Manhattan DA investigating Rep. Eric Swalwell sexual assault allegation at NYC hotel
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office says it is investigating an allegation that Rep. Eric Swalwell sexually assaulted a former staffer in 2024 while at a hotel in New York City.
"We urge survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations to contact our Special Victims Division at 212-335-9373," Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's office said in a statement Saturday. "Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are well-equipped to help you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered manner.”
The investigation follows reporting this week from the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN that accuses the top Democratic candidate for governor of California of sexually assaulting the staffer while she was too intoxicated to consent.
The woman alleges that in April 2024, after a night of drinking with Swalwell, she woke up in the hotel room to him having sex with her.
“I was pushing him off of me, saying no,” she told CNN. “He didn’t stop.”
The woman worked for Swalwell from 2019 until 2021, NBC News confirmed. The woman’s lawyer declined to comment and NBC News has not verified her allegations.
On Friday, Swalwell denied the allegations and said that he would spend the weekend with family and friends and share an update “very soon.”
“These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They're absolutely false. They did not happen, they have never happened, and I will fight them with everything that I have,” he said.
Swalwell was among the leading Democrats in the race to replace outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom. But in just hours, he saw his most prominent supporters — including U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and powerful labor unions — drop their endorsements and call for his exit from the race.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that a woman said Swalwell sexually assaulted her in 2019 and 2024. The newspaper reviewed text messages about the alleged 2024 assault and spoke to people whom she had told about it. She told the newspaper she did not go to police because she was afraid she would not be believed.
The woman worked for Swalwell in 2019, when the first alleged assault occurred, and the 2024 assault allegedly occurred after a charity gala, the newspaper reported. She said in both cases she was too intoxicated to consent to sex.
Swalwell was elected in 2012 and represents a House district east of San Francisco. He launched a presidential run in April 2019 but shuttered it a few months later after failing to catch on with voters. Swalwell, who is married and has three children, is perhaps best known nationally as a House manager in President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial during his first term in early 2021.

CENTCOM: US forces begin mine-clearing operations in Strait of Hormuz
US Central Command said on Saturday its forces have started setting conditions to clear sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, with two Navy destroyers operating in the waterway as part of efforts to restore safe maritime transit.
CENTCOM said USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy transited the strait and operated in the Persian Gulf in a broader mission aimed at removing mines previously laid by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.
“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” said CENTCOM commander Gen. Brad Cooper.
The command added that additional US assets, including underwater drones, are expected to join the operation in the coming days.

US clearing out Strait of Hormuz, Trump claims as Iran threatens to attack unauthorized ships
Three US officials confirmed that two US Navy guided-missile destroyers passed through the strait without issue in what was described as a "freedom-of-navigation mission."
US Navy ships reportedly crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday afternoon as US-Iran ceasefire negotiations kicked off in Pakistan, though Iran denied the reports and threatened to attack any unauthorized ships in the strait.
Axios, citing a US official, reported that several US Navy ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz. According to the report, the move was not coordinated with the Iranian Navy and was the first time US Navy ships made such a move since the start of the war.
According to the Wall Street Journal, three US officials confirmed that two US Navy guided-missile destroyers passed through the strait without issue in what was described as a "freedom-of-navigation mission."
Minutes later, a senior Iranian military official denied the reported crossing of US vessels on Iranian government-owned state television.
Iranian media additionally released a warning that any US Military ship will be attacked within 30 minutes if it attempts to cross the Strait. According to State TV, a US vessel in the strait turned back after receiving the warning.
Axios reporter Barak Ravid disputed Iranian media claims that the ship turned back after the warning, stating that a senior US official informed him that the US had not received any such threats.
Later on Saturday night, the IRGC stated that military vessels attempting to pass through the strait would be met with a "strong response," and said that only non-military vessels would be allowed through, under specific regulations.
This comes after President Donald Trump said that the United States is starting the process of clearing underwater mines out of the Strait of Hormuz.
“We’re now starting the process of clearing out the Strait of Hormuz as a favor to Countries all over the World, including China, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, and many others,” Trump stated, slamming the named nations for not having the “courage or will” to do so themselves.
He asserted that Iran is “losing big,” with US and Israeli strikes having decimated much of Iran’s military, navy, and air force capabilities.
“The only thing they have going is the threat that a ship may ‘bunk’ into one of their sea mines, which, by the way, all 28 of their mine dropper boats are also lying at the bottom of the sea,” Trump continued.
After Trump's statements, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the US has begun naval operations aimed at clearing Iranian sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz in a post on X/Twitter on Saturday.
Two US Navy guided-missile destroyers, the USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, successfully transited the Strait and began setting conditions for the mission to ensure that the waterway is completely clear of mines laid by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage, and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce,” CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said of the operation.

