The Trump Administration Is Manipulating Inflation Data

The Trump administration is now actively gaming the inflation data.

For decades, the U.S. has understated the true state of inflation by applying various accounting gimmicks to the inflation data: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Producers Price Index (PPI).

The primary reasons for this are because A) it allows policymakers to hide the decline in living standards in the U.S. and B) the U.S. can continue to underpay Social Security COLA benefits based on lower inflation data.

Some of the more egregious gimmicks the U.S. applies to the inflation data are:

Substitution Effects The BLS assumes consumers substitute cheaper goods when prices rise — e.g., if beef prices spike, they switch to chicken.

Hedonics (Hedonic Quality Adjustments) If a new TV costs the same but has better resolution, BLS records that as a price decrease because you’re getting more quality per dollar. This depresses the measured price of electronics, appliances, and cars substantially.

Owners’ Equivalent Rent (OER) Rather than measuring actual home prices, the BLS asks homeowners what they think they could rent their house for.

Weighting of the Basket The basket weights are updated periodically but still don’t fully reflect how ordinary Americans spend money. Lower-income households spend far more of their income on food, energy, and housing — the most volatile and often highest-inflation categories. Upper-income consumption patterns (more services, discretionary goods) pull the average down.

Core CPI Strips Out Food and Energy The most-cited “core” measure explicitly excludes food and energy.

Yesterday the U.S. released its PPI data for the month of March. And it was a DOOZY.

First and foremost, the BLS claimed that energy prices only rose 8% in the month of March. In reality, oil prices were up 47% while gasoline prices were up 32% by the 13th of March (the date at which the BLS records price changes).

A gunman has opened fire at a secondary school in the city of Kahramanmaras in south-eastern Türkiye, a local governor has said. It is the second such incident in the country in as many days. An attack on an educational institution in Siverek on Tuesday left 17 wounded.

The second school shooting, which took place in the Onikisubat District of Kahramanmaras, resulted in four people being killed and 20 others being wounded, Governor Mukerrem Unluer said on Wednesday.

The fatalities include a teacher and three students, the governor said. At least four of those injured have been hospitalized in serious condition, he added.

Unluer said that the attacker was an eighth-grade student from the same school. He could have obtained the firearms from his father, who is a former police officer, he said.

According to the governor, the assailant, who had five pistols on him, entered two classrooms and opened fire there. He committed suicide after carrying out the shooting.

The chairman of the provincial branch of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Unal Ates, told Cumhuriyet newspaper that, according to his data, the attacker had mental issues and was known at the school as “a problematic child.”

Ates also claimed that the number of fatalities was higher than the official figures and that at least 35 people were wounded in the incident.

Videos from the scene captured students fleeing the school en mass during the attack, with some jumping out of second floor windows.

Russia publishes list of Ukraine-linked military production facilities around the world

European countries that produce weapons for Kiev risk a direct conflict with Moscow, the Defense Ministry has warned

According to the ministry, Kiev’s Western backers are seeking to ramp up production of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, a move Moscow described as a “deliberate step leading to a sharp escalation of the military-political situation throughout Europe.” It added that such efforts risk turning host countries into “Ukraine’s strategic rear area.”

“The implementation of terrorist attack scenarios against Russia… using supposedly ‘Ukrainian’ UAVs manufactured in Europe is leading to unpredictable consequences,” the ministry said, referring to repeated statements by Ukrainian officials about expanding long-range strikes.

Instead of strengthening the security of European states, the actions of European rulers are rapidly drawing these countries into a war with Russia.

The ministry named multiple drone manufacturing facilities located in the UK, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Finland, and Poland.

At least four sites producing drone components were identified in Italy, with several plants involved in such activities located in Türkiye, Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Israel.

Ukraine has been regularly launching one-way drones deep into Russian territory, targeting assorted civilian infrastructure, industrial sites, and residential buildings. The attacks have seemingly intensified in recent weeks, with Kiev sending in hundreds of fixed-wing UAVs daily.

Russian officials have described the strikes as indiscriminate “terrorist” attacks aimed at compensating for frontline setbacks the Ukrainian military has been suffering. Moscow has retaliated with a long-range strike campaign of its own against dual-use infrastructure and military installations, maintaining it never targets purely civilian sites.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law introducing criminal liability for antisemitic acts, amending Article 161 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code to explicitly include antisemitism as a punishable offense.

