Serbia thwarts plot to bomb Russia-Hungary gas pipeline – Vucic

Explosives were found near the border after Ukraine halted oil flows to Hungary

The Serbian authorities have discovered explosives of “devastating power” planted near a key gas pipeline transporting Russian energy to Hungary, President Aleksandar Vucic has announced, adding that he has briefed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the matter. This comes after Ukraine essentially shut down Russian oil supplies to Hungary through its territory.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Vucic said “two large packages of explosives with sticks” were found in the municipality of Kanjiza, around 10 km from the Hungarian border.

The city of Kanjiza is located near the Balkan Stream gas pipeline – the regional extension of the TurkStream pipeline. The Balkan Stream runs through Türkiye, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, and currently ends at Slovakia’s border. Hungary imports 7.4-7.6 billion cubic meters of gas annually via Serbia.

Vucic said the Serbian intelligence agencies “fortunately, did a good job” and vowed to ramp up energy security in the area. “We will deal mercilessly with anyone who thinks they are endangering the vital infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia,” he said.

The president did not assign blame but said he spoke with Orban about the situation, noting that an explosion would have caused gas outages in Hungary and northern Serbia.

Orban has confirmed the phone call, saying “the investigation is ongoing” and that he “has called an emergency defense council for this afternoon.”

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto also weighed in, saying Budapest “firmly reject[s] this latest attack, as undermining the security of our energy supply is an attack on our sovereignty.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has suggested that the masterminds of the plot are seeking “to strip Hungary of its sovereignty.”

“They are doing this in various ways: Politically, by trying to interfere in internal affairs and elections; economically, by forcing it to make decisions under pressure that harm the economy and the well-being of Hungarians, and through energy, by trying to prevent Hungary from obtaining quality resources at reasonable prices.”

Hungary and Ukraine have for months butted heads over supplies of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. In January, Kiev shut down the pipeline, citing a Russian drone strike on the infrastructure. Moscow has dismissed the claim; Hungary and Slovakia accused Kiev of lying and using the purported strike as grounds for political blackmail.

Ex-congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, once an outspoken supporter of US President Donald Trump, has sharply criticized his latest profanity-laden threat to Iran. Trump “has gone insane,” she wrote on X, urging “everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian… to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God.”

“Our President is not a Christian and his words and actions should not be supported by Christians,” she added. Greene also accused Trump of launching an “unprovoked war against Iran based on the same nuclear lies they’ve been telling for decades,” saying he has betrayed his 2024 campaign promises.

“This is not making America great again, this is evil,” she said, adding that the US was acting on Israel’s behalf, despite West Jerusalem being “more than capable of defending” itself and allegedly possessing undeclared nuclear weapons.

17:08 GMT

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi called his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow has stated. Lavrov said that for de-escalation efforts in the Middle East to succeed, the US must “abandon the language of ultimatums.”

The two foreign ministers also called for an end to the “reckless and illegal attacks on civilian, industrial and energy infrastructure” in Iran, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, which has been targeted by US-Israeli strikes at least four times since late February.

Lavrov and Araghchi stressed that attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities risk triggering a “radioactive catastrophe for the entire region,” according to the statement.

A building has collapsed in the Israeli city of Haifa after an Iranian missile strike, Iranian media reports.

According to the Times of Israel, citing the country’s Magen David Adom emergency service, four people have been injured in the attack, including one seriously.

Times of Israel military correspondent Emanuel Fabian, citing Israel’s Fire and Rescue Service, reports that the “building in Haifa that sustained a direct impact of an Iranian ballistic missile is at risk of collapsing” after a “blaze erupted at the scene.”

Israeli rescuers believe that there may still be people trapped under the rubble, according to Fabian.

“It’s been a very bloody Easter Sunday here in Lebanon, with a number of massacres taking place across the country,” RT correspondent Steve Sweeney reports from Beirut. Israeli strikes hit the Dahieh area in the southern suburbs of the capital, sending thick smoke into the sky.