UK Prime Minister Pulls Deal to Sacrifice Islands Housing Key US Military Base
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pulled the deal to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands—home to the pivotal U.K.-U.S. military base Diego Garcia—from the United Kingdom to Mauritius, after President Donald Trump fiercely opposed the measure.
While the U.K. and Mauritius signed a preliminary deal in May 2025, it still required parliamentary approval, and the United States has substantial input in the decision, as well. Britain had exiled the inhabitants of the Chagos Islands—a small series of atolls in the Indian Ocean strategically located between Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands—when detaching the islands from Mauritius before Mauritius gained independence in 1968.
“The decision by Britain’s Labour government to drop the Chagos bill from the king’s speech is a massive and humiliating defeat for Keir Starmer,” Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal after the news broke Friday.
“Keir Starmer had made the Chagos surrender deal his top foreign policy priority, and the fact that this deal is no longer going through Parliament is a huge blow to Starmer’s far-left agenda,” Gardiner added.
While the Labour Party had hailed the deal as an effort to decolonize the Indian Ocean islands, critics warned that the deal would undermine the Diego Garcia U.S. military base. The agreement would have given Britain a 99-year lease for Diego Garcia. Critics also characterize Mauritius as a close Chinese ally, so surrendering the islands could strengthen China’s influence in the region.
The U.S. used Diego Garcia to launch some of the attacks in Operation Epic Fury.
“As the president has repeatedly stated, Diego Garcia’s strategic location makes it of great importance to the national security of the United States,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly told The Daily Signal in a statement Friday. “He will never allow the U.S. presence at Diego Garcia to be undermined or threatened for any reason. Recent developments have proven him right once again.”
“Diego Garcia, a strategically placed island base, has enabled U.S. power throughout the Indian Ocean region, directly supporting and engaging in strike missions today in Iran, and during the Global War on Terror in Afghanistan,” Brent Sadler, a 26-year Navy veteran and senior research fellow at Heritage, told The Daily Signal.
“Loss of this base or compromising its operational viability through Chinese (or other powers’) encroachment on it would be a severe blow to U.S. and Western influence and power projection in the region not easily replaced.”
Gardiner credited Trump’s opposition for the bill’s defeat, saying Trump was the “key reason” behind it.
“The United States has stopped the Chagos surrender deal from moving forward and this is great news for the American people, and also, frankly, for the British people, as well,” he said.
“The Heritage Foundation has led the fight against the Chagos deal in Washington for the last 18 months,” Gardiner added, calling the deal “one of the most dangerous threats to U.S. national security in many decades.”
“As long as President Trump is in office, there’s zero chance of the Chagos deal moving forward,” he concluded.
Liu Pengyu, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., disputed concerns that China might have supported the Chagos Islands deal in order to weaken the U.S.
“China adheres to the fundamental principles of international relations, including mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,” Liu told The Daily Signal.
“China firmly supports the United Nations decolonization process and fully understands and supports Mauritius’s legitimate and reasonable claims on decolonization.”
“China has no self-interest in this matter,” he concluded.

Secretary Marco Rubio
@SecRubio
Masoumeh Ebtekar - also known as "Screaming Mary" - was the spokeswoman for the Islamic terrorists who stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days - subjecting them to beatings, starvation, and mock executions.
In 2014, the Obama Administration granted visas to her son and his family to enter the United States. In June 2016, the Obama Administration gave them lawful permanent resident status via the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program.
This week, I terminated their lawful permanent resident status and today, Seyed Eissa Hashemi, Maryam Tahmasebi, and their son are now in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending their removal from our country.
Her family should never have been allowed to benefit from the extraordinary privilege of living in our country.
America can never become home for anti-American terrorists or their families - and under the Trump Administration, it never will.

