.

Musk’s lawyers said that they will appeal the ruling. “We view today’s verdict, where the jury found both for and against the plaintiffs and found no fraud scheme, as a bump in the road,” the legal team at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan said in a statement.

Musk, who is an extremely active user of X, has not yet commented on the jury’s decision.

An explosion in Bahrain on March 9 was likely caused by a US Patriot interceptor missile, according to an analysis by academic researchers examined by Reuters.

The war on Iran can go on since there’s “plenty of money to fund [it],” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has claimed. However, Washington needs more money to continue bombing, he added.

The Pentagon has requested $200 billion in additional funding for the Iran war, the Associated Press said earlier, citing sources. However, it faces stiff opposition in Congress, with Democrats and even some Republicans questioning the need after large defense appropriations last year.

Bessent defended the request without confirming the amount. He also dismissed a question about possible tax increases as “ridiculous” and said that was “not at all” under consideration.

Early indications suggest that the war will be the most expensive for the US since the long conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The first six days of the Iran war cost more than $11 billion, according to media estimates.

As much as these service members and their families are victims of Iran’s justified retaliation for a surprise attack perpetrated amid ongoing negotiations, they’re victims of a betrayal perpetrated by their president and the joint chiefs of staff, who cast them into an unconstitutional war of aggression, packaged in lies and initiated to advance the agenda of a foreign government, while undermining the security of their own country.

Of course, US casualties comprise a small subset of the total bloodshed. In executing this unjust war, Americans have collectively inflicted far more death and dismemberment than they’ve endured, teaming up with their Israeli counterparts to kill more than 3,000 Iranians, including some 150 schoolgirls — mostly between age 7 and 12 — whose school was destroyed by Tomahawk cruise missiles at the war’s very start.

Though it should have already been apparent, Operation Epic Fury should make clear that — service members’ good intentions aside — combat waged under the US flag rarely has anything to do with American security. ‘Roblox’ Programmer Faces 40 Child Porn Charges.

Jamie Borne, a 30-year-old probationer, was arrested in New Orleans after probation officers discovered a child-sized sex doll and electronic devices suspected of containing child sexual abuse material during a routine visit to his home. Borne, who identified himself as a programmer for the Roblox gaming platform, was serving probation for a 2023 conviction involving smoke grenades and a firearm.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill confirmed that ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Louisiana State Police were involved in the arrest. During the visit on February 26, probation officers reportedly found the child-sized sex doll in Borne’s bedroom, along with child clothing, condoms, and electronic devices believed to contain material related to children under 13 years old.

Borne was booked on 40 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material and one count of possession, trafficking, or importing a child sex doll. He is being held on a bond of $50,000 per count. Louisiana state law stipulates severe penalties for these offenses, including hard labor sentences of up to 20 years without parole for possession of child sexual abuse material and additional penalties for trafficking or importing child sex dolls.

Roblox, the gaming platform where Borne worked, has faced scrutiny in recent years for its lack of age restrictions and alleged facilitation of predatory behavior. According to Louisiana Attorney General Murrill, Roblox allows access to millions of games, including some that allegedly feature explicit content. Murrill has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, citing its failure to implement proper safeguards for minors.

The platform reportedly has 151.5 million daily users, with a significant portion being minors. Twenty percent of the user base is under nine years old, and another 20 percent falls between the ages of nine and twelve.