Jnah, a densely populated residential neighborhood, was also struck.

“The scenes that we’ve seen unfolding there look catastrophic – the emergency services are still working on the scene, along with volunteers – they are taking the dead and the wounded to the nearby Rafik Hariri Hospital,” Sweeney reports.

An eyewitness said the area is home to many migrant workers, including from India and African countries. Lebanese authorities put the death toll at four, while survivors claim it is “much higher” after a strike allegedly hit a civilian building.

Strikes also hit Kaffa Hata in the Sidon district, where displaced people had taken refuge. At least seven people were killed there, including a Lebanese army officer, according to Sweeney.

"Unprecedented" Withdrawal Requests Now Hitting Private Credit

Late last week it was reported that one private credit company has effectively frozen up under a wave of redemption requests, an abrupt liquidity crunch that will likely do lasting damage to what little credibility it still had with investors.

This is exactly the kind of stress event I’ve been expecting ever since I flagged that psychology in the private credit space was starting to break—and I still believe conditions in private credit will get worse before they get better.

I’ve been flagging the sector as one of ten that I see as an avoid at all costs, and just days ago I wrote that conditions were worse than they appeared on the surface. This latest development only reinforces that view.

According to reporting from Bloomberg, Blue Owl Capital Inc. is now limiting redemptions from two of its flagship private credit funds after facing an unprecedented surge in withdrawal requests in the $1.8 trillion market. Blue Owl shares are down about -40% so far this year.

Investors in the $36 billion Blue Owl Credit Income Corp. asked to redeem 21.9% of shares in the latest quarter (up from 5.2%), while the smaller Blue Owl Technology Income Corp. saw redemption requests spike to a staggering 40.7% (up from 15.4%). This trend is…alarming…

Despite previously meeting withdrawals above their standard limits, the firm is now capping redemptions at 5%, effectively gating investor exits. In practical terms, that means billions in requested withdrawals are not being honored—roughly $3.2 billion remains locked in the larger fund alone.

Recall just days ago I highlighted how things were likely far worse in private credit than they appeared. As I’ve written, investors have already started pulling money, with withdrawals hitting records just as concerns about software exposure and valuation pressure have picked up.

What happens next from here shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been paying attention. If anything, this is just the beginning. As we move into Q2, expect more massive redemption requests across private credit vehicles as investors digest what gating actually means in practice. Once one fund limits withdrawals, it doesn’t calm nerves, it accelerates the exit impulse elsewhere.

Global Plastics Supply Chains Further Pressured As Abu Dhabi Petrochemicals Plant "Suspended" After Attack

One of the UAE's key petrochemical hubs halted operations early Sunday after falling debris from an air-defense interception sparked multiple fires. The incident adds to a growing list of disruptions across Gulf petrochemical infrastructure, highlighting major risks and potential incoming disruptions to the global supply chain for critical inputs used to make plastics.

Borouge's Abu Dhabi petrochemicals operations at Al Ruwais Industrial City in the Al Dhafra region halted operations after an attack sparked multiple fires across the plant. The plant produces polyethylene and polypropylene, which are building blocks for plastic manufacturing.

Crisis mode: Western leaders demand more sacrifices from their people

British and Australian citizens are paying the price for a war that their leaders refuse to condemn

The leaders of the UK and Australia have told their citizens to cut fuel consumption and prepare for months of hardship as a result of the US-Israeli war with Iran. But UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, couldn’t bring themselves to name who’s responsible.

Starmer and Albanese delivered a pair of seemingly coordinated addresses to their nations on Wednesday. “The economic shocks caused by [the Iran war] will be with us for months,” Albanese said, telling Australians to switch to public transport if possible, and promising to cut fuel taxes and prepare for the possibility that “the global situation gets worse and our fuel supplies are seriously disrupted.”

“Australia is not an active participant in this war,” he claimed, despite his government being the first in the world to back the US and Israel’s opening strikes on Iran on February 28.