Penalties under the new law for inciting hatred, humiliation of honor and dignity, or incitement of manifestations of antisemitism range from heavy fines to restrictions on liberty to prison sentences of up to eight years in the most severe cases, such as those involving violence or organized groups. Other aggravating circumstances include antisemitic actions by public officials and antisemitic actions involving threats or deception. The legislation was signed on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

President Donald Trump signaled a willingness Wednesday to extend a hotly debated surveillance tool while also commenting that he would willingly surrender his rights and privileges to do so.

The president posted on Truth Social that he was working with Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, along with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rick Crawford, on extending Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The post comes as Republicans’ infighting grows over the provision between Johnson and several members of the Rules committee.

“I am asking Republicans to UNIFY, and vote together on the test vote to bring a clean Bill to the floor. We need to stick together when this Bill comes before the House Rules Committee today to keep it CLEAN,” Trump wrote.

Trump also pointed to former FBI Director James Comey, saying that he used FISA Title I as part of his investigation into Russian Collusion in the president’s 2016 campaign. He then added that he would be willing to surrender part of his own rights for the section.

“I am willing to risk the giving up of my Rights and Privileges as a Citizen for our Great Military and Country! Our Military Patriots desperately need FISA 702, and it is one of the reasons we have had such tremendous SUCCESS on the battlefield,” Trump wrote.

The President had previously called for Congress to “KILL FISA” in 2024 stating that it was “ILLEGALLY USED” against his campaign to spy on them.

Bipartisan senators are warning that a privacy threat tied to artificial intelligence (AI) could result in mass surveillance of American citizens if the renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) does not include sufficient guardrails.

Efforts to renew the federal surveillance law ahead of its expiration have been complicated as House GOP leaders scramble to secure enough support to pass a clean 18-month extension aligned with President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson’s requests, according to a Politico report. Both are pushing to reauthorize the law without changes before Monday’s deadline.

The growing power of AI is driving new worries among both Republicans and Democrats about government agencies’ warrantless purchases of Americans’ sensitive data.

Commercially available information obtained from data brokers for criminal investigations, military operations and national security circumvents constitutional restrictions on information agencies can gather from Americans, Politico reported.

Although agencies’ surveillance capabilities were once constrained by the labor and expertise needed to analyze vast amounts of data, AI is enabling officials to easily sift through millions of data points, Politico reported. That shift has prompted a bipartisan group of lawmakers to push for warrant requirements before agencies can purchase such data.

“Artificial intelligence has transformed American industries for the better while enabling an unprecedented capability to glean information from private data, increasing the risk of unconstitutional government overreach,” Republican Wyoming Sen. Cynthia Lummis, who co-sponsored the renewal of the Government Surveillance Reform Act, said in a statement to Politico.

The bill, introduced by Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee, would require federal agencies to get a warrant when buying Americans’ data and when accessing Americans’ private communications under Section 702 of FISA.

Lee argued in a statement to the Daily Caller that Congress should not approve surveillance powers that allow warrantless searches or bulk data purchases, asserting that FISA must be reformed to better protect Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights.

“We should not rubber stamp deep-state spying on Americans, whether through warrantless searches of their communications, or allowing the government to purchase their data en masse from corporations. The 4th Amendment is clear: ‘The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.’ We must reform FISA,” Lee stated.

Lummis and other lawmakers are urging Congress to add stronger privacy protections before renewing Section 702 — a program originally intended to monitor non-U.S. citizens, but it has been used to examine Americans’ data without warrants.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is prepared for the possibility that fighting with Iran could resume, as it continues operations against Hezbollah alongside newly launched talks with Lebanon.

“Our American allies are keeping us constantly updated on their contacts with Iran,” Netanyahu says in a video message, released amid continued American efforts to reach a deal with Tehran and reported US pressure for Israel to agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

“Our objectives with the United States are aligned,” Netanyahu continues. “We want to see Iran’s enriched material removed, and we want to see the elimination of its enrichment capability inside Iran. And of course, we want to see the reopening of [key shipping] straits,” he says.

“It is too early to say how this will end, or even how it will progress. In light of the possibility that the war may resume, we are prepared for any scenario,” the premier says.

“In parallel” to fighting Hezbollah, “we are conducting negotiations with Lebanon, talks that…are happening now because we are very strong, and countries are approaching us – not just Lebanon,” Netanyahu says.

“In these negotiations, there are two main goals: first, to push Hezbollah away; and second, to achieve a sustainable peace – a peace through strength,” he adds.

The Czech Republic has “always, always” been an advocate for Israel in the European Union and will remain so, Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka told The Times of Israel this week.