Former Rep. Eliot Engel, who worked on foreign affairs for decades, dies at 79
The New York Democrat won his first congressional election in 1988. In 2020, he lost in the primary to now-former Rep. Jamaal Bowman in a race seen as a progressive upset.
Engel died Friday at a Bronx hospital of complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to his family.
“During his over 44 years in public service, Eliot Engel fought tirelessly for his constituents at home and for peace and security around the world,” the family said in a statement.
Engel won his first congressional election in 1988, defeating a 10-term incumbent on an insurgent, reformist platform. More than 30 years later, he left office in similar fashion after losing a 2020 primary to now-former Rep. Jamaal Bowman in a race seen as a progressive upset over the party’s pragmatic wing.
A former teacher and state Assembly member, Engel rose through the ranks of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, eventually becoming its chair in 2019. He was a strong supporter of Israel and one of the first lawmakers to call for military intervention on behalf of Kosovo, then a province where ethnic Albanians were seeking independence from Serbia, in their war in the 1990s. A U.S.-and-U.K.-led NATO bombing campaign opened the way for Kosovo’s eventual independence nine years later.
Engel was “a fierce advocate for Kosovo and the Albanian community at a time when few others were paying attention,” U.S. Rep. Richie Torres, a fellow Bronx Democrat, said in a statement Friday.
Engel also helped negotiate the Harkin–Engel Protocol, an international agreement that aimed to eliminate the “worst forms of child labor” on cocoa farms in West Africa.
And he headed the Foreign Relations Committee as it worked on the 2019-2020 impeachment inquiry into Trump over the Republican’s efforts to prompt Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to scour for dirt on Trump’s then-rival Joe Biden.
After Trump was impeached and then acquitted in February 2020, Engel vowed not to abandon the issue, saying there were “a lot of unanswered questions that the American public deserves to know” answers to.
Soon after, the COVID-19 pandemic set in — and with it, questions, spurred by an article in The Atlantic, about Engel’s absence from his district.
That scrutiny grew following a hot mic incident in which Engel was heard trying to convince another Bronx official to let him speak at a news conference, saying: “If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.”
During his years in office, Engel became known for waiting for hours to get an aisle seat in the House chamber for the State of Union address, so he could greet the president — in full view of TV cameras — as the chief executive entered.
But Rep. George Latimer, a Democrat who now holds what was Engel’s seat, said “his legacy consists of hard work on issues and kindness to all.”

ICE detainer lodged for illegal migrant accused of murdering 15-year-old Missouri boy who begged for his life
DHS says Yefry Archaga-Elvir bragged about the killing and had been released into the US by the Obama administration.
The Department of Homeland Security lodged an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer request for an illegal migrant accused of murdering a 15-year-old boy who allegedly begged for his life before being killed.
Yefry Archaga-Elvir, a Honduran national, and other suspects allegedly lured Miles Young into believing he was meeting a girl. DHS cited a prosecutor in the case who said that Archaga-Elvir blocked Young’s vehicle and chased him down on foot before allegedly shooting him in the chest with a handgun.
The department says that witnesses heard Young’s final words — "I just don’t want to die."
"Miles Young was lured to his death believing he was going to meet a girl. Instead, he was ambushed and killed in cold blood by this illegal alien who went on to brag about the murder," said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis.
"This animal was released into our country by the Obama administration. ICE lodged an arrest detainer requesting Missouri not release this depraved killer from jail into American neighborhoods," Bis added.
According to DHS, a probable cause affidavit revealed Archaga-Elvir allegedly made a "braggadocios" phone call regarding the killing of Young.
The department says Archaga-Elvir was arrested in Texas as an accompanied minor in 2015, but he was released by the Obama administration.
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., also weighed in on the arrest and ICE detainer lodged for the suspect, saying Archaga-Elvir should have never "been in Missouri in the first place."
"A child in my home state of Missouri was ambushed and murdered by an illegal alien," Hawley told Fox News Digital. "Miles Young begged for his life. The criminal never should have been in Missouri in the first place."
"He must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and all criminal illegal aliens must be deported so this tragedy never happens again," Hawley added.
Court documents obtained by KY3 show alleged premeditation prior to Young’s death.
The suspects used two vehicles to block Young from escape, and tracked his location before carrying out the attack.
A fundraising page was set up for Young following his death, where his family grieved their loss in a post.
"Miles was a compassionate, loving, and kind 15-year-old who brought light to everyone around him," his family wrote. "He was a big brother, a son, a grandson, and a friend… full of life and always showed care for others."
"No parent should ever have to outlive and bury their child," the statement continued.
Unlike many "sanctuary" states and jurisdictions, Missouri law RSMo § 67.307 promotes cooperation with federal immigration officials, and prevents the state from adopting policies that block or limit interaction with ICE or related agencies.
Fox News Digital reached out to Republican Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe, but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Iran was charging $2 million per vessel to pass through the Hormuz Strait
Persian Gulf countries would bear the vast majority of costs under Iran’s proposed toll system for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The report said Iran is seeking to impose charges of up to $2 million per vessel, or about $1 per barrel of oil, in exchange for allowing passage through the strategic waterway.
Because most oil exports from the Gulf pass through the strait, countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would shoulder between 80% and 95% of the total cost burden, the WSJ said, citing estimates from analysts.
The proposal would have only a limited effect on global oil prices but could cost Persian Gulf exporters billions of dollars annually, while raising concerns over the principle of free maritime navigation, according to the report.