Starmer struck a similar tone, declaring that “this is not our war,” but warning that “the impact of this war will affect the future of our country.” The British prime minister promised that “no matter how fierce this storm is, we are well placed to weather it,” and vowed to help “reopen” the Strait of Hormuz.

How bad is the energy crisis?

The US-Israeli war with Iran has triggered the most severe energy crisis since the 1970s, if not in history. Around 40% of the world’s oil comes from the Middle East. Nearly a third of the world’s seaborne crude oil transits the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway less than 40 km wide at its narrowest point, which through a combination of Iranian attacks on tankers and hesitance by Western insurers, is de facto closed to maritime traffic.

Additionally, Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Gulf states hosting American troops have taken refineries and export terminals out of action. Qatar, which supplies 20% of the world’s liquefied natural gas (LNG), completely halted production almost a month ago.

As a result, Brent oil prices – which serve as a barometer for 80% of the world’s crude oil – have sat above $100 per barrel for three weeks, while gas prices have surged 60% in the EU and more than 100% in the UK. While the crisis is global, its effects are particularly acute in the EU, UK, and Australia, all of which have sanctioned Russian oil and gas, shutting themselves off from a potential lifeline amid the crisis.

The EU once relied on Russia for 45% of its gas imports, before switching to more expensive American and Qatari supplies after 2022. With no date in sight for the resumption of Qatari imports, and with inflation spiking across Europe, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned last week that “we are facing a real shock…probably beyond what we can imagine at the moment.”

Are Starmer and Albanese pressuring the US?

The Strait of Hormuz was open to maritime traffic until the US and Israel launched an unprovoked attack on Iran in the middle of nuclear talks. However, neither Starmer nor Albanese mentioned the US or Israel in their speeches. Instead, both the UK and Australia issued a joint statement – along with 32 other US allies in Europe and the Gulf – blaming the closure of the strait squarely on “Iran’s actions.”

“We call on Iran to cease immediately its threats, laying of mines, drone and missile attacks and other attempts to block the Strait to commercial shipping,” the statement reads, accusing Tehran of posing “a threat to international peace and security.”

Trump draws criticism with fiery Easter message on Iran

US President Donald Trump did not take a break from his polarizing rhetoric on Easter Sunday, delivering an expletive-laden attack on Iran that sparked criticism on Capitol Hill and beyond.

“Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!” the president wrote just after 8:00 am, renewing his threat to unleash heavy bombing on Iranian power plants and bridges if Tehran refused to unblock the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

“Praise be to Allah,” he added, apparently sardonically, after ending another threatening message a day earlier with “Glory be to GOD!”

While the Republican president is well known for his straight talk, the post on his Truth Social network raised eyebrows, especially on a Christian holiday.

“Happy Easter, America. As you head off to church and celebrate with friends and family, the President of the United States is ranting like an unhinged madman on social media,” Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on X.

“He’s threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies. This is who he is, but this is not who we are. Our country deserves so much better.”

For Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who opposes the war in Iran, Trump’s attitude was “completely, utterly unhinged.”

Murphy added: “If I were in Trump’s Cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment,” referring to the clause that provides for a transfer of power if the president is unable to serve.

Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, also a Democrat, noted it was not the first time that the 79-year-old Trump had used stark language since the US and Israel launched their assault on the Islamic republic in late February.

“Bombing them back to the Stone Age, cursing them,” Kaine said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” news program.

“This is all embarrassing and juvenile, and it’s people trying to act like they’re puffed up and tough, when what we really see from the administration in this war is the absence of a plan, the absence of a clear rationale.”

‘Stop worshipping the president’

Criticism was not limited to Trump’s Democratic opponents.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the former congresswoman who was once a staunch Trump backer but now a fervent critic, slammed his message, especially on Easter Sunday.

“Everyone in his administration that claims to be a Christian needs to fall on their knees and beg forgiveness from God and stop worshipping the President and intervene in Trump’s madness,” Greene said in a post on X.

“Our President is not a Christian and his words and actions should not be supported by Christians,” said Greene, who opposes US military interventions abroad.

