Almost 400 Ukrainian drones downed over Russia in single night – MOD

updated 25 Mar, 2026 09:10

A total of 389 Ukrainian drones have been shot down by air defenses over Russian territory overnight, the Defense Ministry in Moscow reported on Wednesday morning.

Incoming UAVs were intercepted and destroyed across 14 regions in the western part of the country, as well as Crimea.

Moscow, which has been the focus of the majority of Ukrainian drone incursions in recent months, was largely untargeted this time, with Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reporting just one interception.

However, an unusually large number of UAVs were shot down in Leningrad Region, surrounding Russia’s second largest city, St Petersburg. Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said at least 56 drones were destroyed.

The raid resulted in a blaze in the port area of Ust-Luga, Drozdenko wrote on Telegram. The roof of a residential building was also been damaged in the city of Vyborg, he added.

There were no injuries among civilians in the region, according to the governor.

St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport was also forced to temporarily halt flights due to the drone incursions.

In Bryansk Region, which borders Ukraine, the number of intercepted UAVs reached 113, Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said.

Ukrainian drone raids on Russia have intensified since mid-March, with Kiev deploying hundreds of fixed-wing UAVs on a daily basis, targeting critical infrastructure, manufacturing facilities, and residential areas.

Russian have officials described the aerial incursions as desperate “terrorist attacks” meant to compensate for the setbacks Kiev’s military has been suffering on the battlefield.

Moscow has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own, targeting dual-use infrastructure, including power grid facilities and military sites in Ukraine with missiles and drones. Russia maintains that it never targets purely civilian sites.

Ukrainian Drone Strikes Halt at Least 40% of Russia’s Oil Export Capacity – Reuters

March 25, 2026

Ukrainian drone attacks have knocked out about 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity, disrupting shipments from major Baltic and Black Sea ports, Reuters reported Wednesday.

The shutdown, which Reuters called the "most severe oil supply disruption" in modern Russian history, comes as global energy markets tightened due to the Iran war.

Loadings at Primorsk and Ust-Luga, Russia’s two largest Baltic ports, were again suspended after a second drone attack this week triggered fires and damage to infrastructure.

The Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, which has a capacity of about 700,000 barrels per day, is lagging behind its loading schedule after drone attacks earlier this month, Reuters said.

And Russia’s pipeline exports to Hungary and Slovakia have been effectively halted since January due to damage to the Druzhba oil pipeline via Ukraine.

The disruptions mean that roughly 40% of Russia’s oil export capacity, about 2 million barrels per day, is currently offline as of Wednesday, Reuters said.

The outages have also led to a buildup of tankers waiting offshore.

At least 50 vessels are currently in the Gulf of Finland listing Primorsk or Ust-Luga as their destination, according to ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic.

Smoke from the fire at Ust-Luga, which has 33 fuel storage tanks with a total capacity exceeding 500 rail tank cars, has been visible from Finland, stretching for dozens of kilometers along the coastline of the gulf, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported.

Oil and gas exports are a key source of revenue for the Russian budget.

Ukrainian drone strikes Russian icebreaker Purga at Vyborg Shipyard

March 25, 2026

The General Staff of the Ukrainian Defense Forces reports that during a joint operation by the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Leningrad Region on the night of March 25, the Purga, a Russian Project 23550 military icebreaker, was hit at the Vyborg Shipyard.

The Barents Observer reports that the Purga, which is under construction for Russia’s FSB Coast Guard, was struck when a large number of Ukrainian drones targeted sites in and around St. Petersburg, including the icebreaker and the Ust-Luga oil terminal.

The Barents Observer report notes that Project 23550 vessels are designed for deep Arctic patrol missions. They are capable of breaking ice up to 1.7 meters thick (Arc7), functioning as tugboats, conducting search-and-rescue operations, and transporting cargo to remote military locations.

The report adds that the ships are armed with an 76 mm AK-176MA naval gun, feature a helipad and hangar for Ka-27 helicopters, and can deploy UAVs and high-speed boats. They also have rear platforms for container-based Kalibr-K cruise missiles.

White House: US ahead of expected 4-6 week timeline for Iran war; ‘very close’ to meeting objectives

Yemen’s Houthi rebels voice support for Iran, insist any decision to join war won’t be dictated by Tehran

Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthi rebels repeated their support for the Islamic Republic despite not taking part in the war against the United States and Israel, stressing that any decision to join the fight would be made independently and not dictated by Tehran, according to Houthi officials.

