>The gospels were supposedly written 40+ years after jesus died.

Which would have been in the first century and in the lifetimes of those who knew him.

The first epistles were written 20 years after his death.

Regardless, there is overwhelming consensus among historians that using standard secular tools of scholarship Jesus existed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus#Historical_reliability_of_the_Gospels

Why would you think he doesn't?

Really? How do you know that Joseph Caiaphas was the high priest of the Jews?

Who were the administrators of Athens and Antioch from 10 B.C. to 100 A.D.?

>muh appeal to authority.

As opposed to pulling something out your ass, stamping your feat and saying this is what I want to believe so it must be true?

You are the one making an appeal to authority. You are saying there is no birth certificate for Jesus so he didn't exist. Historians ask things like was that normal for someone in his social class. Of those crucified by the Romans how many have their names recorded where they can be found?