Some however praised Trump’s fiery rhetoric.

Conservative firebrand commentator Laura Loomer, who speaks regularly with Trump and has described herself as an Islamophobe, had nothing but praise.

“This is what I voted for. Bomb jihadis back to the Stone Age where their mentality permanently lives,” Loomer wrote on X.

“Trump said he’s going to bomb their infrastructure in Iran, and then he said ‘Praise be to Allah’. On Easter. Amazing. Just amazing.”

Vaccinate pre-school children against Covid to stop another pandemic, UK experts urge after new Cicada variant is identified in the US and Europe: 'Coming to the UK next'

A new variant of Covid could soon become the dominant strain in the UK, officials have warned, prompting experts to call for Covid vaccines to be included in preschool immunisation programmes.

Dubbed the 'Cicada' variant, the BA.3.2 virus is already rapidly spreading across the US, with cases now having been detected in 23 other countries including the UK.

UKHSA bosses have not revealed how many cases of the strain have been detected in the UK so far, but experts are concerned that the mutations it carries will allow it to sidestep immune defenses provided by existing vaccines.

Symptoms remain similar to that of the original virus including extreme fatigue, fever and body aches, but school-aged children seem to be more susceptible to the strain.

According to Professor Stephen Griffin, viral oncologist at the University of Leeds, this is partly the fault of 'short-sighted' advice forwarded by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to make vaccines 'optional' for children.

He said: 'At present the dynamics of this virus don't appear consistent with a fast-growing epidemic wave, more of a slow-building one we saw last year.

'Nevertheless, more infection means more rolls of the dice and a greater chance that more advantageous changes may occur.

'The risk of reinfection and juvenile long Covid were not taken into account back then and as such we must remember that many people remain relatively unprotected by vaccines.

Iran hits Israeli industrial zone for third time, strikes critical energy infrastructure across Gulf

IDF investigating failure to intercept projectile that struck Neot Hovav, home to a toxic waste dump, causing damage but no injuries; Islamic Republic targets civilian facilities in UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait

Iran fired four salvos of missiles at northern and southern Israel on Sunday, with one projectile hitting an industrial zone, as the Islamic Republic damaged critical infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait.

A missile fired at Israel struck the Neot Hovav industrial zone south of Beersheba on Sunday afternoon.

There were no reports of injuries.

The Israeli Air Force said that the ballistic missile carried a conventional warhead, not a cluster bomb. Attempts to intercept it were made, but air defenses failed to knock the missile down. The Air Force was investigating the matter.

A second missile fired at the south a short time later was likely intercepted, the Israel Defense Forces assessed.

More than 500 ballistic missiles have been launched from Iran at Israel since the start of the war.

Sunday’s attack was the third time the Neot Hovav industrial park has been hit since the start of the war.

Firefighters said there was no hazardous material leak as a result of the strike and that the missile hit an open area in the park, with the shockwave and shrapnel causing minor damage to a factory building.

“There are no known casualties. Concern over hazardous materials has been ruled out,” the service said.

The industrial zone is home to a toxic waste dump.

Last month, a fragment from a ballistic missile launched from Iran struck a chemical plant in Neot Hovav, sparking a blaze and prompting concerns of a hazardous chemical leak.

Earlier Sunday, salvos were fired at northern and southern Israel, sending hundreds of thousands of people running for shelter in the middle of the night. Northern Israel was again targeted at around 10 a.m.

Zelensky, Sharaa meet to discuss security cooperation in light of Iran war

It was the Ukrainian leader's first trip to Syria since diplomatic relations were re-established at the end of last year following the fall of Syria's long-time strongman Bashar al-Assad.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Syria on Sunday for talks with his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa, as Kyiv seeks to promote its military expertise across the region following the outbreak of the Iran war.

Zelensky, continuing his tour of Middle East countries, also said Ukraine wants to contribute to food security in the region.

