Russian military transport plane crashes in Crimea

A Russian An-26 military transport plane crashed in Crimea on Tuesday evening, killing all 29 people on board, the Defense Ministry has said.
According to the MOD, communication with the aircraft was lost at around 6 PM local time during a “routine flight” over the strategic Black Sea peninsula.
The Russian Defense Ministry said there were “no signs of external impact on the aircraft,” implying that the plane had not been shot down by Ukraine.
TASS cited a source as saying that the plane crashed into a mountain.
RIA Novosti reported that preliminary data suggests the aircraft may have suffered a technical issue.
The An-26 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft capable of transporting up to 40 soldiers and designed for deploying paratroopers and evacuating the wounded.

Russia claims to take full control of Ukraine’s Luhansk region

Russia’s Ministry of Defence says its forces have taken full control of the Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, suggesting they have wrested control of an area that had remained beyond their grasp since the beginning of their 2022 invasion.
“Units of the ‘West’ military grouping have completed the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic,” the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, using Moscow’s preferred name for the Ukrainian region.
There was no immediate confirmation of the development from Ukraine.
Russia’s Defence Ministry added that Russian forces also took control of the village of Verkhnya Pysarivka in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv region and the village of Boikove in the Zaporizhia region in southeastern Ukraine.
Luhansk and Donetsk make up the wider Donbas area. More than 99 percent of Luhansk has long been under Russian control and was one of four Ukrainian regions Moscow annexed in 2022. Russia also controls about three-quarters of Donetsk.
The Kremlin on Wednesday reiterated its demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from the entirety of Donetsk, which Kyiv has repeatedly dismissed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should have taken the difficult decision to withdraw his forces from the Donbas area “yesterday” to end what Russia calls the “hot phase” of the war.
Peskov’s comment came a day after Zelenskyy claimed Russia had given the United States an ultimatum, saying it would harden its terms for a peace settlement if Ukrainian forces did not withdraw from the Donbas within two months.
Zelenskyy added that he was surprised anyone could believe Russia could hope to conquer the remainder of the Donbas within that timeframe. He said Ukraine wanted a diplomatic solution but would only agree to a ceasefire at the current front lines.
Two people killed in drone attacks on Ukraine
Swarms of Russian drones attacked Ukraine overnight into Wednesday. Two women were killed in an attack on a civilian car on the front line in the Kherson region, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
An image posted by Ukraine’s Nova Poshta mailing company showed a warehouse in the western city of Lutsk in flames with thick smoke pouring from its roof.
Zelenskyy said in a social media post that Russia had used 339 drones in its overnight attacks.
“We proposed a ceasefire for Easter. In response, we’re getting Shaheds,” he said, referring to the Iranian-designed drones that Russia uses.
The Ukrainian leader said he would hold a video call with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Wednesday to discuss negotiations with Russia, now stalled due to the US-Israel war on Iran.
Ukrainian drones on Tuesday struck Russia’s Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga for the fifth time in 10 days, likely adding to Russia’s difficulties in exporting crude oil.
Meanwhile, several countries reported Ukrainian drones crossing into their airspace. Estonia’s armed forces said several drones appeared to have strayed from Ukraine while headed to Russia.
Separately, Finnish police said a drone detected in Finland on Tuesday had been carrying explosives. Latvian police said they had launched an investigation after debris from a drone was found in the country on Wednesday.
On Sunday, a Ukrainian drone crashed in Finland, marking the first time the Ukraine war had spilled onto Finnish soil.
Last week, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania reported drones of Ukrainian origin on their territory in connection with attacks on the Russian oil terminal.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said at a news conference on Tuesday that Ukraine “never aimed drones at these countries”.

UAE denies report that it is prepared to use force to open Strait of Hormuz
The UAE Foreign Affairs office denied a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday that it is prepared to use force to aid the US in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, releasing a statement saying the strait "cannot be subject to disruption or coercion by any state, particularly in ways that threaten global economic stability and international security."

IAF strikes 400 Iranian targets in two days, hits key sites in Tehran
The Israel Air Force struck approximately 400 targets linked to the Iranian regime over the past two days, including a broad overnight wave of strikes in the heart of Tehran, the IDF said Wednesday.

Bahrain removes possibility of force in new Strait of Hormuz resolution draft
Bahrain has circulated a new draft resolution to the UN Security Council condemning Iran over freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Unlike the previous draft, the new version does not include the option to use force under Chapter VII of the UN Charter if freedom of navigation is not guaranteed, according to the draft obtained by The Jerusalem Post.