Three Houthi officials tell the Associated Press that the group is historically and religiously connected with Iran, calling it an ally of Yemen, but taking part in the war will be solely a Yemeni decision. The officials speak on condition of anonymity because they aren’t authorized to speak to the media.

Houthi attacks on vessels during the Israel-Hamas war upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which about $1 trillion worth of goods passed each year before the war. The rebels also fired drones at Israel.

Israeli officials wary Trump could announce ceasefire with Iran by Saturday — report

Jerusalem is concerned that US President Donald Trump will announce a ceasefire with Iran as early as this coming Saturday, even before finalizing understandings with Tehran on Washington’s 15-point proposal for ending the war, Channel 12 news reports, citing senior Israeli officials.

In response, Israel’s political and security leadership has drawn up a plan over the past day prioritizing targets in Iran to secure “maximal achievements” before a possible US push to halt the fighting, according to the report.

“The likelihood of a detailed and comprehensive agreement between Iran and the US remains low, but the possibility of a more general framework agreement is plausible, necessitating Israeli preparation,” Israeli officials tell the network.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently discussing the matter in a meeting with senior defense officials, including Mossad chief David Barnea, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Defense Minister Israel Katz, as well as some ministers and coalition members, the report adds.

The full security cabinet is also expected to convene later this evening.

This weekend will mark the fourth week of the US-Israeli campaign against Iran, for which the US set a four-to-six week timeline. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said this evening that Washington is “ahead of schedule and performing exceptionally,” and is “very close to meeting the core objectives of [the] operation.”

Netanyahu’s spokesman steps down, admits to racist remarks about Mizrahi Jews and attacks on PM

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman Ziv Agmon announces he is stepping down after racist comments he made against Mizrahi Jews and attacks on Netanyahu himself were aired last night.

In a statement released by Netanyahu’s office, Agmon acknowledges that the quotes are real, but claims they are taken out of context.

“Over the past week, a person with whom I had a long-standing friendly relationship decided to pass on partial quotes from our private conversations,” he says. “The vast majority of these conversations took place even before I entered my role in the Prime Minister’s Office. The quotes that were shared were taken out of context, and their sole purpose was to carry out a character assassination against me and harm the prime minister whom I serve.”

He says the reports about him do not represent him or his values, and that allegations of racism against Jews of Moroccan origin are “ridiculous in light of the fact that my immediate family has Moroccan roots.”

“The attempt to take fragments of sentences from personal and private conversations—most of them from years ago—make them public, and present them as current and official positions of the speaker must be condemned,” he says, while apologizing to anyone who was hurt by the statements.

He says that he joined Netanyahu’s office to serve behind the scenes, but since he is now in the limelight and “a divisive public discourse had formed around me,” he has informed Netanyahu that he is stepping down.

“I wish to express my deep appreciation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” he writes. “The great privilege of my life has been to assist him in these historic days, alongside Mrs. Sara Netanyahu, whose steadfast support strengthens the prime minister and the entire office.”

White House: US ahead of expected 4-6 week timeline for Iran war; ‘very close’ to meeting objectives

The US remains ahead of schedule in its war against Iran after initially giving a timeline of four to six weeks, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says.

“From the outset, President Trump and the Department of War estimated it would take approximately four to six weeks to achieve this critical mission. Twenty-five days in, the greatest military the world has ever known is ahead of schedule and performing exceptionally,” Leavitt says during a press briefing.

“We are very close to meeting the core objectives of operation, epic fury and this military mission continues unabated.

She recalls Trump’s decision to push back his threat to bomb Iranian power plants after “it was made clear to the United States that Iran wanted to talk. President Trump is willing to listen.”

“The remaining elements of the Iranian regime have another opportunity to cooperate with President Trump, permanently abandon their nuclear ambitions and cease actively threatening America and our allies,” Leavitt says.

“If Iran fails to understand that they have been defeated militarily and will continue to be, President Trump will ensure they are hit harder than they have ever been hit before,” she adds.

UN says Sudan hospital strike kills 70, warns of rising drone attacks

March 25, 2026

A hospital strike in Sudan’s East Darfur state has killed at least 70 people and injured more than 140, as the United Nations warned of escalating violence and a surge in drone attacks across the country.

Speaking at a U.N. press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday, a World Health Organization official said Al Daein Teaching Hospital, the main referral facility in the regional capital, was hit on March 20.

