Wycombe MP Steve Baker Resigns

This week Wycombe MP Steve Baker writes exclusively to Bucks Free Press readers:

Parliament went into recess last week, and I am now catching-up on correspondence and meeting many different people at various constituency engagements.

Those people who follow the news will know I recently took the difficult decision to resign from the Department for Exiting the EU following the Cabinet’s policy agreement on this country’s future relationship with the EU.

I resigned as a matter of principle. Ministers who cannot accept collective responsibility for policy must leave the Government.

Over the last few weeks I have received many messages from constituents and others, both Leavers and Remainers. I know Brexit is, rightly, a matter of serious concern to the people of this country.

Back in March, President Tusk, on behalf of the European Council proposed a security partnership, participation in institutions related to research and innovation, culture and education, dealing with potential absurdities like any threat to flights and a free trade agreement covering all sectors with zero tariffs and including services.

If the political and administrative will could be found to solve the issues at the Irish border, that settlement would make us a normal independent country.

The Chequers policy marked a departure from the policy being developed by the ministerial team at DExEU. The Cabinet papers were prepared by the Cabinet Office’s Europe Unit and cut firmly across the policy of the Department in a number of ways.

I believe the establishment in the UK is not persuaded of the merits of our leaving the EU, so it has sought to remain as close to the EU as feasible, knowing that to be virtually impossible to reconcile with the implications of a Leave vote or the EU’s legal order.

I have advised against a challenge to the Prime Minister and have urged fellow MPs to make constructive policy proposals. I am confident the Government will not fall.

I will continue to speak-up for the interests of Wycombe constituents from the backbenches.