Iran’s President Suggests Diplomatic Engagement Possible in Letter to U.S. Public

President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran on Wednesday released a letter addressed to the American people that said the “path of confrontation is more costly and futile than ever before” and suggested the possibility of diplomatic engagement.
Mr. Pezeshkian’s open letter came just hours before President Trump was scheduled to address the nation on Wednesday evening with what he described as an “important update” on the Iran war. Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump said on social media that Iran had requested a cease-fire.
Mr. Pezeshkian did not lay out specific steps for how further conflict could be avoided but his tone was conciliatory.
“Today, the world stands at crossroads,” Mr. Pezeshkian said in the letter, which was released by his office, adding, “The choice between confrontation and engagement is both real and consequential; its outcome will shape the future for generations to come.”
It was not clear whether Mr. Pezeshkian’s letter represented a consensus among Iran’s leaders. Earlier in the day, the spokesman of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, said Mr. Trump’s claim that Iran was seeking a cease-fire was “false and baseless.”
In the letter, published in English and Persian and about 1,000 words long, Mr. Pezeshkian’s tone also swung into defiance and patronization.
He delved into historical lessons about Iran surviving centuries of invasions and upheaval, asserting: “Iran has never initiated a war. Yet it has resolutely and bravely repelled those who have attacked it.”
In Iran’s dual system of government, the president’s role and authority is overshadowed by the supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his slain father in early March.
Mr. Khamenei has the last word on all important state issues, such as negotiations with Washington or conditions for ending the war.

Since the war started, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps have also gained more prominence, and senior military commanders have started calling more shots, including a former commander, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the current speaker of parliament and one of the generals running the war. Mr. Trump has said the United States was in contact with more moderate factions in Iran, without giving details.
It remained unclear whether Mr. Pezeshkian’s letter was written in coordination with Mr. Khamenei or the Guards. Iran has not officially responded to the Trump administration’s 15-point peace plan delivered to Tehran through Pakistan.
Mr. Trump has said that Vice President JD Vance could meet senior Iranian officials if peace negotiations were to take place.
Mr. Pezeshkian spoke to the president of the European Council, António Costa, on the phone on Tuesday and told him that Iran would be willing to end the war if its conditions were met, namely a guarantee of a permanent end to hostilities, according to a readout of the call by Iranian state media.
Iranian hard-liners attacked the president for suggesting Iran was open to negotiations on a cease-fire. Elias Hazrati, the head of communicants for the president, said in a social media post that attempts to undermine the president were “merely playing into the hands of aggressors.”
In his letter, Mr. Pezeshkian also laid out Tehran’s longstanding grievances against the United States, and recapped nuclear negotiations that he said ultimately led to Israel and the United States launching surprise military strikes on Feb. 28.
But then he suggested there was a distinction between America’s government and its people.
“The Iranian people harbor no enmity toward other nations, including the people of America, Europe or neighboring countries,” he wrote.
“Even in the face of repeated foreign interventions and pressures throughout their proud history, Iranians have consistently drawn a clear distinction between governments and the peoples they government.”
Mr. Pezeshkian defended Iran’s retaliatory attacks against Israel and Arab countries in the Persian Gulf. But he did not address Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused chaos to the global economy.
“What Iran has done — and continues to do — is a measured response grounded in legitimate self-defense, and by no means an initiation of war or aggression,” said Mr. Pezeshkian.

Pentagon Preparing for Drone Swarm ‘Crucible’