Initial reports put the death toll at 64, but it later rose to 70, including seven women and 13 children, according to Hala Khudari, the WHO’s acting deputy representative in Sudan.

A total of 146 people were injured, including patients and relatives. One doctor and two nurses were killed, while eight other health workers were wounded.

The hospital, which serves more than 2 million people in Al Daein and surrounding areas, sustained heavy damage, particularly to its outpatient and emergency departments.

Khudari said the attack has severely disrupted access to health care in a region already strained by conflict since April 2023. Patients in need of specialized treatment may now have to travel more than 150 kilometers (93 miles) to reach another referral facility.

The WHO and its partners have redirected patients to alternative facilities and are using pre-positioned medical supplies intended for about 40,000 people over three months. Additional trauma kits are being mobilized from neighboring Chad.

However, Khudari said the response is hampered by limited access, a weakened health system and severe funding shortages, with only about 6% of the 2026 health response plan funded.

The WHO has verified 213 attacks on health care in Sudan since April 2023, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths and nearly 800 injuries. In 2025, Sudan accounted for 82% of reported deaths from such attacks globally, according to the agency’s monitoring system.

Separately, the U.N. human rights office warned of a sharp increase in drone strikes, which it said have killed more than 500 civilians between Jan. 1 and March 15, most of them in the Kordofan region.

Marta Hurtado, a spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said drone attacks have continued in recent days. On March 21, a strike on a convoy of commercial vehicles in Al Daein reportedly killed 23 people.

Another drone attack on March 20 in Ad Dabbah, in Northern State, hit civilian infrastructure including an electricity substation and an engineering college, killing six people and cutting power to the area.

The human rights office said it has documented repeated attacks on markets, water and energy infrastructure, and health facilities, warning that such actions could amount to war crimes.

Hurtado said the U.N. has not attributed responsibility for the attacks but noted that both sides in the conflict are using drones extensively. She called for an immediate halt to their use.

The office also warned that the spread of drone warfare risks spilling beyond Sudan’s borders and escalating into a wider regional crisis. It urged countries to stop arms transfers that could fuel the conflict.

U.N. officials called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, which prohibits attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, and to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, through his spokesperson, called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians, health workers and aid personnel.

U.S. military reveals more details about drone incursions at strategic base

March 24, 2026

U.S. Northern Command’s recently-purchased “Flyaway Kit” (FAK) has been deployed against multiple drone incursions at a publicly undisclosed U.S. military base since the start of Operation Epic Fury, according to a spokesperson.

Launched by the Trump administration in coordination with Israel on Feb. 28, that ongoing large-scale campaign targeting Iran’s leadership and defense infrastructure is triggering elevated risks for retaliatory drone attacks that could pose harm to Americans and critical assets.

Details emerged last week that Northcom’s FAK identified and neutralized a small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) threat operating over a “strategic” installation on U.S. soil, in the early hours of the war.

Providing new information on Tuesday, a Northcom spokesperson told DefenseScoop: “There have been several incursions, but we have not determined nefarious intent.”

The spokesperson declined to confirm whether an investigation into those incursions is ongoing, if any drone platforms were recovered, or if the command has determined their source or purpose.

“The FAK engaged its jamming protocol during these incidents,” the spokesperson said.

Northcom was designated as the lead synchronizer for counter-drone operations within the continental U.S. and Alaska in late 2024. The command went on to acquire one initial flyaway kit to take out contemporary drone threats, with more due for delivery this spring.

Drone incursions over U.S. military bases and sensitive national security sites have surged in recent years, prompting concerns about threats to public safety even before Epic Fury.

But over the past few weeks since the operation kicked off, unauthorized drones have been reported at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. and Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Some of those incidents allegedly involved waves of swarming, high-tech drones, which could potentially point to high-tech surveillance operations involving foreign actors, cartels or other enemies.

“We will not name the base where our Flyaway Kit is deployed in order to preserve operational security. Specifically, connecting the Flyway Kit to a specific base can potentially illuminate that base’s vulnerabilities to an adversary,” the Northcom spokesperson told DefenseScoop.

“Additionally, by confirming a specific counter-small unmanned aircraft system platform, we would potentially give an adversary an advantage in circumventing our C-sUAS capabilities at that location.”

They further declined to say whether the command believes the incursions had any connections to Iran or Iranian sympathizers operating inside the United States.
