‘This is huge’: US Ambassador Grenell quietly blocks $400 million transfer from Germany to Iran

A transfer of nearly $400 million in cash to Iran has been blocked by Germany’s central bank in what appears to be a response to efforts by the U.S. ambassador to Germany.

Last month, Ambassador Richard Grenell urged Berlin to prevent Iran’s withdrawal of large sums of cash from German bank accounts in an effort to offset U.S. sanctions that took effect following Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

“We encourage the highest levels of the German government to intervene and stop the plan,” Grenell said, according to Reuters.

Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany’s powerful central bank, announced a new financial policy that would effectively bar the transfer of funds to Iran.

A member of the European System of Central Banks, Deutsche Bundesbank is a powerful influence within the European Union.

Grenell reportedly urged the German government to block the cash payment to Iran and it remains to be seen if the Merkel administration will undermine U.S. efforts and allow the $400 million in cash to be sent to Iran.

Iran is trying to bring home terror cash from Germany, but Angela Merkel may stop them

If Germany comes through and prevents Iran from acquiring nearly $400 million in U.S.-currency reserves held on its territory, Chancellor Angela Merkel will deserve a thank-you tweet from President Trump.

As Benjamin Weinthal reports, U.S. officials have been pressing the German government to prevent Iran from transporting its U.S. foreign currency reserves out of a German bank via cargo flight. Iran wants to take that action now so as to avoid the money being detained under looming U.S. sanctions. But U.S. officials are cautiously optimistic that Germany will put a stop to Iran's ambitions. U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell told me that "We are pleased to see the necessary technical changes to the financial systems in order to stop cash payments into Iran. We know Iran is increasing their activities throughout Europe, and so we must be vigilant."

But if Merkel does follow through here, it will be of real benefit to the U.S. and to the broader cause of humanitarian stability.