The Defense Department is moving forward with an autonomous drone swarm initiative that aims to give the U.S. military new tools for locating and destroying targets on the battlefield.
The Pentagon’s Chief Digital and AI Office recently issued a solicitation for the Swarm Forge effort, which is one of the “pace-setting” projects that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called for in a memo released in January outlining the department’s artificial intelligence strategy.
In June, the DOD plans to put industry’s drone swarm capabilities through their paces at a demonstration event, dubbed “Crucible.”
Although the U.S. military conducted what officials said was the first kinetic drone swarm on American soil during an exercise earlier this year, the Pentagon’s solicitation for Swarm Forge noted shortfalls in the current arsenal.
“The United States currently lacks the inventory and the doctrine to deploy massed, coordinated, low-cost robotic systems. Legacy platforms and slow acquisition cycles constrain operational adaptability and limit the ability to generate massed effects.
Traditional research and development approaches are insufficient to keep pace with evolving threats and do not produce deployable solutions at the speed of relevance.
The absence of integrated doctrine, training, and operational concepts for large-scale robotic employment leaves the joint force at risk of strategic and tactical disadvantage,” according to the solicitation released by the CDAO on its Tradewinds website.
Swarm Forge aims to help the department address those problems by accelerating the validation and fielding of AI-enabled collaborative, autonomous systems.
Via quarterly Crucible events and other efforts, the Pentagon aims to deliver “validated swarm packages,” to include integrated platforms, mission software, coordination logic, interfaces and tactics, that are ready for transition to operational units in 90 days or less, according to the solicitation.
The focus will be on evaluating small unmanned aerial systems and “heterogeneous autonomy technologies” in a field environment.
“For Swarm Forge, heterogeneous swarming implies multi-vendor UAS command, control and autonomy, not simply the use of different platforms offered by a singular vendor,” the solicitation explained.
At the Crucible event this summer, the drone swarms must include a minimum of four UAS in operation at the same time.
Officials want to see the “end-to-end autonomous completion” of various mission sets such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) or targeting under the “Find, Fix, Finish” concept.
The Pentagon is also interested in modular payload systems that can be tailored to meet a variety of mission needs.
Among the list of desired attributes included in the solicitation are AI agents that can autonomously coordinate the efforts and role assignments of robotic systems, a concept that officials are calling “inter-agent collaboration.”
The architecture would need to have decentralized control to avoid single points of failure in case a system is taken out of the fight, the solicitation noted.
Regarding “human-in-the-loop” requirements for command and control, officials wrote that there should be “minimal operator intervention required for swarm control,” but the systems will remain under “meaningful human command.”
The platforms are to be equipped with automatic target recognition and machine learning capabilities, including “multi-class ATR models with dynamic operator control” and “adaptive and emergent behaviors based on environmental feedback.”
So-called “in-field learning” would provide the ability “to adjust confidence thresholds and classification types” during missions, according to the solicitation.
Mindful that adversaries might employ jamming tactics, as seen during the Ukraine-Russia war, the Pentagon wants drone swarms that can navigate and communicate in GPS-denied and electronic warfare environments, using capabilities such as visual or inertial navigation systems and resilient comms links.
The solicitation did not explicitly address how Swarm Forge will flesh out doctrinal issues that the military is facing. The due date for industry white papers is April 17.
Notably, the government may use AI and machine learning tools “to assist in the administrative review and technical assessment of proposals and whitepaper submissions.”
However, humans will have final say over evaluations and award decisions, according to the solicitation.

On March 27, the White House announced a “powerful new official mobile app,” calling it “the fastest, most powerful way to stay informed and engaged with the Trump Administration.”
While armchair developers and infosec experts have questioned some of the app’s technical design choices, a former FBI intelligence analyst uncovered an unusual fact: The small business owner behind the White House app has a side hobby as a conspiracy theorist.
The White House app was created by 45Press, a company based in Canfield, Ohio, a town of fewer than 8,000 people located roughly halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. (Donald Trump was the 45th president of the United States.)
The company’s website describes it as a “design, development, and DevOps agency” and a WordPress VIP Agency Partner; it lists Amazon, NBC, and Sony as past clients.
According to his own X account, the CEO of 45Press, Joel Kendall, has a “hobby” running a social media presence and store under the name “Sir Storia,” which he calls “a website directory of historical and paranormal locations.
If it was historical, paranormal or unexplained, we want it added!”
In August 2025, Kendall created a (now-defunct) online store offering T-shirts for sale of what he called “the most famous UFO events that ever happened in Ohio.”
In a Facebook post, Kendall said he hoped his shop would be “the @walmart for UFOs, UAPs, Aliens, Paranormal and much more!”
His first T-shirt was about the Trumbull, Ohio, “UFO incident” in 1994. “If you’re a believer do you [sic] part for disclosure and get a shirt!” Kendall wrote.
Kendall has also put out multiple YouTube videos with titles like “Are Aliens and UFOs real? PROVE ME WRONG!” and “Did Nazis escape on a UFO?”
As of Tuesday afternoon, the “Aliens” video is no longer on YouTube. The “Nazis” video was recently “removed by the uploader,” according to the YouTube listing, and was deleted from Kendall’s Twitter account.
Social media accounts under both the Sir Storia name and Kendall’s name have either been made private or deleted.
Neither Kendall nor the White House responded to Ars’ request for comment.
OrangeSlices.ai, a website that tracks government contracting, noted in February that 45Press beat out 10 other companies for the contract.
According to the government’s Request for Quotation, the contract was for “Web hosting and development professional services” and required a firm that has a “WordPress CMS partner level of Silver or higher.”
Federal records show that the Executive Office of the President has so far obligated $1.4 million to 45Press for its services, though the contract has the “potential” to reach $8.4 million.