In recent weeks, Zelensky has visited several countries across the Middle East, offering Ukrainian expertise in countering drone and missile attacks, developed during its four-year war with Russia.

"We agreed to work together to provide more security and opportunities for development for our societies," Zelensky wrote on Telegram. "There is a great interest in exchanging military and security experience."

Zelensky told the Syrian leader that Ukraine, as a major grain producer, was a reliable supplier of food and said the two leaders "discussed joint opportunities to strengthen food security across the region."

Hezbollah Targets Israeli Warship With Cruise Missile

Hezbollah on April 5 claimed it had targeted a warship of the Israeli Navy with a cruise missile off the Lebanese coast, the first such claim by the group since the start of confrontation in Lebanon as a direct result of the American-Israeli war on Iran.

In a statement, the group said it targeted the warship as it was sailing 68 nautical miles off the coast of Lebanon, claiming that it was “preparing to launch attacks on Lebanese territory” and that “a direct hit was confirmed.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) told AFP when contacted later that it was “not aware” of any such attack by Hezbollah. The military has maintained a very high level of censorship since the start of the ongoing confrontation.

It was widely believed that Hezbollah’s anti-ship capabilities were wiped out by the IDF during the previous confrontation in Lebanon, which broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip. The latest attack shows, however, that the group is still in possession of anti-ship cruise missiles.

Hebrew media reports warned when the ongoing confrontation first broke out that Hezbollah was still capable of targeting Israeli Navy warships.

The missile used by Hezbollah in the latest attack was most likely an Iranian-made Noor, which is a reverse engineered Chinese C-802.

The Islamic Republic produces several versions of the Noor, with an average range of 120 kilometers, or around 125 nautical miles. The missile is equipped with an Inertial navigation system, and utilizes an active radar housing seeker in its terminal phase.

Israeli Navy warships have been especially active during the ongoing confrontation with Hezbollah in Lebanon, carrying out pinpoint strikes against command centers and ammunition depots along the coast of the country, in addition to assassinations.

It’s worth noting that during the war of 2006 in Lebanon, Hezbollah managed to hit INS Hanit, a Sa’ar 5-class corvette of the Israeli Navy using anti-ships cruise missiles. Four crew members were killed during the attack, which remains one of the group’s biggest achievements in the decades-long conflict with Israel.

Suspicious Drones Hit Key Iraqi Oil Field Following Iranian Decision To Allow Country To Export

Six unidentified drones targeted the Bazarkan oil field in the southern province of Maysan on April 4 evening, Shafaq News reported, citing an Iraqi security source.

The attack struck facilities operated by foreign companies within the field, the source told the news outlet, noting that the strike caused material damage but no casualties.

Bazarkan is one of the largest oil fields in Maysan. It is operated by a consortium of international and state-owned companies under a long-term contract with Iraq’s Missan Oil Company (MOC). Among the companies are China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO).

The American-Israeli war on Iran, which broke out more than a month ago, quickly spread to Iraq, with Iran-allied armed factions there, united under the umbrella group the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, launching retaliatory strikes against bases hosting U.S. forces, the American diplomatic mission in Baghdad and even energy facilities.

Nevertheless, the nationality of the companies operating at the Bazarkan oil field suggest that Iran’s allies were not behind the latest attack.

Notably, the attack took place as the Iranian military announced that Iraq will be exempted from shipping restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The strategic waterway — where roughly 20% of the world’s oil production passes daily — has effectively been closed by Iranian fire since the start of the war.

“Brotherly Iraq is exempt from any restrictions we have imposed on the Strait of Hormuz,” Iran’s military spokesman said in an Arabic-language video statement published by state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.

Bloomberg News said that the declaration has the potential to unleash as much as three million barrels a day of Iraqi oil cargoes. An Iraqi official, however, cautioned that the usefulness of the exemption will depend on whether shipping companies are willing to risk entering the strait to collect cargoes.

The attack on the Bazarkan oil field may have been carried out in retaliation to the Iranian declaration, possibly to keep energy prices up.