Obama Presidential Center Demands ID For Free Admission
Proof of Illinois residency is required to obtain free admission at the Obama Presidential Center ahead of its June 19 opening.
Visitors who show proof of residency can obtain free admission on Tuesdays, according to ABC7 Chicago. Admission is typically $30 for adults 12 and older and $23 for children ages three to eleven, while children ages two and under can visit the museum for free.
In addition, admission is $26 for adults who are Illinois residents, and $15 for children ages three to eleven who are Illinois residents, according to former President Barack Obama’s website. The website clearly states that Illinois residents “must be able to provide proof of residency. Be prepared to show proof of residency at the Museum with a valid photo ID, Illinois driver’s license, state ID, or city-issued ID.”
Tickets for Founding Members will be sold beginning April 21, according to ABC7 Chicago. The general public will be able to purchase tickets beginning May 6 and book a visit to the museum from June 19 through November 30.
The museum’s move to have visitors show proof of residency to obtain free admission has drawn backlash among conservatives over Democrats’ general opposition to voter ID laws.
“Bring three forms of ID, unless of course you are looking to vote while there,” one social media user wrote on X.
“What a joke. You require IDs for entry but don’t support requiring them to vote. Hypocrisy is alive and well. Who would want to see this monstrosity anyway?,” another social media user said.
The $850 million museum has generated backlash in the past.
The Obama Foundation sought to hire 75 to 100 unpaid volunteers known as “ambassadors” to help with museum operations, while its CEO and former top Obama aide Valerie Jarrett was paid $740,000 in 2024, according to Fox News Digital.
Although the museum is being privately funded, its surrounding infrastructure is estimated to cost approximately $350 million, with costs split between the city and the state, according to Fox News Digital.
The Museum “presents the remarkable story of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, America’s first Black president and First Lady. Dynamic exhibits across four floors explore the promise of democracy and the work of the Obama Presidency. Their challenges and accomplishments are rooted in the stories of the people, events, and policies that influenced them and continue to shape their legacy,” according to Obama’s website.

Swalwell loses all 21 of his endorsements from Dem colleagues
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) lost the last of the 21 endorsements he had from fellow Democratic members of Congress on Saturday as Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.) rescinded her support for his gubernatorial campaign.
Why it matters: It's a stunning reversal of political fortunes in just 24 hours. Swalwell was among the frontrunners in the race, but his campaign is in free fall due to allegations of rape, sexual assault and misconduct, which he denies.
-His page on the Democratic fundraising website ActBlue and the endorsement tab on his website have been pulled down, his ad buys are being pulled back, at least one fundraiser has been scrapped, and he is reportedly hemorrhaging staff.
-It doesn't end there: Swalwell is under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) plans to force a vote to expel him from Congress.
-Swalwell said in a video posted to social media Friday: "These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They are absolutely false. They did not happen, they never happened."
Driving the news: "The allegations of sexual assault against Eric Swalwell are deeply disturbing and disqualifying. I am retracting my endorsement of his candidacy for Governor," Grijalva wrote in a post on X.
-Reps. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) and Julia Brownley (D-Calif.) also rescinded their endorsements of Swalwell on Saturday.
-They joined Sens. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) and over a dozen other House Democrats who unendorsed Swalwell on Friday, with Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) resigning as a campaign chair.
-Several other endorsers, including multiple California state legislators and powerful labor unions, also retracted their support.
Between the lines: It's not just Swalwell's erstwhile endorsers calling for him to drop out of the race — party leaders are urging him to do so as well.
-House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Democratic caucus chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) said in a joint statement that he should "immediately end his campaign."
-California Democratic Party chair Rusty Hicks said in a statement: "My call for all — repeat, all — candidates for Governor to 'honestly assess the viability of their candidacy and campaign' still stands. In fact, that call is more important now than ever before."