Deadline issued for UFO videos as Congress warns of 'very real threat' to US

Lawmakers have set a strict deadline for federal agencies to hand over secret UFO videos as officials warn the unidentified objects could threaten US forces.
Republican Rep Anna Paulina Luna penned a letter to the US Secretary of War requesting 46 specific Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) videos, telling Pete Hegseth to deliver them no later than April 14, 2026.
The requested footage includes dozens of military-recorded encounters showing spherical, cigar-shaped and Tic Tac-like objects spotted over war zones, oceans and sensitive airspace around the world.
Some clips reportedly captured UAP formations near Iran and Syria, incidents near US bases and airports and even a 2023 shootdown over Lake Huron.
Lawmakers said the footage could reveal patterns of activity near sensitive military sites and help determine whether the objects pose a national security risk.
'The lack of disclosure regarding the very real threat posed by UAPs in and around US restricted airspace is concerning,' Luna said in a statement.
'The Task Force has found responses from AARO, when questioned about UAP sightings and provided data, [to be] less than adequate.
'The presence of UAPs in and around the sensitive airspaces of US military installations poses a threat to the security of the armed forces and their readiness.'
Luna has taken a prominent role in advocating for transparency regarding UAPs.
She chairs a House Federal Secrets Task Force focused on investigating UAPs, declassifying federal records and protecting whistleblowers.
The threats extend beyond mysterious sightings, pointing to the danger unidentified objects pose when they appear near restricted airspace, military bases and active training zones.
Officials fear the craft could be conducting surveillance, testing US defenses or interfering with aircraft operations, raising concerns about both pilot safety and national security readiness.
Luna released the letter on Wednesday, saying: 'The continued lack of transparency surrounding these anomalies and the potential national security threat they pose is troubling.'
She added that the Task Force held a hearing on September 9, 2025, to discuss those concerns.
'Whistleblowers informed the Task Force that AARO possesses additional video records of potential UAP sightings,' she wrote.

The requested footage reportedly shows spherical objects weaving through clouds, hovering over open water and repeatedly appearing near US warships and submarines.
Several clips were captured by fighter jets, surveillance aircraft and drones operating in regions such as the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and the East China Sea.
In multiple cases, more than one object was tracked moving at high speeds at the same time, raising concerns about possible coordinated activity near sensitive military operations.
One of the requests: 'Spherical UAP over AFG in and out of clouds, 11/23/20,' is a video reportedly showing a massive disc weaving in and out of cloud cover.
Investigative journalists Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp, who leaked parts of the clip, said the footage was recorded by government personnel over the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in November 2020.
The object was spotted during a reconnaissance mission by a high-altitude Air Force platform.
Luna's deadline comes after President Donald Trump ordered the release of government files relating to UAPs and extraterrestrials on February 19.
Speaking at an event for the Department of War’s 'Arsenal of Freedom' tour in February, Hegseth said he intends to find out if aliens really exist, and the American people will learn the truth at the same time.
Although he admitted he never envisioned being the person put in charge of potentially revealing alien life to the world, Hegseth declared that the Department of War would fully comply with the president's orders.
'I did not have that on my bingo card at all,' Hegseth said.
'We've got our people working on it right now. I don't want to oversell how much time it will take, right? We're digging in. We're going to be in full compliance with that executive order, eager to provide that for the president.'
Hegseth didn't have an estimate of how long it would take for the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies to release every piece of information on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), which have been widely reported throughout the US since the 1940s.
Asked if he believes aliens exist, Hegseth replied: 'We'll see. I get to do the review and find out along with all of you.'

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has sparked controversy with claims about a secret US government program allegedly creating alien-human hybrids, remarks that have now drawn support from Australian Senator Ralph Babet.
In an interview with podcaster Benny Johnson, Gaetz said he was briefed by a US Army official about “hybrid breeding programs” involving captured extraterrestrials and humans.
According to Gaetz, the goal of these alleged programs is to create a hybrid race capable of intergalactic communication. He described the source as a “senior enlisted man” and a “whistleblower.”
Gaetz further claimed the briefing included details that extraterrestrials in custody were forced to mate with humans, including individuals allegedly taken from war zones or migrant caravans.
He acknowledged that he did not independently verify the claims but said he was told there could be between six and 12 such facilities across the United States.
The former lawmaker also suggested the whistleblower wanted members of Congress to visit these locations to prevent the operations from being moved to more secretive sites.
However, Gaetz did not explain why he did not raise the issue during his time in office.
Australian Senator Ralph Babet Weighs In
Backing Gaetz’s claims, Senator Ralph Babet wrote on social media that he could not disclose details due to classification but hinted at insider knowledge.
“I wish I could say more but unfortunately everything I know about the alien hybrid program is classified,” he said, adding, “Let’s just say some of you would be very surprised who’s not entirely human.”
In a follow-up post, Babet went further, claiming that aliens are already present. He said he had been briefed by intelligence on a “developing situation,” though details remain highly classified. “Australians will understand soon enough. Stay calm,” he added.
Gaetz’s remarks come amid renewed public interest in extraterrestrial topics. President Donald Trump recently said he plans to release government files related to alien life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and UFOs.
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she was unaware of any planned presidential speech on aliens, and Vice President JD Vance suggested in a separate interview that what people call aliens could be “demons.”
