Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Western Hemisphere Subcommittee ChairwomanMaría Elvira Salazar (R-FL) joined Latino-Jewish Caucus chairs Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), Tony Gonzales (R-TX), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and member Henry Cuellar (D-TX) in releasing the following statement after Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s decision to break diplomatic relations with the State of Israel:

“As bipartisan friends of the Colombian and Israeli people, we unequivocally condemn President Petro’s decision to unilaterally sever diplomatic relations with Israel.

“This inflammatory and unwarranted decision is unacceptable from a Major Non-NATO Ally of the United States, counterproductive to Petro’s ostensible goal of securing the release of hostages, and deeply damaging Colombia’s national interests and objectives.

“President Petro’s vitriolic rants comparing Israel to the Nazis, embrace of Hamas’ terrorist ideology, and justification of violence targeting Israeli civilians, create tangible risks for Colombia’s Jewish community which is facing a surge in antisemitism. Today’s action adds insult to injury, especially for the family of Elkana Bohbot, an Israeli-Colombian dual national and hostage of Hamas for 209 days.

“Shamefully, Petro’s decision emboldens Hamas, undercuts global pressure to seek the return of hostages, and undermines the tireless efforts of serious world leaders to seek justice on behalf of Israeli and Palestinian victims of Hamas. These actions do not reflect the views or interests of the Colombian people, who have benefitted for decades from security and economic cooperation with Israel and the United States.

“As members of the Congressional Latino-Jewish Caucus, we affirm its mission statement highlighting the importance of fostering strong multilateral ties between the United States, Latin American and Caribbean nations, and the State of Israel, and roundly denounce President Petro’s disgraceful decision to sever relations with Israel.”

Chairwoman Salazar is a leader in combating antisemitism both at home and abroad. She has repeatedly criticized

leaders abroad who have espoused antisemitism and introduced legislation to fight it here in the United States.

@WesternLensman

Here is Maria Salazar introducing the “Dignidad Act” back in July 2025,flanked by Lawler and Democrats.

"No more need to choose between amnesty or deportation."

She started pushing this garbage 6 months into the Trump term.

DAVOS (FLV) – U.S. Rep. Maria Salazar, R-FL, joined a panel of America’s Republicans tospeak at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Tuesday.

Børge Brende, president of the WEF, asked the panelists a variety of questions regarding immigration, U.S. partisanship and Ukraine. The panel included Republicans such as Brian Kemp, Kyrsten Sinema, Christopher A. Coons, Joe Manchin III, Maria Elvira Salazar, Mikie Sherrill, and JB Pritzker.

“I do believe that regardless of any discussions or doubts of the hundred billion dollars that we have donated or given to the Ukrainians to defend themselves, we will at the end vote, at least my vote tocontinue with the Ukrainians until they win,” Salazar said.

As a Cuban American, Salazar said she knows what the Soviets and Russians can do, claiming theU.S. would “liberate” Europe in 2023like it did decades ago.

“The United State saved Europe. I’m very aware that Ukraine, the situation is very important for this part of the world because we are here in Switzerland,” Salazar said. “It puts things in perspective that this is a very important issue for the United States.”

She said some people in the GOP have doubts because theres a lot of issues to pay attention to in the U.S., such as immigration.

“I agree that immigration is one of the major problems we’re facing our shores. There’s no way the United States can continue to be what it is – the most important power in the world – the number one economy in the world – if we don’t have hands,” she said.

Salazar says it’s time to pass a complete “overhaul” of the immigration system.

“It’s time to seal the border, let’s see who comes in and who doesn’t, and then turnaround and give dignity, that doesn’t mean path to citizenship, that means to include them and make them dignified members of our community,” she said.

Since March 2021, U.S. Border Patrol has released approximately one million immigrants at the Southwest Border, including as many as 105,000 in a single month. To compare, in the last month of the Trump Administration, only 17 were released.

Border crossings reportedly topped 2.76 million, breaking previous record. Border Patrol encountered nearly 100 people on the terrorist watchlist in fiscal year 2022, a 276 percent increase when compared to the past five years combined.
