Huge miscalculation': MP hits back at Trump

Shadow Minister for Industry and Sovereign Capability Andrew Hastie has fired back at Donald Trump over his repeated accusations that Australia has not supported the US war against Iran.

During an appearance on the ABC’s Insiders this morning, the deputy leader of the Opposition labelled the conflict a “huge miscalculation” – one that has allowed Iran to “hold the whole world economy to ransom”.

The President’s ongoing complaints that America’s allies, namely the UK and Australia, had failed his administration “gives me a visceral reaction”, Mr Hastie said.

“I think about what we’ve done over the last hundreds years with the US: First World War, Second World War, 500 dead in Vietnam. We were there in Iraq and Afghanistan. So we’ve been a good ally,” he said.
