Iran to Mine Sea Lanes in Persian Gulf in Case of Attack - Defense Council

TEHRAN (Sputnik) - Tehran will mine all sea lanes in the Persian Gulf in the event of an attack on the coast of the country or islands, the Iranian Defense Council said on Monday.

"We remind you that in the event of any attempt by the enemy to attack the coast or islands of Iran, all sea lanes in the Persian Gulf, as well as the coast, will be mined," the council said in a statement, as quoted by the Fars news agency.

The passage through the Strait of Hormuz is possible only for countries that are not hostile to Iran, if this issue is coordinated with Tehran, the statement added.

The United States sees no alternative to conducting a ground military operation to capture Iran's Kharg Island and is accelerating troop deployments to the region, Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported earlier, citing sources familiar with the matter.

A US official told the newspaper that "the US military has accelerated the deployment of thousands of Marines and Navy personnel to the Middle East."

On March 22, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that all options remained on the table and did not rule out the possibility of sending US troops to the Iranian island.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.

Defeat in the Making? What Lies Ahead If US Targets Iran’s Kharg Island

The US war unleashed on Iran was an “amateurish and ill planned operation that threatens the global economy and security,” Mikael Valtersson, former Swedish Armed Forces and air defense officer, tells Sputnik.

The agression against Iran is the direct outcome of “major US intelligence and planning failures,” Mikael Valtersson notes.

The Kharg island assault that is reportedly being considered is a “rushed attempt to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.”

“An amphibious landing on Kharg island is a high-risk operation and to be sure that it will succeed ought to involve a vastly superior force that can take heavy casualties during a prolonged period of time. Otherwise, the operation might result in a clear US defeat,” underscores the expert.

❌ Why would US ground assault on Kharg Island be a strategic fiasco?

A US landing on Kharg Island would make it a prime target for Iran’s Khalij-e Fars supersonic anti-ship missiles and swarms of Ababil and Shahed drones, Andrey Chuprygin, senior lecturer at the Faculty of… pic.twitter.com/OOAnlckKKU

— Sputnik (@SputnikInt) March 15, 2026

Defenders' Edge & US Vulnerabilities

Iran retains strong means to inflict damage on an attacking adversary, especially in the vulnerable final assault phase, the pundit points out.

“Even lighter forms of anti-ship or anti-air missiles, that are hard to spot, can be used against landing crafts or transport helicopters,” he notes.

US forces would first need to clear mines from the approach waters — but those specialized vessels would themselves become prime targets.

Iran's troop strength on the island is unknown, but likely exceeds a single Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)

A successful landing would demand multiple reinforcing MEUs ready to absorb heavy initial losses

The amphibious ships themselves must operate close to shore, making them high-value targets

The loss of even a helicopter carrier (LPH) “would be a tremendous blow to the US image as an invincible military power, speculates the analyst.

Limited Close Support & Strategic Risks

US air power excels against large strategic targets but struggles to neutralize small, mobile Iranian units armed with anti-ship missiles and surface-to-air missiles, explains Valtersson.

Traditional helicopter close air support is too dangerous, while drones offer partial replacement but face range limits until a secure foothold exists.

“Presently, the US Armed Forces don't have enough forces in place or on their way to ensure victory,” says the analyst.

IRGC warns US: Any threat will be met with proportional, deterring response

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has issued a stern warning to the United States, emphasizing that any threat to Iran would be met with a proportional and deterring response.

In a statement on Monday, the IRGC addressed recent claims by US President Donald Trump, who had alleged that the Corps intended to target regional desalination plants and disrupt services to local populations.

"First, it is the aggressive and inhumane American army that started this war by killing children, sacrificing 180 elementary school children, and has so far targeted five water infrastructure sites, including the Qeshm Island desalination plant," the statement read.

It was referring respectively to a massacre targeting a school in the southern Iranian city of Minab on February 28, when the US and the Israeli regime began their latest bout of unprovoked aggression against Iran, and a subsequent attack on a southern Iranian island during the aggression.

"The IRGC has not carried out such actions," it added.

The statement also mentioned some other atrocities that have been carried out by the allies, which have been met with self-restraint on the part of the IRGC.

"You struck our hospitals. We did not retaliate. You struck our relief centers. We did not retaliate. You struck our schools. We did not retaliate."

It went on to address Trump's threat of targeting Iran's power generation facilities, pledging certain retaliation.

"But if you strike the electricity [supply chain], we will strike [your] electricity [supply chain]."

The Corps again referenced Trump's accusations against it of intending to challenge provision of essential services to regional nations, saying the Islamic Republic's reprisal would be targeting power plants serving US bases as well as economic, industrial, and energy sites linked to American interests.

https://x.com/PressTV/status/2035644406124929447

The statement concluded with a firm declaration of capability and resolve, noting, "We are determined to respond to every threat on the same level that would create deterrence in the balance, and we will carry this out."

"The United States does not know our capabilities; they will witness them on the battlefield."

So far, the IRGC has struck numerous highly sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region as part of its ongoing retaliatory Operation True Promise 4.

Israel Thought It Could Spur Rebellion Inside Iran. That Hasn’t Happened.

President Trump’s hopes that an Israeli plan to ignite an internal uprising against Iran’s theocratic government could bring the war to a swift end have so far been dashed.

As the United States and Israel prepared to go to war with Iran, the head of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, went to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a plan.