Macinka spoke from his hotel in Jerusalem on Tuesday, visiting days after the electoral defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, widely seen as Israel’s most reliable ally in Europe.

Though Hungary is expected to remain a solid friend of Israel, the change of leadership has brought a new focus to the Czech role in pushing back on EU countries more hostile to Israel.

Even countries that have been close to Israel have moved away from it since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack and war in Gaza. On Tuesday, Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Rome would not be renewing its defense agreement with Israel.

In September, the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, presented a proposal for sanctions on far-right Israeli ministers and a partial suspension of Israel’s association agreement with the EU over alleged humanitarian violations in Gaza. The sanctions were not immediately approved, and the effort, which requires unanimous support from the bloc’s member countries, remains frozen.

Former NYC Mayor Eric Adams Becomes Albanian Citizen

Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams has become a citizen of Albania by a special presidential decree, adding an unexpected milestone to his post-political life.

Albanian President Bajram Begaj signed the decree at Adams’ own request. Albanian media reported the development first. Spokesman Todd Shapiro confirmed that Eric Adams received Albanian citizenship voluntarily, describing him as a longstanding friend of the Albanian-American community.

Shapiro also said the honor reflects a relationship built on mutual respect and that it deepens the ties between New York City and Albania.

The roots of that relationship go back to Adams’ time in office. He organized three flag-raising ceremonies for Albania at City Hall and hosted a celebration of Albanian culture at Gracie Mansion.

Searching through millions of meteor observations, scientists spotted a cluster of 282 shooting stars that seemed to emerge from the same point in space.

According to the researchers, these pieces of rocky debris are the aftermath of a crumbling asteroid, or rock–comet, that got a little too close to the sun.

Now, as our planet sweeps through the rock–comet's cluttered wake, keen stargazers on Earth will be able to spot a brand–new meteor shower lighting up the sky.

Meteor showers occur when Earth moves through a cloud of dust and small rocks littering space, which fall into the atmosphere and burn up with a dazzling flash.

Earth's latest meteor shower, dubbed M2026–A1, will be visible each year from March 16 to April 7.

While it won't be as spectacular as better–known meteor showers, this stunning display gives scientists a unique insight into the doomed rock–comet that created it.

Firefighters tackle huge blaze at Geelong oil refinery 'not yet under control'

A "significant" fire has broken out at one of Australia's two currently operational oil refineries, with residents in parts of Geelong told to stay indoors due to smoke.

A watch and act has since been issued for a number of suburbs in Geelong, with residents being warned to close windows to keep out hazardous smoke.

In a statement, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said they were called to the Viva Energy Refinery at 11:05pm following multiple reports of "explosions and flames".

"Firefighters arrived on scene to find a significant fire impacting the refinery," the spokesperson said."All refinery staff have been accounted for. This incident is not yet under control."

The Country Fire Authority issued a watch and act for a large swathe of Geelong, warning "anyone located in to the south of Refinery Road Corio" to take shelter indoors immediately.

As of 2:15am, the Watch and Act was in place for Armstrong Creek, Bell Park, Belmont, Breakwater, Charlemont, Chilwell, Connewarre, Corio, Drumcondra, East Geelong, Geelong, Geelong West, Grovedale, Hamlyn Heights, Leopold, Manifold Heights, Marshall, Moolap, Mount Duneed, Newcomb, Newtown, Norlane, North Geelong, North Shore, Rippleside, South Geelong, St Albans Park, Thomson, Whittington.

"There is a factory fire in Refinery Road, Corio," the advice said.

"A wind change has caused the smoke to be blown towards the greater Geelong area."

Residents were also being urged to keep off the roads to allow emergency services to respond.

Viva Energy was contacted for comment.

The company's website states that its Geelong refinery can process up to 120,000 barrels of oil a day, including "manufacturing petrol, diesel, LPG, jet fuel, avgas and Low Aromatic Fuel".

The website goes on to acknowledge that the Geelong plant is "a major hazard facility" but that the company was committed to "operating it safely and responsibly".

It is one of two facilities, the other being in Brisbane, that can refine fuel domestically.

Those two plants have been in focus in recent weeks since the Iran war caused a global energy crisis that has put pressure on shipments of oil across the globe.

Earlier, Victoria Police told the ABC emergency services were called to reports of a large fire at the Corio refinery and that people in the area have been asked to stay indoors and close their windows due to the large amount of smoke in the area.
