“With the incoming first family scrambling to get into place, Chief Justice Roberts began reciting the oath before President Donald Trump could even put his hand on the Bible,” radio host Terry Meiners posted on X.
Roberts muffed when administering the oath to Barack Obama in 2009.
Roberts stumbled over some of the words while giving the oath to Obama, Reuters reported. That made Obama mix up some of the words as well.
To silence any doubts that Obama’s swearing-in was legitimate, Roberts met Obama in the White House the next day and went through the correct, constitutionally mandated oath of office word for word.
Trump isn’t the first president who didn’t place his hand on a Bible while taking the oath, according to ABC News.
John Quincy Adams took the oath in 1825 while reading a law book.
Theodore Roosevelt did not use a Bible when he was sworn in following the death of President William McKinley in 1901.
Lyndon Johnson had his hand on a Catholic missal, or prayer book, when he took the oath aboard Air Force One after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
And Calvin Coolidge said that his mother’s Bible was at hand when he took the oath of office at the family home in Vermont after the death of President Warren Harding in 1923.
But the Bible wasn’t used in the ceremony, Coolidge wrote in his autobiography, because it was not traditional to do so in Vermont or Massachusetts while administering an oath.
Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution lays the presidential oath of office: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Five heavy metals including Cd, Cr, Fe, Ni and Pb were quantified in different brands of lotions, foundations, whitening creams, lipsticks, hair dyes and sunblock creams using atomic absorption spectrometry. Risk to the consumer’s health was determined using systemic exposure dosage (SED), margin of safety (MoS), hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI) and lifetime cancer risk (LCR).
