Iranian hackers' targeting of US critical infrastructure has escalated since start of war, US says

According to the advisory, the hacking operations targeted unnamed critical infrastructure organizations in the government services and facilities, water and wastewater systems, and energy sectors.

Iranian hacking campaigns targeting equipment used across multiple US critical infrastructure sectors are escalating in response to hostilities, US cybersecurity, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies said on Tuesday.

The hackers are targeting publicly exposed programmable logic controllers and supervisory control and data acquisition displays, according to the advisory. The targeted devices are used to interact with or control certain critical infrastructure-related equipment and systems, the advisory said.

The hackers are seeking to cause “disruptive effects within the United States,” according to the advisory. “In a few cases, this activity has resulted in operational disruption and financial loss."

The warning comes as President Donald Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to make a deal with the US, while Iran said it would attack additional infrastructure targets across its Gulf neighbors.

In some cases, the hackers interacted with data files in the systems to alter display data, while also extracting device project data, according to the advisory.

Targets of Iran's hacking operations

The hacking operations targeted unnamed critical infrastructure organizations in the government services and facilities, water and wastewater systems, and energy sectors, according to the advisory.

The advisory was issued by the FBI, the National Security Agency, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, and US Cyber Command’s Cyber National Mission Force.

The FBI declined additional comment.

A new undercover video released by the O’Keefe Media Group on Tuesday has shown the press secretary for California’s state controller saying that audits are not getting done because the office lacks staff, and admitting that there’s fraud "everywhere" in the state.

An undercover reporter asked Bismarck Obando, the press secretary for State Controller Malia Cohen, why the office was not auditing state agencies more aggressively, he said that the office has done "some of them that are required," but said that in order to be "more proactive," the office needs more staff to do it. "Instead of funding us, they cut us. They keep cutting our auditing teams."

He said at the state agency level, "none of them want us to go in there and audit them." He said that if the office had the funding and staffing levels, they could perform those audits. However, "the legislation hasn’t given them to us because they don’t want to find out what the deal is."

Obando was asked by an undercover reporter whether he believes there’s fraud going on in the state of California, to which he replied, "Everywhere," such as "cities, counties, special districts, hospitals, insurance companies."

He later said there "100 percent" was fraud in the state when asked if he thought there was "genuine fraud" in California. He said, "I mean, we’re like the fourth-biggest economy in the entire world. So yes, there’s money to be found."

He said California is able to get away with the fraud because of the lack of audits as well as "spending money, overspending money, no one accounting for money. But audits are important."

He said that even if fraud is caught in the state, there is not much that can be done. "People get fired," he said, "but there’s not much you can do because you can’t really track the money. Once you catch the debit out, what are you going to do with it?"

U.S. Marshals raided the upscale home of former Republican lobbyist Jim Courtovich, enforcing a federal court order tied to a $4 million judgment stemming from allegations of financial misconduct.

Courtovich, the founder of Sphere Consulting and a fixture on the K Street party circuit, once rubbed elbows with media elites and GOP heavyweights.

During the 2016 Republican primary, Courtovich supported Jeb Bush, one of Trump’s main rivals. He reportedly did not vote in the 2016 general election.

The raid enforces a federal court judgment ordering him to repay $4 million-plus, in what Saudi-backed investors claim was a brazen breach of contract and outright fraud.

The Federal Government has awarded $78 million in grants to Australian companies that make parts for F-35 fighter jets used by the IDF in the Gaza genocide.

The same parts are now likely deployed in the US and Israeli illegal bombing campaign in Iran.

Analysis of government grant records shows that since 2011, at least $78m has been distributed to companies to support their involvement in the multinational Joint Strike Fighter program.

Of that total, $48.5m has been awarded since October 7, 2023.

The funding forms part of a suite of industry support programs designed to help Australian companies secure work on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program, a US-led global supply chain for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet.

Millions in grants to defence contractors

The analysis reveals that a relatively small number of firms have received a significant share of the funding, with grants targeted at expanding Australia’s role in the maintenance and sustainment of the F-35 fleet.

The largest recipient was Rosebank Engineering (formerly RUAG Australia), which received $30.2m across multiple grants. This included $16.3m awarded in April 2025 to establish an Asia-Pacific depot to repair F-35 power and thermal management systems, and a further $9.1m to develop a regional repair capability for landing gear.

Rosebank Engineering “provides over 150 components for the Landing Gear and Weapons Bay Systems” on the F-35 fighter jet.

The second-largest recipient was Northrop Grumman Australia, which received $13.4m in June 2024 to support the activation of a depot for the maintenance and overhaul of F-35 components for the Asia-Pacific region, with potential to service European assignments.

Other major recipients include Moog Australia, Quickstep Technologies and Ferra Engineering, alongside a network of specialist manufacturers.

In total, more than 75 Australian companies are now involved in the F-35 program, collectively securing contracts worth more than $5 billion.

A Chinese-Uzbek archaeological team has discovered a remarkable 3,000-year-old city along the Silk Road that is rich with artifacts, providing new insights into urban development during the early Iron Age in Central Asia.

Originally discovered in 1969, the expansive Bandikhan II site, covering 107,639 square feet, is located in the Bandikhan oasis. The Surxondaryo region in southern Uzbekistan is known as an archaeological treasure trove, containing multiple ancient settlement mounds. It was only recently, in 2023, that a team began excavations at Bandikhan II, which served as a crucial hub on the legendary Silk Road.

During the excavation, archaeologists uncovered remnants of an eastern wall, numerous structures, and interconnected rooms, along with a wealth of artifacts. These findings enabled researchers to identify the city as belonging to the Yaz culture, further enhancing our understanding of their role within ancient Bactria, according to TV Brics.

Though a section of this major urban center of the ancient Bactrian kingdom has been excavated thus far, the findings are providing key evidence “for understanding the form of early Iron Age city-states in southern Central Asia and the evolution of urban layouts from Bronze Age to the early Iron Age,” as per Global Times.

A Silk Road city

So far, archaeologists have explored only 3,229 square feet of the 107,639-square-foot site in the eastern section of the ancient city. However, they have confirmed that it is the largest and best-preserved settlement in the Bandikhan oasis, with foundations dating back to the early Iron Age. Researchers have begun to understand the city’s layout and how it was constructed and used during that time.

The well-preserved eastern wall features a trapezoidal cross-section, demonstrating the construction techniques employed. Inside the city, they found a detailed snapshot of daily life, including five interconnected rooms. One of these rooms was used for sleeping and contained a niche where a lamp was placed, as reported by Heritage Daily. This conclusion was drawn from the hardened interior, which indicated repeated burning and revealed the niche’s function.

Among the recovered artifacts were pottery pieces, including carinated jars, bowls, and flat-bottomed dishes. The forms and decorations of these items matched those found at other Yaz sites, such as Kuchuktepa and Yaztepa, clarifying who built this advanced urban center. While Bandikhan II shares structural similarities with these sites, it also displays notable differences, particularly in the absence of semicircular defense towers along its exterior walls.

An assortment of stone tools, including grinding slabs, mullers, pestles, and mortars, suggested that grain was processed on-site. Additionally, bronze knives and arrowheads were identified, along with seashells.
