Germany cuts silver content in euro collector coins as prices gyrate
FRANKFURT, March 30 (Reuters) - The German government is cutting the amount of silver in two of its limited edition euro collector coins as prices of the precious metal gyrate and it seeks to cut down on speculation, the country's finance ministry said on Monday.
Silver prices, while off their highs, have surged over the past year as investors feared missing out on a rally sparked by geopolitical risks and trade tensions. The metal saw several waves of active retail demand for silver bars and coins.
The move in Germany will affect 35- and 50-euro coins, with a reduction in the amount of silver and an increase in the amount of copper. Both coins will weigh slightly less as a result.
The finance ministry said in a statement posted to social media that it was making the adjustment due to sharp fluctuations in silver prices.
"It is intended to prevent the coins from becoming the subject of speculation regarding precious metal price trends or from their issuance becoming impermissible for budgetary reasons," the ministry said.
The coins celebrate special occasions and are not for everyday use. Next year's 35-euro coin will honour the 150th birthday of German author Hermann Hesse.

Denver Imposes Water Restrictions, Orders Restaurants To Serve Only On Request
“Restaurants and catering businesses shall serve water only upon request,” the mandatory irrigation restrictions read.
The rules were issued in the Mile High City after the commissioners declared a Stage 1 Drought and made plans to seek a 20 percent reduction in water use. City officials expect drought conditions to last until April 30, 2027.
The update will affect many businesses, including the hospitality industry.
“Lodging establishments shall not change sheets more often than every four days for guests staying more than one night, except for health or safety reasons or upon express request of guests,” the Denver Board of Water Commissioners stated.
Drivers who attempt to wash their car are told to use a bucket or a hand-held hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle if they don’t use a commercial car wash.
Residents can water their grass only two days per week, according to the schedule provided by city officials, but it is prohibited between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., when the sun is up.
“Current conditions indicate that this is going to be an exceptionally challenging year for our water supply,” Nathan Elder, manager of water supply for Denver, said at a Denver Board of Water Commissioners meeting.

Ex-Biden staffer said he accidentally shot girlfriend in shower, charged with death
An ex-security staffer for President Joe Biden charged with killing his girlfriend in San Francisco told police it was a horrific accident.
Nation Wood, 25, was arrested Wednesday 24 hours after he allegedly shot and killed Samantha Emge, 22, a 2025 graduate of San Francisco State University, at the home they shared in the city’s Sunset District.
Wood says on his LinkedIn profile that he was as a part-time security staffer who worked with Biden’s White House Secret Service team starting in 2023. A photo on his profile shows him smiling with former VP Kamala Harris in front of a presidential jet.
The former White House security staffer told police he accidentally shot Emge through the wall in their apartment while she was showering, according to The San Francisco Standard.
Wood was “dry-firing” his weapon and didn’t realize it was loaded when a bullet pierced the wall and killed Emge while she was showering, The Standard reports.
Dry firing is the act of pulling the trigger on an unloaded firearm to practice shooting without live rounds.
Wood was charged with involuntary manslaughter for killing Emge. That charge is brought when prosecutors believe a killing was unintentional.
Charging documents filed by the San Francisco district attorney say Wood killed Emge “without malice.” He faces up to four years in state prison if convicted.
Wood shot and killed Emge at their apartment near San Francisco’s Ocean Beach on Tuesday, according to police.
