I kinda get Elons idea that the speed of productivity will create a surplus and if they can not sell it cheaply companies will be sitting on stock. The idea you address is brought up in Star Trek. The idea of replicators for instance all food is created hunger and need is diminished. SO the idea becomes that if pepole want to earn more than the base replicator rations etc they do something of service like join star flee, to pursue your dreams and what you want to learn rather than what society says you have to do to barely scrape by.