Within days of the war’s beginning, said David Barnea, the Mossad chief, his service would likely be able to galvanize the Iranian opposition — igniting riots and other acts of rebellion that could even lead to the collapse of Iran’s government. Mr. Barnea also presented the proposal to senior Trump administration officials during a visit to Washington in mid-January.

Mr. Netanyahu adopted the plan. Despite doubts about its viability among senior American officials and some officials in other Israeli intelligence agencies, both he and President Trump seemed to embrace an optimistic outlook. Killing Iran’s leaders at the outset of the conflict, followed by a series of intelligence operations intended to encourage regime change, they thought, could lead to a mass uprising that might bring about a swift end to the war.

“Take over your government: It will be yours to take,” Mr. Trump told Iranians in his initial address at the war’s start, after saying they should first seek shelter from the bombing.

Three weeks into the war, an Iranian uprising has not yet materialized. American and Israeli intelligence assessments have concluded that the theocratic Iranian government is weakened but intact, and that widespread fear of Iran’s military and police forces has dampened prospects both for nascent rebellion in the country and for ethnic militias outside of Iran to launch cross-border incursions.

Military Action Against Iran Bring People Together Around Its Leadership - Kremlin

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Military actions against Iran have led to greater unity of the Iranian people around the country's leadership, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"We see that, unfortunately, the war is spreading. We all know that at the start of this campaign - this aggression - the goal was, after all, to bring about regime change in Tehran. But one thing is now clear - every action like this only serves to unite the Iranian people more closely around their leadership," Peskov told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in an interview out on Sunday.

No sensible person would attempt to predict how the situation in the Middle East will unfold, but it is clear that nothing good is happening there, the spokesman added.

The assassinations of Iranian leaders will have far-reaching consequences, Peskov also said.

"This is indeed the reality we live in, but let's hope it's not the norm. In any case, it's an abnormal situation that has - and will continue to have - very profound consequences. It cannot fail to have consequences," Peskov told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in the interview out on Sunday.

The Kremlin spokesman has previously said that Russia strongly condemns any actions aimed at harming the health of members of the leadership of sovereign Iran, let alone their murder.

On Relations With Europe

The issue of paying bills for gas, gasoline, and electricity has eclipsed Ukraine as the primary focus for European states, Peskov said.

"They [Europeans] now have their number one priority not Ukraine, but how to settle bills for gas, gasoline, and electricity," Peskov told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin.

Europe is facing a difficult situation yet refuses dialogue with Russia, preferring to prolong the Ukraine conflict without means to fund it, Peskov said.

"Europe is torn apart by contradictions. Europe is in a difficult situation. Europe still does not want to talk to us. Europe still wants the continuation of the war in Ukraine and does not know how to pay for it," Peskov told Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin in the interview out on Sunday.

Russia does not refer to European countries with obscene language, Peskov said, recalling the remark of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill that diplomacy is "the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip."

“Even the best-case scenario for energy markets is disastrous…Whatever happens, high prices will outlive the Iran war”

“To almost everyone else it is clear that America entered this war with a flawed strategy, starting with its failure to anticipate that Iran would close the strait…With the fighting entering a fourth week, Mr Trump has four options for how to proceed…He can talk, leave, continue or escalate…If he has not yet chosen one, it is because none of them are good”.

Global Market Losing 11Mln Barrels of Oil Per Day Due to Middle East Conflict – IEA Chief

JAKARTA (Sputnik) - The world risks facing the most serious energy crisis in decades amid the conflict in the Middle East, with the market losing 11 million barrels of oil per day, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, said on Monday.

"Many of us remember the two consecutive oil crises in the 1970s … And at that time in each of the crises the world has lost about 5 million barrels per day. Both of them together 10 million barrels per day … And today, only as of today, we lost 11 million barrels per day, so more than two major oil shocks put together," Birol said at the National Press Club of Australia.

The IEA chief said the situation is very serious and noted that the agency is consulting with governments in Asia and Europe on the possibility of releasing additional oil from strategic reserves.

On March 11, IEA member countries agreed to release a record 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves to curb price increases.

Birol said that the decision on new interventions would be based on market conditions and is not tied to a specific price level. He said that a key factor in stabilizing the situation is ensuring the uninterrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil supplies passes.

According to the IEA’s forecast, global oil demand in 2026 will reach 104.77 million barrels per day, while OPEC expects consumption to reach 106.53 million barrels per day.

US Change of Heart on Strikes Against Iranian Power Plants Marks 'Strategic Defeat' - Expert

The US has announced it is delaying power plant strikes after US-Iran talks – but Iran denies any negotiations took place.

"Delaying the 48-hour ultimatum [Washington] gave Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic defeat," global energy expert Dr. Mamdouh G. Salameh tells Sputnik, casting doubt on Washington's narrative regarding the alleged negotiations.

The expert outlines three possible explanations:

It's an attempt to find a way to disengage from the war and declare victory

Alternatively, it could be a ploy to dupe Iran until the US Marines are in place to try to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by force, but it is doomed, the pundit warns

Third version: the US apparently wants to save Israel’s Dimona nuclear center from destruction

The US claimed on March 21 it would “obliterate” Iran’s power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz was reopened within 48 hours — a threat Iran says would be met with retaliation against critical infrastructure in Israel and the Gulf.

Shifting Oil Prices

Brent crude plunged nearly 14% to $96 a barrel shortly after the announcement of the US-Iran talks

It surged again above $100 following the Iranian Foreign Ministry's denial of holding talks with the US

The US is either trying to trick Iran, or influence rising oil prices, or both, Salameh believes.
